NW Window Pro, I should apologize to you. I tend to put all "local companies" in the catagory of fly by nights. Sorry. There are some very dependable people out there that go on their own to avoid the politics of big corporation. I fully understand their motivation. It just seems the depen...

Windowrep,
Thanks for the info. I knew Champion was a manufacturer. But I thought champion also sold and installed what they manufacture. I wasn't referring to Champion as a "local company".

The first price sounded to good to be true, and it was. Just beware of the local companies warranty and service after the sale. I've heard way too many horror stories about the "local co.". Your decision should be based on more than just quality of the window, if your keeping your house fo...

I have to agree with hipkat, in that I have removed several older vinyl clad windows that have split at the seams, especially in MN. Expansion variances between the two materials might be the reason. Once you have a single point for moisture to enter, it's all over. Water inside freezes and thaws, w...

WOW! I missed alot while I was at WORK! First of all, I think maybe Hipkat works for shuco. While he thinks he works for Schuco (I can't find the little squiggly thing for over the u, sorry). Or maybe, he just shouldn't try to educate me in the spelling department. Secondly, I once did direct a litt...

If I were going to tear apart a window, I would do some research. I merely think the prices I've seen on here for shuco windows are high and I still can't see the justification. Your saying that if I removed my Sears windows, installed shuco's, I would save 50% on my energy bill? Probably not!

Window4u, I apologize for the generalization. I was basing my thoughts on some strands from this forum. In particular, the one that had shucco at nearly double the money of several other companies. I do understand about independent contractors and their ability to jack prices. Sears pricing comes fr...

Compare what features? They both have glass and locks. Both keep out the cold and the heat. They both probably look better than those being removed. Air locks, handles? Sears has an interloking meeting rail that seems to be very efficient, Shucco? vinyl construction? I'm not saying shucco is a bad w...

I can't say anything bad about shucco, except that they're overpriced, from what I hear. So maybe Hipcat can enlighten me to the justifiable reason for the outrageous price they charge for their windows. How many years of energy savings would it take to make up the difference? I mean, how much energ...

Your right about the reason for wrapping the trim. No wood should be exposed. I normally seal the aluminum to the outer edge of the wood trim, behind the aluminum. Some surfaces are virtually impossible to lay a nice attractive bead of caulking on, not to mention the color variations. I always leave...

Sears offered the sun clean glass with their best window, at no extra charge. That lasted about a month or so. We had a real problem with caulking on the glass from the factory. Windex won't take it off. But you can't use a razorblade on the sun clean. We discontinued it after hundreds of complaints...

You should take a look at what Sears has to offer. Good quality windows and a reputation of standing behind what they sell. Not the lowest price, but who would brag about that. The quote you received is way high. E-mail me if your interested in seeing what Sears has to offer. Good luck!

Your best bet would be to check with a reputable paint shop. I've been told there is a primer made specifically for vinyl. I've never used it. I've also been told that the prep work is the key. Smooth vinyl won't hold paint as well as textured or rough, makes sense to me. Then there is the expansion...

hope your sitting down when the shucco dude lays it on ya'. i haven't even seen a shucco window, but they are expensive. Some say unreasonably high. A good quality window that size should run between $600-$800. Anything less than that, beware of the quality and the installation. Anything more than t...
