Re: Water in wells of new replacement windows
LoneStar all I can do is agree with my brothers here. I have also seen them installed in every other way other than what their suppose to be. I’ve also pulled my hair out trying to see why they are pooling under the active sash. My favorite repair tool is a wire coat hanger and a gallon water bottle...

Re: egress and normal casements
Todd I know Pella gets that money for every one of their Designer Series units. Marvin whacked me for more! I didnt eat that fee because it wasn't my mistake or problem until it didn't pass inspection. They changed out easily and worked awesome. The casement will work simply when it's installed plum...

Re: engress and normal casements
It's not even close to being worth it. Adding all that specialty hardware for a unit that's not required to have it. Hell no! Take that extra money and upgrade your IGU's. That would be worth the investment!

Re: engress and normal casements
Egress Windows are windows which meet a specific glass opening size for access by Firefighters and Emergency Services. The clear opening space must meet code. I think it's 5.1 sq ft at ground level. Since the standard casement windows normal pivot hardware doesn't clear the sash out of the clear ope...

Re: St. Paul window replacement
I guess I missed this one earlier. I did a lot of research back in the day when I chose Richlin as my in house line of Windows. Hayfield really engineered a great quality window when they developed the Richlin line. The engineering department brought on highly skilled installers and service professi...

Re: Expert opinions appreciated
Mike you're making me blush. Thank you for your kind words my friend. SMD, you can do a full-Frame replacement with or without a nailing fin. I know Pella has gotten their vinyl non-finned full-frame application approved from the Gods above. If its done that way it with stands our temps here in MN. ...

Re: Need advice on windows estimate.
Just have to love MN! The standards we use to install windows here in Minnesota are much more extensive than the other climates. That's why I try and stay neutral on other installers application methods used in warmer climates. There are still some good installers here in MN. The most important thin...

Re: Expert opinions appreciated
SMD, Your rot problem is in the window unit itself. I'll say that you have a 98% chance your rough opening is clean without much damage. Do a full frame replacement and make them remove the siding for a proper replacement with nail fin. Don't let them cut it out of the opening and slide the new unit...

Well, Well boys! I just spent the last half hour laughing my ass off at this thread. Homesealed I love the way you work the room! Very stern and hardcore. I totally agree with you though. Both systems have there places in the industry. Nothing worse than cleaning debris out of a constant force sprin...

I just notch the frame above to allow the new balance to slide down. Most people have no clue what the notch is for. I've had numerous reps show me that trick. I've broken and ate more Windows trying the heat gun thing. I have no patience says my Son and Wife!!

Re: Install sill adapter before window install or after?
Always after! You can shim it up with shims to get it in place. We do the entire install saving the sill expander so for last. We do it while cleaning up. We foam under the sill during the install to make sure it's sealed tightly. Then we cut the expander to the proper height and pound it in place. ...

Re: Foam spray insulation
WOW nailed it! If you've never used canned foam before....don't start on your house. The store bought can does not offer much control. You have to learn how to spray and let it expand. The theory is to not have the foam expand out from the gap and onto the window, casing, floor, and window coverings...

Re: Caulk Bubbling on new vinyl window install (pics)...
In my experience there's only one thing I've seen in common with anything bubbling or peeling. MOISTURE!! When paint peels or caulk starts doing that crazy thing it does.....its moisture behind the product. Sometimes water penetrates after the new window is installed. I've had this happen to a coupl...
