Re: Newly installed window leaking and installer will not take resp.

We've had the same thing happen to us 4-5 years ago. Brand new windows. Luckily, the installer was nice enough to fix it at his own cost. It wasn't even a discussion so I'm not sure if that's standard practice. Standard practice in most cases where the issue is likely due to an installation defect,...

Re: Newly installed window leaking and installer will not take resp.

Good info above. I'd only add that many window installations, including yours as it would appear, are dependent in at least some degree on the existing wall cladding and water management system. There may or may not be something that could be done in terms of flashing, however it would not be standa...

Re: Trying to choose a patio door.

I do not believe that the Thermal door is worth $400 more, no. Frankly, I'd personally prefer the Polaris even at a slight premium, although I will say that the Thermal door is not bad at all and would likely serve you well. I'd suggest digging a little more into each company offering these products...

Re: Trying to choose a patio door.

Polaris would be my choice out of your final two... Don't lose any sleep over the Ultrex unit btw. It's solidly built, but I never fail to get complaints on air leakage when we've used them by request.

Re: Soft-lite barrington or Polaris Ultraweld

Both are solid choices, although the Barrignton is a bit lower on the Softlite totem pole. With upgraded spacer, I'd probably pick the UW. If the SL dealer has access to the LS or Elements, my recommendation would change. Lastly, take the installation and dealer into heavy consideration as well. If ...

Solid choice, it will serve you well. Great to hear that you found a company that you like as well, that is very much as important as the actual product.

Re: selecting two double hung vinyl windows

+1. Under $600 ea installed for a mid-grade window, small job. That's actually priced pretty low by most definitions.

Re: Replacement Windows and Installation: Question & Opinion

The nail fin does not make the window stick out per se, however it does limit where the window can be set depth-wise. Sometimes extra material can be added or removed to facilitate a specific landing spot on the depth while still utilizing the nail fin. This could have relevance to your blinds situa...

Re: Window Quote for Minnesota

+1. The Elements is the easy winner here even if the glass is double pane, but triple pane seals that. Standard Sunrise would be worthy of heavy consideration at a slight discount if we were talking casements (I actually PREFER the Sunrise casement over SL), but for DH's and SL's the Elements is the...

Re: Where to start????

What other lines did the Okna dealer sell? I would explore that further. My thoughts exactly. Which line does that dealer carry? Okna offers several excellent lines. While the 500 is a great window, its actually in their lower half of offerings. You have other great options as well to be sure, it j...

Re: Manufacturer warranty for private-label windows

No issue with private label warranty. My bigger concerns here would be the overall "uneasiness" that you mentioned in the other thread. Fine window, but trust your gut if you just don't love these guys. If you have yet to find a company that makes you feel at ease, as painful as it may be, you may w...

Re: Quote feedback requested: Sunrise, Kensington HPP, Alside

If you don't have a great feeling about the guy I'd probably trust that instinct rather than kick yourself if things go south. You will run into various levels of negotiating in this industry, but cutting the price nearly in half is a bit much IMO. As far as the window selection, while the LS would ...

Re: Quote feedback requested: Sunrise, Kensington HPP, Alside

Its easy to get information overload, but I promise, you will be much better off having educated yourself about this investment. I'd wait for the Softlite quote to come in, that may offer some additional perspective on pricing. A couple additional thoughts, I'd be careful about putting much weight o...
