Re: North Texas Window Question

According to the owner (Chuck Langham) in the comments section under the video, in response to concern about not using shims: "I appreciate your comments and concerns for how the window was installed. How do we know the window is level and plumb? Since these are custom made windows there is no room ...

Re: North Texas Window Question

Flo, because TDI has become so difficult to deal with, many window contractors have pulled out of serving the coastal area, including me. Unfortunately, that doesn’t leave homeowners with a lot of good options for window replacement. Norandex has two manufacturers who private label for them - Simont...

Re: North Texas Window Question

I agree with foaming behind the brick, however I disagree with other aspects. 1) They should have used shims to ensure the window is level and square. They never put a level on the window, which is puzzling. 2) He said they put six screws in the sliding window, two at the upper corners, two at the l...

Re: North Texas Window Question

The Traditions is a private label window that is offered to select dealers in protected territories. While it has couple of extra bells and whistles, it’s no better than the Presidential or the Energy Master. I wouldn’t pay more for the Traditions. Todd is right for most of the country, but unfortun...

Re: Milgard Style-line thoughts?

I’m not a fan of the auto lock on any window as they tend to become problematic over time, in my experience.

The Styleline is a pocket sill, and that’s always a bad design. Stick with a sloped sill and you’ll be much happier in the years to come.

Since you are looking for long-term durability and performance, the Okna is far superior in construction and therefore the best choice.

Re: Where to start????

You should be able to find Soft-lite and Sunrise there. You might also luck out and get an Okna dealer in your area. That would be a good start. Get at least two quotes from contractors offering better quality products to give you a good baseline of what’s reasonable.

I’m with HomeSealed. Trust your instincts and find another contractor. He comes across as a bit “slippery”.

Re: Future of Starmark and stuck in window limbo

My understanding is that Okna is completely out of the old composite lineal for casements, and therefore can no longer match the older casements. They do still have some material in stock to match the old double hungs and sliders, but it will be exhausted in the next couple of months as well.

Re: Quote advice-Berkshire Elite, Provia, Soft-lite

Revere Berkshire is made by Alside and it isn’t any better than Mezzo. The only reason the AL rating gets that low is by using stick on pads at the corners, and the reinforcement is a joke. In a windy state like Kansas, choosing a window that’s as air-tight as possible is important. I seriously doub...

Re: Am I Going Insane?

HomeSealed is right, you have many more than the 18 windows originally stated. The pricing isn’t outrageous based on the number of windows actually being replaced. You might find a lower price, but the pricing you’ve received isn’t outrageously high as they originally seemed.

Re: Am I Going Insane?

Every market has those companies who use hard closes, price drops, etc... to sell windows at a premium price. Unfortunately, you ran into two of them. There will most certainly be a few companies in your area who offer a premium window at a fair and reasonable price, so keep looking and be patient. ...

Re: Provia vs Sunrise

It was my understanding (from my rep) that the Verde had reinforcement like the Vanguard. If it does not (and the website doesn’t list it) I retract my recommendation of it. That’s very unfortunate as an unreinforced Sunrise double hung is susceptible to sagging. It’s also preferable to have the loc...
