Re: Replacement Windows and Installation: Question & Opinion

Yup, the dimension of the frame the projects outward off the exterior face of the nailing flange is irrelevant. There is no "standard" for a vinyl extrusion with a flange in regard to the termination of the interior frame depth. Rarely is a high quality window's depth the same as builder's grade vin...

Re: Replacement Windows and Installation: Question & Opinion

I wouldn't cut vinyl siding. It's so easy to remove and reinstall. All of the time we pull out vinyl new construction and put the same exact sized flanged vinyl back in. It only requires a small 3/16" to 5/16" sheetrock cut back. We lift the stools out and reinstall them after ripping in table saw. ...

Re: Quote feedback requested: Sunrise, Kensington HPP, Alside

The Huntington is a decent window. With Heatmirror it's a super energy efficient window, however it's frame profile is a very basic and is kind of a strange looking fellow. Even though the base extrusion is from the same extruder as what Soft-Lite utilizes, I feel it's less attractive from the exter...

Re: Install methods.

The make size of the window will need to be smaller than the rough opening. You are going to need squaring room to account for framing not being 100% level, plumb, and square, plus shims and insulation. I like in new construction a 1/2" gap in new construction around the window to the rough opening....

Re: Simonton vs. Sunrise

Contacting masterext would be a really good idea. He has access to the OKNA lines as well as a local product to Northern NJ that is has been a real nice locally made line that is really gaining ground for a high quality best value vinyl offering. His crews are very experienced as well.

Re: Whole house or partial house replacement.

Well said Randy. I always cut back the rock and stool/sill. More work, however it looks so much better and the slips that I'm seeing in my part of the country allow too much of the jamb pocket to decrease which makes the blinds if they were in the head or upper jamb pocket to now be installed outsid...

Re: Are aluminum reinforced windows necessary?

I would highly recommend a modern upper mid to premium grade vinyl platform over a dated product line in my opinion in regard to sash meeting rail reinforcement. More and more of the windows that I tear out are now vinyl windows. I personally break every window down like some sort of crazy Roswell a...

Re: Patio Door Slider - Provia or Okna

Thank you for posting back a review on the ProVia slider. That's one nice door for sure. I've not had a chance to sell and install one yet. Regarding the youtube type of stuff, perhaps it's time I take my new GoPro Hero 5 out of the box and figure that darn thing out and post up some install videos ...

I agree with you Thomas. The home improvement window industry has a lot sales tactics that I frankly don' t approve of.

Re: Home Depot estimate too high? (and other questions)

Tell the SL rep that you would like to see a 36" wide double hung sample in person so that you can run a metal straight edge atop the bottom sash in front of the locks so that you can see how many .005" shims will fit underneath of the straight edge in the middle of the smiling sash. Game over.........

Re: Spare parts for White Corona 4000 series Schuco windows

Hi Raymond. You came to the right place where us window nerds all hang out. Those Schuco Corona 4000 double hung pivot bars mechanically attach to the bottom of the sashes via (3) self tapping small phillips screws. One has to just tilt the sash, rack it to release one side first then sort of work t...

Re: Home Depot estimate too high? (and other questions)

Some solid advise from well respected industry pros to digest. I would never allow Home Depot or Lowes to touch anything on my house. OKNA lines or Soft-Lite Imperial LS will be by leaps and bounds superior to anything else that you have looked at so far.

Re: Replacing 23 Windows in SW Ohio

It would be a lot more money as the labor end is much more intensive. However, it's the only way I will do that installation myself. I've seen too many of the local high volume window discounters and box stores do the express method with vinyl flanged tear outs that have really changed the look of t...

Re: Replacing 23 Windows in SW Ohio

You didn't mention anything about the install? Is the house sided with vinyl? At that pricing I would find it hard to believe that they're going to install a flanged new construction window so it sounds like that they will be downsizing your new windows and installing them as an express installation...
