Re: Window Installation - Atlanta Area

I don't want to be pegged as the resident WW supporter. All I said earlier was it probably isn't fair to assume they're all jerks. I have no intention of defending WW... and even less desire to be anywhere near Clear Choice! I'm a little surprised it too them so long to go bankrupt. I do think it's ...

Re: Window Installer Claims - True or not? (Seattle Area)

Thanks Washington, I promise I'm not all bad  As for the second question about the nail flanges, the contractor is right. Those flanges are there for a reason and the reason is for new construction installation . Replacement windows do not come with nail flanges because they aren't necessary. ...

Re: Window Installer Claims - True or not? (Seattle Area)

Well that certainly is an influx of questions :D Some of them can't be answers without more specific info, but I'll try to offer a little insight. Install is very important. You do still need a good window, but even a great window will still not work well if improperly installed. As for claim 1 - th...

Re: Window Tax Credit Question

My understanding is that storm doors can count if they are installed as a "door unit" with an entry door because then that unit is energy star qualified. A storm door on it's own does not qualify for energy star (as far as I'm aware) so a storm door on it's own does not get you any tax cre...

Re: Window Tax Credit Question

EcoStar you're wrong about that. It was 30% last year and it's 10% this year. See details here http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=t ... s.tx_index

I hope you haven't been telling your customers that it's 30%

Re: Alside Ultra Maxx price/value question

Yep, they're trying to trick you into thinking you're getting a "great deal!". I'd suggest trying to find a company that will treat you like an adult and skip the manipulation.

Re: Window Tax Credit Question

That sounds exactly what's going on. I don't want to question someone's character without knowing the full situation, but at first glance it sounds like your "window guy" is trying to manipulate you into spending more money. The previous description of the tax credit is exactly right.

Re: Simonton 9800 quote

One word of caution. The 9800 window has a rather thick frame and the 366 glass has a rather dark tint. I'd recommend checking the visible transmittance rating on that combo and make sure you'll be happy with the fact that there will be less light in your house after those are installed. I find cust...

I think it's just a re-branded 5300. I'm pretty confident in that, but I could be wrong on this one. Someone might chime in who is more familiar with Gorell than I am.

Re: Kyrpton gas

If you look at it from a payback period standpoint krypton typically doesn't make sense. Although the math is probably a little different if you live somewhere really frigid. As was mentioned the price is typically pretty high. The big improvement comes from going from your old windows to new window...

Re: earthwise line

My understanding of these is that they are built by different small manufacturers in different areas. Some of the small of these manufacturers will also make other brands. I would tend to agree that the windows are probably not too bad, but that structure seems shaky to me. What happens if one goes ...

Re: Window World???

We heard from someone who knows someone who works at Window World (admitted gossip, but can't we have a little fun!) that the Window World headquarters was in talks with another manufacturer. I don't think it would be Soft Lite, because they're probably too small to produce that many windows. I don'...

Re: constant force vs block and tackle

I hope everyone enjoyed the great weather yesterday! HomeSealed, I was referring to this thread. If you look back all the way to page 1 you'll see on February 8th 2008 (this is clearly a long lasting thread!) Tru_Blue said that block and tackle balances lasted "several times longer" than c...
