Re: Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

However, it is my understanding that the coefficient of thermal expansion for fiberglass is low and is similar to that of glass, which would mean the frame and glass move (expand) together and thus the seals would not fail as often as that of wood, vinyl, wood-vinyl composite, aluminum, etc. I thin...

Re: Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

On the window, if you like fiberglass (Infinity/Integrity), the Marvin products are the best choices available IMO. There are some vinyl products that have substantially better performance, however the main reason that people choose fiberglass is for looks, so I'd assume that is the case here. Eith...

Re: Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

Changing gears a bit, this window is an Infinity by Marvin, which has the fiberglass outside and inside. I have heard Marvin makes a good window. Has anyone had any problems with these Infinity windows? I want to thank all of you that have taken your time to discuss my questions. I appreciate it gre...

Re: Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

The reason I brought up the roof or collar is that they can't very well hang a bow properly if they are going to install a roof over it. If you tie the cables at an angle to the wall you end up pulling the top of the window inward past the drywall ...unless you screw a board to the top of the windo...

Re: Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

No problem with the gable end install. The projection past the edge of the slate may render knee braces unnessecary. it will depend on how far past the unit over hangs and how much the seat board can be supported by the masonary. You do not have total wall depth including the masonary nor do you ha...

Re: Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

Wayne is referring to having the knee braces set a tiny bit higher so that as they settle out under the weight of the bow that they finish level. Have the floor of the bow set about 1/8th bubble up on the level. Oh, ok, I understand now. Thanks So, apparently, no one has a concern with the cathedra...

Re: Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

2x4 wall or 2x6? Most cases will not require any special precautions beyond the turnbuckles and knee braces, however, that is a bit window. I am not entirely comfortable with that arrangement and no knee bracing. Thank you Windows on Washington. The wall is 2x4. From the replys I'm getting it looks...

Re: Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

If I fab the knee braces I use 2 x4's to construct L , then double 2 x 4 diagonal, Then cap the whole thing solid. When secured properly this will hold an elephant. Pella/Gunton used to supply a nice 2 x 4 and scrolled small or med knee brace. The large knee brace was not scrolled. Thanks Anthony f...

Re: Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

Does the one contractor not want to tie the knee braces into the stone for some reason? Or, is it just not his normal practice with a cable support system? On a bow that size if you don't mind the appearance of the knee braces, I think it's a good idea if the braces are done tastefully. Many guys d...

Re: Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

Most manufacturers require one or the other for warranty purposes. What is the wall thickness, depth of the seatboard, and projection of the unit beyond the outside wall? All of those factors should be considered in determining how much support would be needed. I would use knee bracing and allow fo...

Re: Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

1 no 2 ussually 3 I would The knee braces if installed correctly will giv ethe most support. The unit should be set a touch high 1/8", to adjust to just a pinch of settling. Thank you Anthony for your reply. Are you saying that when the braces are installed they should be 1/8" lower than ...

Supporting a large bow window in wall with cathedral ceiling

I have a question about the strength of a wall which a large bow window is supposed to go into and about how to support the bow window. The original double pane window is flat, with one square picture and two casements. Here is the senario: 1. Bow window; fiberglass, 126" long x 66' high, 5-sec...
