Re: Tyvek behind vinyl siding and j channel calk
OK, I have until tomorrow to back out.. maybe I can stall them a bit. My house is a split foyer with a breezeway and a garage with an apartment (gambrel roof). There is TONS of wrap and soffit work. You feel confident I can go with a local medium size company for less? WOW! You sure you and your fam...

Re: Tyvek behind vinyl siding and j channel calk
OK pros, here is what I'm looking at.. The attached postnew picture shows post window install by HD. They could not get the wrap under the flashing on top due to the way it was nailed down / existing siding so the calked it. They got the aluminum wrap over the old trim as close as they could on the ...

Re: Tyvek behind vinyl siding and j channel calk
Hank, just out of curiosity, why are you dealing with all of this? if you are hiring someone to do your installation, this should all be covered by them. I will say that I'd be overly cautious with HD crews as well, (especially given your experience during the window installation) as well as the co...

Re: Tyvek behind vinyl siding and j channel calk
OK, so based on all of this I'll strip the old Tyvek, install new drip edge over windows and new Tyvek. A few more questions. -The Tyvek should lap over the window drip edge and I should tape top and sides with Tyvek tape, right? I've seen people use stuff that looks like grace ice and water shield ...

Re: Tyvek behind vinyl siding and j channel calk
Thanks and Yes, fan fold is what they are installing. I asked if they were going to tape the seams and he said no because the house needs to breath (which is also why he said strip it to the wood). This picture is a good example of why I'm so concerned. A 2nd floor window had been leaking for years ...

Tyvek behind vinyl siding and j channel calk
I have a 43 year old home and I'm having HD install new vinyl siding (they did a pretty good job on my windows). My task is to remove the old cedar siding but one thing my sales person told me has me concerned. He said I can remove everything down to the wood including the old Tyvek because the 3/8&...

My next project
I just had Home Depot replace 18 windows in my 43 year old house and now I'm thinking I have to replace some casement windows which were installed about 23 years ago. I replaced the older windows 1st but these are in pretty bad shape too. My wife also HATES casement windows and I love the new slider...

Re: My HD Simonton Journey
OK, so here goes my 'end of project' post. I hope all this helps future home owners decide who / what to go with. Some great advice here and yes, you pros posting here do nice work! My ' ass umption' was that for work like Dave posted I would pay caviar price; however, I had a tuna fish budget :wink...

Re: My HD Simonton Journey
Thanks guys. They are still here and the 1st picture was a 2nd floor window installed yesterday. There was some calk on that window but the top corner was not done. There was no drip edge along the top of the old windows. Here is a picture of another one they just did on 1st floor, you will see this...

Re: My HD Simonton Journey
OK, here we are on install day number two just a little over 2 weeks after the project coordinator came for the final measurements. The guys have done a nice job and I was pleasantly surprised to see my exterior trim was also being wrapped. My one concern which I plan to raise is that the exterior w...

Re: My HD Simonton Journey
Happy Friday all. OK, so I understand many think you are better served going with a local outfit which I'm not going to disagree with. I'm taking a chance for sure BUT we shall see :-) So JM met with my wife and went over every step of what would happen, he took measurements of every window, drew up...

My HD Simonton Journey
I decided after doing countless hours of research that I would post a chronological account of my experience with Home Depot replacing my windows. Hopefully this will help others considering this approach. I'm not looking to promote HD or push anyone in any particular direction but in all my researc...
