Re: Ridge vent, gable vent

Thanks WOW. I googled light box and saw some that go over existing siding. Actually look nice as they are molded to accept boxes and screws. The ones that my guy used are different. http://i824.photobucket.com/albums/zz166/Ken5string/boxreduced.jpg Plastic on face is 1/8 inch thick, so I assume it i...

Re: Ridge vent, gable vent

Yes... I am definately going to have a talk with him. Last night I went to reinstall my flood light on the base that he installed before siding. In the center there is a hole for the wires and for what I thought were for attaching the fixture to the bar that is attached to the metal electric box. We...

Re: Ridge vent, gable vent

Thanks Homesealed. Bad cell phone photos. :( This is across the top. You can see that they started at the bottom of the left side of the radius and then continued across to the bottom of the right of the arch. Top of arch just about touches the soffit, and the soffit with the oversized gutter extend...

Re: Ridge vent, gable vent

Can't really complain about the man and his workers otherwise. Did a good job at a good price. I do worry about one other thing and I also asked him about it this morning. We replaced all windows in the house but two nice Marvins in the kitchen. One of them has a geometric dome at the top and is inc...

Re: Ridge vent, gable vent

Owner came today and I spoke to him about the gables. He did get a little defensive. He said that on his new construction that he does not put them in, but since I was grandfathered he replaced them. Stated that it cost him more money to put them in as he had to buy them and install around them. He ...

Re: Ridge vent, gable vent

No Access in the closets to the area above the rooms. I have a raised ranch and the two upstairs bedrooms are in the roof. Walls and ceiling are divided by sheetrock attached to the rafters. So on either side of the walls I have triangular a crawl that I can get into from the closets. Above the ceil...

Re: Ridge vent, gable vent

Thanks Homesealed! I will be kind. :) Here is a photo of the soffit covering that he used. Rather than holes in every row it skips 2. Are there enough holes in the material to get a good flow? They cut good sized holes in the sheathing, so that is not an issue. http://i824.photobucket.com/albums/zz1...

Re: Ridge vent, gable vent

Thanks Masterext, analysisparalysis and WOW. I see they definately need to be closed up. One is easy to get to from the inside as it is in the garage and is right there, not an issue at all. The other two are not that simple. Theyare up at the top of the house and there is no access to the inside cr...

Ridge vent, gable vent

Okay, not exactly a window question, but I have gotten so much help here with my current project from such helpful and knowledgeable people that I hope it is okay to ask this here. Contractor that did our windows also did our roof, and he finished the siding Friday. Only thing left to do is install ...

Re: Install nailing fin over rigid foam?

It is preferable to caulk the flange but you should be okay with the sealed flanges via the membrane tape. Don't caulk the Tyvek as you can trap moisture against the home in some cases. Have him caulk the remaining units. Thanks WOW!!! That was a fast response! If it is bad to chalk between the tyv...

Re: Install nailing fin over rigid foam?

Thanks WOW. Since techically you can nail through the foam I let him. This is what the contractor did with the first few windows. Windows are Simonton 5500 with factory installed nailing fin and J channels. Tyveked house including the window jams, remove tyvek from sill and up jam a bit to expose wo...

Install nailing fin over rigid foam?

Having the house sided and have a question about nailing the new construction windows. Does the window fin get nailed through the 1/2 rigid foam or does one need furring strips?

Thanks!

Permits for Windows???

i know that permits could be governed by local and state rules, but typically do replacing windows require permits? Having the house sided and the contractor has permits for siding. The contractor states that permits are not required for the windows. The windows are new construction going into exist...

Re: Windows Installed Correctly

I am no expert, but I have a question. Is it possible that these windows are somewhat next to each other, but the window openings were not the same, and the company ordered the windows the same size for so that they were not mis matched from the outside?
