Re: Replacement Window Extending Past Outside Window Trim
Thanks, HomeSealed. You and all the other pros are providing an excellent service to the general homeowner looking for information on replacement windows. While this obviously helps your own businesses (and why not), the fact that you spend so much time responding to others outside your service area...

Re: Replacement Window Extending Past Outside Window Trim
Well, with the huge wind and rain we've just had, no problems with any leaks as far as I can tell. But as I mentioned on some later posts, our installer cut the old nailing fin (against what HomeSealed recommends/prefers) and used low expansion foam to seal up to the back of the old nailing fin and ...

Re: Incomplete installation and withholding payment
Interestingly, the glazing problem is on all the windows in the exact same corner. Contractor just called an is ordering all new sashes.

Re: Incomplete installation and withholding payment
Still waiting for the work to be completed, but I discovered another problem not present on the other Sunrise windows installed on previous orders. With this latest install, I noticed the black "rubber" sealant or adhesive around the glass is not straight and neat. Instead, now it looks re...

Re: Incomplete installation and withholding payment
Well, as a customer, I was and am much more comfortable paying as little as possible until I know I get what I paid for. In fact, one window company (full showroom, located in high end neighborhood) suddenly closed shop not long after they quoted me on new windows. Local message boards show angry cu...

Re: Window flashing without disturbing external trim
It would have been nice for the contractors to explain their installation options to me rather than come in with heat lamps and double-hung sample windows. In fact, instead of their sample units, I wish they would come in with samples showing a cross sections of an installed window unit showing how ...

Re: Window flashing without disturbing external trim
Delaware Mike: I definitely like the deeper jamb (see my photo from a previous posting on sash bowing). Before the windows were flush with the inside wall, but now I'll be able to put blinds or shades inside the jamb which I prefer. As to the rest of your details, that's a little above my head to pi...

Re: Window flashing without disturbing external trim
So the remaining windows are almost complete. From the outside, the frame is flush with the original external trim with about 1/4 inch gap. From the inside (before the jamb and casing was installed), there's a slightly wider gap (maybe a 1/2 of an inch between the frame and the wall studs. Also from...

Re: Incomplete installation and withholding payment
That was exactly my concern, Anthony. I wanted to make sure my contractor had an incentive to finish the job in a timely manner and fix my concerns. The amount he had asked for seemed to be enough to walk away from the job. I feel better knowing that the money I still haven't paid him is worth way m...

Re: Incomplete installation and withholding payment
I spoke with the contractor and he said any amount I was comfortable with, he'd appreciate. I said I'd give him 40% and he was fine with that. They should have inspected the windows first, shouldn't they? Oh well, I think in the end the contractor will take care of us and well be happy. This informa...

Re: Incomplete installation and withholding payment
They are a small company more than 20 years old. They are a Sunrise Restorations dealer. We don't have a contract with payment details, only an order form. We didn't have problems the first time.
As for the car example, I wouldn't expect rust or dings before even taking possession of a new car.

Re: Incomplete installation and withholding payment
I agree. But the most I think I should pay is 50% and pay the other half when complete. If he would have asked for that, I wouldn't have been surprised. But asking for 85% seemed far from reasonable and made me question his motives. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Incomplete installation and withholding payment
Yes, I was perfectly okay with the fix, but was shocked when he asked for so much given the issues. That really threw me off.

Incomplete installation and withholding payment
Curious to see what others believe would be an appropriate way to deal with a contractor problem. I'm wrapping up the last seven windows in my house, about $7K. Mostly triple pane, woodgrain laminate, full tear out with matching laminate trim. I'm using the same contractor for the third time. The fi...
