Re: Paintable interiors?
I didn't like option 2 either. My woodwork is a cream/white color and the 800 is only available in white, "almond" and wood grains. None of them work, and I couldn't count on the dealer having access to Starmark, hence option 2. As it turns out, the window order is already in manufacturing...

Paintable interiors?
My whole downstairs will be white OKNA 800's. I'm 95% good with that. But I have a bay window (picture window framed by 2 double-hungs) and I really want the replacements to match the woodwork there. I also realized I want SDL for those 3 windows. Complicating things, I'm under contract and the wind...

Re: Comments on the quality of this work?
On another note, which window did you end up choosing Well I couldn't decide between the 800 or the 500, so I got both  10 800's downstairs where the aesthetics would be nice, and 14 500's upstairs saves me almost $900. I decided that the OKNA's are better than the Gorells, but I didn't want t...

Re: Comments on the quality of this work?
The installer just came over to measure windows and discuss how he performs an install. He will use a Fein tool to kerf the clapboards in order to fit PVC clad coil stock, right down to the sheathing. That's what I wanted. For that, he needs an extra $25/window - which I am happy to pay. Thanks to e...

Re: Comments on the quality of this work?
What about the vertical detail shown here? 100_2595.JPG I was quoted $635 each for OKNA 800 Deluxe's with grids, full screens, full PVC cap installation. Do I have a right to that install? Or should I expect this: gap2.JPG I'm not finding any company that has convinced me they can install like the f...

Comments on the quality of this work?
Capping crop detail.jpg DSC_4099.jpg Can you folks comment on the quality of this job? This isn't my house, it's an example of a prospective installer's work. I noticed there are some finish nails face-nailed thru the corners, and presumably puttied over. Is that OK? I'm not sure I like the detail ...

Re: Replacing 22 double hungs
I agree that Okna is the better window of those two. I question the wisdom of Soft-lite trying to do a makeover on the Gorell lines, and believe that Soft-lite has done lasting damage to their reputation in the way they handled the whole Gorell purchase and subsequent warranty claims. I strongly ag...

Re: Replacing 22 double hungs
Right on with .07. I just got his email: "Air infiltration: .07 cfm at 25 mph Water: R40 48mph U Value on total window: .19 These are AAMA Gold Label Certified Performance Ratings from the NFRC". That info is pretty thin, but when he told me the glass package he's quoting is Thermal Master...

Re: Replacing 22 double hungs
Randy, I'll insist on an AAMA report, thanks for that info. WOW, in January '10 you posted that the 5155's AL is 0.17. Is the 5155 the foam and reinforced version of the 5100? .17 might not be terrible, but it isn't great from what I read here. So here’s where I’m at, and I’m near a decision: $12,50...

Re: Replacing 22 double hungs
Thanks again for the comments. I was close to deciding on the 500 due to aesthetics and its great AL number. The VT and SHGC numbers also favor OKNA compared to the Gorell triple pane. Then the Gorell guy called me today. I told him I was leaning toward OKNA, and gave him my reasons. He claims that ...

Glass options for Southern NH
I'm in Southern NH and my house has wide open exposure, with most windows facing East or West. Only 2 face South, and 4 face North. Right now, the contenders are Gorell 5100, Okna 500 or maybe 800, and Simonton Asure or 5500. I'm a little concerned about thermal stress on the glass, as my East/West ...

Re: Replacing 22 double hungs
Thanks for the responses, gents. I met with the company representing Okna and here's an update - 500's are about $700 each (with grids, installed, and capped with PVC clad coil). This compares to $575 for Gorell 5100g's (apples to apples, except for the 5100 is triple pane). I thought they'd be abou...

Replacing 22 double hungs
First post, been lurking for several months... I am replacing 8 32x61's, and 14 32x52's (oriel 8 over 12's). I just got a quote for Gorell 5100g's to replace all 22 windows: $12,650 (575 each). Includes grids, vinyl "color" (not sure I want it), and "free" triple glaze (he called...
