Re: Need help - questioning an installation of Okna 800 windows

-The siding weep hole "issue" is nonsense. yes vinyl siding is supposed to have weep holes. - The siding cuts underneath look normal - The overlap of the side trim over the sill where it doesn't fit tight is sloppy work. Aesthetic really, but sloppy. - The concerning part here IMO is the h...

Re: Need help - questioning an installation of Okna 800 windows

@Zev, there is a "best practice" way of doing things, and then a "meets acceptable minimum standards" way of doing things-- along with everything in between. Keep in mind, the former will be much more $$$ than the latter. Based on the description and video, it LOOKS to be above t...

Re: Water barrier interface

+1. On a brick opening, whatever (actual) flashing exists is typically done before the brick is installed, meaning that it is not possible to replace in a standard window install. If the window is being downsized or a brickmold trim exists, some aluminum capping would be installed that would integra...

Re: Window Replacement Advice: Vytex, Sunrise, Pella, SoftLite

Vytex and Sunrise are good. Softlite Elements and Elite are also good, however the Classic is a significant step down IMO and I wouldn't consider it.

Most importantly, I'd check to see if Windows on Washington serves your location. They are the best in the business.

Re: Air Infiltration or AI as important as R value..

+1. To be clear, AI does not have any impact on R value or U value, however you are correct in the premise that those thermal ratings are of limited value without considering AI in the overall performance of a home. As far as shopping for windows with good AI ratings, it's both tricky and stupidly o...

+1, pics would help. It sounds like the installation details would be more impactful than the window itself based on your explanation, but pics would tell a bit more.

Re: Casement Window Quote

Agreed. The Polaris is a solid window, and as long as their 25 years in business comes with a good reputation (google reviews, bbb, etc) then that sounds like strong option. The 50 year family business is a great story, but the choice of window says that they are not the most knowledgeable choice he...

Re: Provia Aspect or Endure?

Provia is the window du jour for all of the "chuck in truck" types these days. Years ago it was Alside (and other AMI brand variations), and they don't exactly have a sterling reputation. Provia makes very nice doors, so what you have here is everyone and their brother selling this window ...

Re: Alside Mezzo X Wincore 7700 x Simonton 6100/6500 ... All for the same price

Unfortunately I can't. The reason being is that pricing is largely dependent on the individual dealer and their size, business model, etc. The product itself just one of many things that contribute to the price... I can say this, @$15k for 13 windows you are in the normal range (albeit on the lower ...

Re: Alside Mezzo X Wincore 7700 x Simonton 6100/6500 ... All for the same price

What would you do? I would find better options. The Simonton window is okay, however box store installs are very hit or miss at best. The pay pennies on the dollar to installers compared to other window replacement companies in my experience, you can judge how the lowest paid installers in town mig...

Re: New windows in NC

Good feedback from WoW. Regarding the meeting rail on the sliders, you should have an interlock where a vinyl lip from one sash locks into a corresponding lip on the other. There would be multiple layers of weatherstripping as well, not just that one that you can see. I'd open both sashes slightly a...

+1. I'd check out the Nerd if you haven't done so.

On the products, the Vytex is the only option that I'd consider of those three.

Re: Soft Lite Windows vs Hayfield / Richlin

+1 regarding soft lite. As far as richlin and hayfield, as you've stated, same company. I know that the Hayfield brand is the one sold in Menards stores, I believe that those are more budget oriented models. The Richlin window isn't bad (higher models), I just don't like the Silver label certificati...

Re: How to order replacement glass for a window

Your best course of action here will be to order the glass needed right from Milgard, in which case you won't need an exact size of the glass. Ideally if you can find a label with serial number, that would be all you needed. If not, I'd work with them to figure out how to identify the window. Only i...

Re: Windows Replacement in Central VA

Good feedback above. As far as the pricing, it sounds like you have 2) banks of 3 windows for a total of 6? If someone is 3x's your $6k budget, that doesn't sound right. If they are wood full frames with stained interior, new refinished casing, etc you are pushing closer to that, but no way somethin...
