Re: sunrise versus softlite vinyl replacement windows

+1 You really can't go wrong with either window assuming a high quality installation. I sell both windows but I personally like the aesthetics of the Sunrise a little better. Some dealers have been reporting a drop off in quality control with Soft-lite recently.

Re: Simonton 5500 Casement

Have you actually seen a sample of the Simonton Casement? I don't mean a picture or a Simonton Double-hung, I mean an actual casement window?

Re: Installation-Winteq Foam vs Fiberglass Batt

I'm not aware of any manufacturer who considers the use of foam something that would automatically void their warranty per se. However, anything done during the installation process that cause the window to fail will invariably void any warranty. So if the installer uses standard foam that is made t...

Re: Measure for "half circle" retrofit window

Standard Circle Top. Just measure height and width. The height should be 50% of the width. Even if it isn't, that's all you should need to order it. If the factory needs something else, they will call you. Worst case is to do a template as I suggested.

Re: Measure for "half circle" retrofit window

Nope, I just installed an eyebrow with legs. A taller version is called an eyebrow with extended legs.

Re: very confused in Mass

Sorry, I never comment on price unless it seems very high or too low to be real. Best advice is to get a couple of estimates and some references. Places like Angies list are also good resources for finding a good contractor.

Re: very confused in Mass

You can usually get a better price and a better install by going through a local Simonton dealer. They carry the same windows sold through HD in Home Services. The Andersen 400 window is not my favorite but as long as you are willing to perform the maintenence on it, such as cauking, it should be fi...

Re: Measure for "half circle" retrofit window

It could also be what's called an eyebrow with a leg. If you have any doubt, take as many measurements as you can. If still unsure, I'd make a template. Tyvek works really well for this. Photographs are very helpful too.

Re: very confused in Mass

Most of the better quality window manufacturers do not sell directly to homeowners or handymen. If you want a good vinyl window that you can buy without going through a dealer, then I'd suggest looking at Simonton. It's going to be about the best you can do. Although Simonton's aren't top eschelon w...

Re: Extra Tall Windows

A double hung has equal size sashes. An oriel is a double hung with the lower sash smaller than the upper sash. There is also a reversed oriel where the lower sash is larger than the upper sash.

Are you trying to conform to egress requirements?

Re: Extra Tall Windows

Yes it does but you need to check and make sure you are in compliance with code. In addition, expect to pay considerably more for windows this size because it's likely the manufacturer is going to have to install special balances. This is going to be a huge window with very heavy sashes that will li...

Re: Sash reinforcement question

I would not be concerned about re-inforcements in Detroit. I think the price difference could be put towards improving the energy efficiency of other areas of your house like adding more attic insulation and sealing air leaks. Sunrise is one of the only window manufacturers who specifically covers w...

Re: Extra Tall Windows

Soft-lite maxes at 79". Sunrise will go up to 92.75" You will need tempered glass on the lower sash at that height to comply with code.
