Help with replacement sliders

#1 Post by coopera »

We are doing roof, siding and windows and live in the Long Island, NY area.

We are in the process of speaking with several contractors who will take care of the entire project. We intend to replace original Levit aluminum sliders with vinyl replacement sliders and convert several of the old sliders to double hungs. With one exception, we have not been bowled over when test driving some of the locally manufactured/locally available sliders (approx 25" x 45"). Not so much as the specs on paper go but more the way the sashes just pop right out, the chessy feel of the lock latches, and the overall fell when operating. The open/close movement action feels cheap and cheesy on the sliders we've come across thus far and the locks cheap and awkward to latch closed.

One of the local contractors we are considering (they've been on extreme makeover a few times) uses the quantum2 exclusively. As soon as we played with these windows in the showroom we know that they were far better than anything else we've seen to date. We really like these.

There are one or two other local contractors we really, really like on the roof and siding front who would use Adersen 400s on the double hungs and one Anderson picture window but their default builders grade slider dealers windows seem like junk. We want to work with one of these contractors if only we could suggest a slider that works for both of us.

Any advice on decent quality, but not top of the line sliders (low e, argon, solid contstruction, tight & meaty feeling sliding action, good latch lock, and maybe even a partial open lock)?

We don't want the top of the line because resources also need to be allocated toward siding and roofing.

Schuco has the best slider therre is. it's an in-line slider, well constructed and just glides open and closed.
Fenex, a user on this board works in your area, I believe, and has Schuco products.
if you're price conscious think about he double pane, krypton, filled.

FenEx is no longer in New York. He just moved to Northern Illinois up along the Wisconsin border.
