Simonton 5500/9800; Q on aesthetics for Bill or other dealer

#1 Post by Will91 »

Hello everyone:

I have been impressed with the Simonton Reflections 5500 and then became aware that ABC Supply can provide the 9800. After doing a search here, I turned up an old thread by Bill. Are the pictures included with Bill's old post still accurate? They are for double hungs but I need sliders.

If the pictures are still accurate and also apply to the aesthetics for sliders, then I think the sash design with the extra step-down bevel (for lack of a better description) is much nicer on the 9800 (not to mention the attractive lift rail).

The pictures are accurate as it applies to the double hung’s but the 5500 and the 9800 slider use the exact same sash and lift that is shown on the 5500 sample.

The only difference between the 5500 & 9800 slider is the 9800 is standard w/ double strength glass and the warranty on the 9800 provides 20 years of glass breakage.

Thanks Bill. That's too bad since the 9800 sash on the DH is quite elegant. I thought at least the lift design on the 9800 slider would be the same as the 9800 DH.

You can upgrade the 5500 to double strength glass for less than $10 per window. If you are considering sliders, I'd go with the 5500. We are currently offering an upgrade which includes Double Strength glass, Super Spacer, 1" IG unit, LoE 366 and argon for less than $30 per window. It may be that you can find a Simonton dealer to offer something similar as a package. This upgrade gets the U-factor below .30 and the SHGC to around .22 so it qualifies for the $1500 Stimulus rebate.

Thanks Skydawggy. I'm spoiled after seeing the pictures of the 9800 DH sash. I don't suppose it is possible to order the 9800 slider with the 9800 sash design??

Sliders are very popular here in Colorado for reasons unknown to me. Would it be worthwhile to consider the 9800 DH if I like the 9800 sash design? Any drawbacks? I think everyone would agree the Simonton frame and sash is pretty wide, would the frame and sash width on a 9800 DH be any thinner than the 5500 slider?

I appreciate this input. Here in CO, Simonton does not have a large presence and there are no dealers where I can actually go to see displays. Everything I have learned has been through the generous folks on this board, the Simonton site, and the 5500 DH display they have here at Norandex.

Bill:

I just wanted to let you know the Simonton 9800 slider sample arrived at ABC supply and while it had the same sash design as the 5500, it did come with an applied lift handle (not the extruded version like the 5500). I was happy to see that at least this feature of the 9800 series was retained on the 9800 slider.

Hi:

Here is a photo of the Simonton 9800 slider lift handle and sash. I really like the applied handle handle vs. the extruded rail. Hope I got the terms right. Enjoy!

Is that veiw from the exterior. I only ask because of the frame bevel.

Hi Anthony:

View is from the interior of the slider showing the sash, applied handle, and frame. I can also post an exterior view tomorrow.
