window shopping

#1 Post by kcy »

Hello. I've done some research...(ok, a lot of research!). I think we've narrowed it down but would love some help. Which brand is probably best -- Simonton (Vista?) or Gorell? Other? We live just north of Atlanta, getting ready to retire, and plan to stay in the house until they haul us out. We moved here about 4 years ago -- so also having a hard time finding/deciding on a contractor. Our main objective is to have windows that keep out the wind, etc., -- we have actually watched our curtains blow/move when it's windy! And it can get cold here in the winter! FYI: the Gorell rep said it's better to replace siding & windows at the same time (something about capping or wrapping?). We will def. not be replacing siding this year, but it's on the list. Hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

With the right contractor you can do windows 1st then siding.

Wood, single pane, most are standard size. House was built in '90. The siding is ok.., even tho at closing we had to sign statements acknowledging the siding had had a class action lawsuit (LOL, the money pit). Bought the place for the view -- beautiful small lake borders the backyard -- so far, still worth it. Thanks for the quick replies.

If you are going to do siding within the next year or two, you should absolutely do them together.

Doing so will eliminate any duplication of efforts and wasted labor in the future.

If you want, you can consider a full tear out with a new construction flange application as well for a maximum viewable glass and most comprehensive installation.

Would love to do the entire remodel (windows/siding) and intended to when we first moved in. BUT, like many Boomers, the recession hit and fouled up our retirement, $, plans. We've been doing "triage" ever since (already replaced water heater, HVAC unit, & roof). In another few years we could probably do windows & siding together. Maybe we should just wait??

If the windows are not falling apart, I would wait or see if you can finance the whole thing and spread out the payments.

One window has some big time rot going on, but none of the others. They just leak ... wind (haha). We've lived this long with them, we can wait. Thanks so much for all the help.
