INSTALLATION OF REPLACEMENT WINDOWS WITH SLIDE-IN NAIL FIN

#1 Post by armedinky »

MY CONTRACTOR, INSTALLED THESE WINDOWS IN MY NEW GARAGE (AS NEW CONSTUCTION WINDOWS). THEY ARE HALLMARK WINDOWS BY BAYSHORE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE PROPER WAY TO INSTALL THEM.
HE DID NOT USE CAULKING OR TAPE FLASHING AND HE DID NOT INSTALL THE 4 SCREWS & CAPS THAT CAME WITH THE UNITS.
MY GARAGE HAS VINYL SIDING SO HE ADDED J-CHANNEL AROUND THE WINDOW.
I AM AFRAID THEY WILL LEAK.

YES, THEY DID PUT HOUSE WRAP ON FIRST. BUT THE INSTRUCTION SAYS TO USE CAULKING OR FLASHING TAPE ON THE CORNERS OF THE SLIDE IN NAIL FINS.
PLUS, THEY DID NOT PUT THE 4 SCREWS IN THE HOLES IN THE SIDE CASING OF THE WINDOWS. INSTRUCTIONS, SAY THAT PUTTING NAILS IN THE NAILING FIN IS NOT ENOUGH.
DO YOU THINK MY WINDOWS ARE SECURE & WATER TIGHT?

It is preferable to flash and install a self healing membrane tape, but they are probably okay with house wrap, the fin, and the siding.

We see homes without housewrap that are still okay.

Too many variables for me to say yes or no, but theoretically if everything is lapped properly you should be okay. There is a pretty broad spectrum that covers the difference between what would be considered "workmanlike" (aka: the bare minimum) and best practices. Most installs fall somewhere between, although based purely on the info that you've given, this seems to be closer to the former than the latter. Whether or not that meets your expectations depends on what you were promised by this company and whether you paid for a "premium, max-protection" install, or one that is "good enough".

When I start a new construction flanged installation, I try to encourage the homeowners to check out what and why we are doing things to prevent water/air/bug infiltration which tends to set their minds at ease regarding questions like this. Before my projects even start I like to send them several YouTube video links to DuPont's Flashing system video shorts.

If that is all that they are doing, you may as well do the install yourself. Beneath the bare minimum in my book.
