How is a picture window replaced?
I live in a house with 6 picture windows that need replacing. The exterior of my house is brick. How will these picture windows be replaced, do they break out the old IGU glass and leave the frame in place? Does the new replacement frame sit inside the old frame or cover it?
Ken,
I am replacing picture windows as well, but the frames are wood. They will come out leaving just the house framing intact. The new windows will fit the hole, caulking will be applied to all exterior surfaces of the the IG unit going in, some sort of trim wood will face a portion of the ege of the new windows holding them in place since there will be no nailing fin on a retrofit. For existing vinyl, most likely the will be entirely removed because most warranties would not be given if the job mounted into some old existing vinyl frame.

But how can they remove the vinyl frame if the window was originally installed with an integral nailing fin as new construction? Is the frame cut from the nailing fin leaving the nailing in place?mikey105 wrote:Ken,

In most cases when replacing any unit in a bricked opening we cut the entire unit out. We cut around the unit with a reciprocating saw and free it from its nailing fin. Ounce the window is removed we then trim back any protruding areas or fin left from cutting. It's very important to make sure the new window being ordered fits back into the brick opening with some room for shimming. Ounce the new window is inserted and shimmed in place we screw it down from the inside in all four corners. If the window is big we will also add screws in the center of each side. We then use a low expansion foam to seal around the inside of the unit. Ounce this sets up it also acts as an adhesive and holds the window from any future movement. We then caulk the outside with Quad, Novaflex or Sikaflex, depending on the color needed. The inside is finished off with a new jamb box and the unit is all done! Works out great every-time!!
