Dealer Customizes Windows

#1 Post by LeakyWindows »

Is there an opinion about dealers who customize windows made by a manufacturer? This seems to happen with smallish manufacturers.

The salesman characterizes these customizations as improvements - and perhaps they are. Would changes impact on the AAMA certification and NFRC ratings?

The manufacturer is RJT Industries out of Woodbridge, VA. The dealer says he asks for two low-e glass coatings and perhaps some other things.

Nothing custom about what they say. The glass is made in bulk and while there are coatings that are climate and exposure specific, it is not made on a 1-off basis.

More important facts to consider are if you installer/company knows what is the right combination for your climate.

It might be a situation where a manufacturer gives a few specific options to one dealer on an "exclusive" basis. With the double coat low-e , as WoW said, there is nothing super special about that in and of itself, however perhaps the manufacturer only sells that too the one particular dealer in the market. Do these "upgrades" make quantifiable differences? Depends on what it is. Double low-e does as it pertains to the thermal (NFRC) ratings. Other things like sash reinforcement can affect the structural (AAMA) ratings.
