For those self-installers

We recently bought a home, built in 1984. We plan to replace the windows ourselves. We noticed though, when putting up blinds and curtains, that there seems to be a thin metal frame in the wall around all the windows. What is this and how will it affect our ability to replace the windows? Is this something that is attached to the windows (which are also metal themselves) or is it separate? Do we have to remove the metal parts in the wall, or will the windows come out separately so we can just set the new window in the current opening?
