Vinyl Window Replacement Into Masonary Block
Vinyl Window Replacement Into Masonary Block
Looking at replacing our aluminum windows with Milgard's Tuscany vinyl windows, and the installer wants over $2K to install 7 windows, and none is anything odd or huge. Our house is made out of 8x8x16 split face block with no built out RO of wood, just the block was used for the RO. When I installed the windows that are in there now, I just shimmed all sides to level, and used masonary screws to secure to RO, and caulked. Can I do this with vinyl windows? I'm afraid the screws will pull through the vinyl. Is there any other way to secure vinyls in this configuration?

The windows come equip with screw holes pre-drilled in the frame that are for accommodating the attachment screws.

Anthony,
I don't have one of those cool passwords for the contractor's board. Do you try to catch a mortar line when you tapcon in block when possible? I done this method when installing basement windows.

No, because we normally use the predrilled holes. You need a longer than normal bit because of the window frame thickness.

What about the screws pulling through the vinyl?

Why would screws pull through the vinyl? Do you live in a neighborhood where they hook a truck and chain to the windows to break into the homes?
Re: Vinyl Window Replacement Into Masonary Block
When you tighten them down against the vinyl, I'm thinking they'll pull through or distort the surface. No?

No more than any other type of screw. A good installer will know when to stop and won't drive the screw through the frame.bfr57 wrote:When you tighten them down against the vinyl, I'm thinking they'll pull through or distort the surface. No?
