How to repair Andersen sliding windows?

#1 Post by dlabrie »

I have Andersen Perma-Shield, Gliding Windows that were installed in 1973. On the glass is the marking- 12 AW 72 XI. The frames are in fine shape but the weather stripping is cracked and broken or missing. On windy days the curtains move and here in NH that is costly. 3 are approx 4X8', 2 are 4X5' and 6 are 3X3'.

I can take the sashes out but don't know what to do from there. Has anyone replaced the vinyl insulating strips adhered to the sash and the vinyl runners on the sill track?

I can see the various parts here http://www.andersenwindows.com/homeowne ... Window.pdf

Thanks for the help,
David

Utility knife and a good blade should be able to slide the blade behind the weatherstripping and attempt to separate it from the vinyl cladding.

The issue is that vinyl "glue" is not really glue at all but more like a liquid melting iron. In effect, PVC cement emulsifies the surface layer of the PVC so that it melts into the layer below. Getting that weatherstripping to separate is the difficult part.
