how to replace springs

#1 Post by cisz »

We're trying to repair the springs in these types of windows. (Pictures are of the shoe? in the frame and the spring? in the sash).

Help appreciated.

Better pictures will help here but it looks like the frame is notched to allow the constant force balance to be removed. If you are referring to the pivot pin on the sash, that can be unscrewed usually.

These folks are great for parts: http://www.blainewindow.com/index.php

Yep hard to tell by the pic.
But I would guess that you looking for the tilt latch buttons or assemblies on top of the sash.
Pivot pins are on the bottom of the sash and engage into the balance shoe.

Thanks.

This is a picture of the spring and shoe? The notch wasn't big enough to get the whole part out without causing the spring to bend. I guess we need a frame spreader?Image

Heat gun is fine as long as you are easy on it and heat it up slowly. You can spread the frame and it will go back once you put heat back on it.

Thanks.

I couldn't find the replacement parts at Blaine. Not sure what they call them but there's nothing under "coil balance".

Also, the youtube videos I've seen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjnKTzi-E0Y) show the pin fitting into the shoe easily but on these windows it looks like you have to slide the pins into the shoes by unscrewing the pins and manually pushing them in.

Not usually the case.

Most times with units like that, you will tilt the unit in and then push the one shoe far enough down to one side to allow it to slide out and then reverse to put it back.

A bit less user friendly but still easy enough.

I just notch the frame above to allow the new balance to slide down. Most people have no clue what the notch is for. I've had numerous reps show me that trick. I've broken and ate more Windows trying the heat gun thing. I have no patience says my Son and Wife!!
