We're planning to replace a picture window in our kitchen with french doors to open onto a future deck. We've started to take bids from contractors for it as part of our kitchen renovations, but aren't sure what features we need to look for to make sure they're secure and energy efficient. Our home is near Pittsburgh, PA.
Also, about how much should we expect to spend for simple, quality doors?

6' ? Double active? color? Grids? hardware? screens? IMO Andersen has the best price point with good energy and security.

+ 1 to Anthony's comments. Marvin's are well built also, but pricey. I believe you'll pay over $6,000.00 installed for their TOL.

Don't skimp on quality on french doors. They are difficult enough to seal at the top and bottom of the astrigal without having poor quality to deal with too. Also, make sure the doors have a multipoint locking system that locks the doors together. A french door with only a deadbolt is very easy to break through by pushing the top and bottom of the doors in far enough to unlatch the panels with a screwdriver. All it takes is a strong push and the doors will open deadbolt and all.
