transom window removal on a vinyl house

#1 Post by gwiz »

I've got a house with vinyl siding on 3 sides and transom windows around the family room first floor. Almost all (5 of 6) the transoms have fogged and I'd like to repair or replace them (prefer to repair). What is the secret to removing these transom windows :?: I understand they come out from the outside. Does the vinyl framing have to come off too?

What type of material is the window? Vinyl, wood , aluminum? Post a picture if you can. Depending on the age of the windows, they may still be under warranty. A glass company would be able to replace the failed IG units.

They are about 14 years old and are also made of vinyl. After building this house (our first) we learned a lot about the builder and their tireless ability to cut corners at every single opportunity. They are contractor grade windows with a 10 year warranty. I'll see if I can post some pics today.

Thanks.

Most units have a sash bead that retains the glass in the frame.
Remove the sash bead, Cut loose the glazing tape or sealant. Extract the glass. Wet bed the frame, install new glass, reinstall glazing bead.
