Simonton 5500 or PoFinish Brickmould 600

#1 Post by williamsjr22 »

On a quote on one of the Simonton dealers he quoted the ProFinish Brickmould 600 and the Simonton 5500. The Brickmould 600 was half the price and still qualifies for the tax credit. Is the 5500 worth double the price? The ProFinish Brickmould quoted are all casements with the supercept, Low E Softcoat(Prosolar). (U-factor: .27; SHGC: .24) The 5500's were supercept, Low E 366. (U-factor: .27; SHGC: .17).

Has anyone installed both of these? Can I justify spending double on the 5500s.

Thanks

Depends on how many windows, the price and some details on the job would be helpful.

I am looking to replace 6 casements. The Profinish brickmould 600 are $250 and the Simonton 5500 are $500. only 2 of the casements get a lot of sunlight. I am also going to replace 3 large bow windows with the 5500's but they all get direct sun most of the day.

I think that's an incredibly low price on the 600. I honestly don't see how your contractor can stay in business selling that cheap. Tread lightly here, something doesn't sound right to me.

Thanks, that is good to know. I will get another quote on the 600 to see how it compares.

Let me also add that one of the reasons it doesn't sound right, is the price on the 5500 casements seems in line with what one would expect to pay for them. The price on the 600 is just wacky in comparison. There just isn't that huge of a gap in the wholesale cost. labor costs aren't normally affected by window prices so that would mean the 600 window would cost $250 less than the 5500. The dealer sounds desperate to lowball the price that much. I'd ask if he will order the windows with no deposit and just see how he reacts.

The problem with these types of lowball prices is the dealer often is desperate to get a sale because he needs the deposit money to finish another job that went wrong and/or his supplier has cut him off and he needs the money to pay them off. Hopefully this is just a very good deal but you know what they say about a deal being too good to be true.

I found out what happened and there was some confusion. The 250 was only for the left hinge side and there was a line item for 250 for the right hand side. So with the cost the same, which is a better window?

I knew there was something wrong with that quote.

The Reflections 5500 would be your better choice. Even better than that would be the Simonton Prism Platinum. It's basically the same window as the 5500 but comes with double strength glass, Super Spacer and a 25 year glass breakage warranty standard.

Profinish 600 is a great new construction window.
5500 and prism platinum are great replacement windows.
Yes you can add integral fin and j to the replacement windows.
Bow and Bays are 5500/platinum only.
I like the 600b detail and added strength.
I prefer the 3/4" coil balance in the DH
super spacer only available in platinum.
With fin and j platinum cost same as 600b
plat with super spacer.

I ended up going with the 5500's with the supercept and double strength glass. They should be in any day. Thanks for your help!

After a year of going with the 5500's, I can say that I made the right choice. The large bay windows are full sun. My front rooms used to be 10-15 degrees difference in temperature. Now, I can sit right next to the window and it feels the same as the rest of the house. The Windows open and shut very easily for being extremely large.
