totally confused replacement windows HELP

#1 Post by rosebud »

We are replacing 10 windows and a large picture window. The quote seemed reasonable around $7600. I'm concerned about the U rating of 43 is that too high? Also any one have trouble with thermal industries replacements or GutterGap doing the replacements?

Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A rating of .43 means you are getting the worst glass they offer, and you are paying way too much for them.
A window like that should be about $250-$275 installed max.

For the kind of money you are talking, you could get something much, much nicer...and with a u-value of .20 or less.

As far as Guttercap, I'll be nice and abstain from comment.

Most all brands of any composition with low-e argon will give you a u-value of .32-.34, which is a definite advantage over what you were offered.
Brands with triple glazing will get you from .14 to .24 depending on brand and style of window.
What city are you located in? It may help folks here recommend someone.

(There is also the "request a quote" referral feature on the top of the page which helps support this site.)

We're in Joliet. I looked online trying to compare different kinds of windows. There is some difference but most boards mentioned its all in the installation. Thanks for helping.

It may help to go to a Home Improvement show and look around. That way you can actually see them all in one place and meet the dealers.

There was one in Tinley Park last weekend that you must have missed, but there will be another one in Naperville on March 24th - 26th. You will have about 20 window companies showing their wares and you will be able to see all the major brands. Just an idea.
