Simonton 5500 vs Thermal Industries 530 ...quick response ne

#1 Post by jsalvati »

We are looking at replacing all of our windows in our house with either the Simonton Reflections 5500 or the Thermal Industries 530. We live in the Utica, NY area, so our winters are cold and snowy. Which one of the 2 is the better option and why? We need to decide soon so any help would be appreciated.

How are the two being compared? (i.e. are they both triple pane, double, etc).

Installation details?

Both are double pane, low-e, with Argon gas, with grids, installed.
More interested in an opinion on both as far as quality of the windows, which is better? and why?

Both are decent windows. The Simonton is more widely distributed and has a great history of warranty support.

Agree. It's a toss up. Both are about equal on performance.

I'd consider both to be mid-range choices, however, I'd give the nod to Simonton with a true sloped sill (TI is pocket, with or with out snap-in slope). I also prefer the looks of the Simonton, they have a better reputation for service, and I also don't care for the "pressure-fit" tilt function of the upper sash... Overall though, the sill is the killer for me.

What do you mean by the "pressure-fit" tilt function of the upper sash?

The upper sash is held is by a bead on each side where you basically have to force the upper sash in and out to tilt, somewhat similar to the old jamb-liners in wood windows. The more common spring-loaded buttons are preferred.

Best for your money call your local ABC Supply and ask them to give you a few names of their best window subcontractors. Get estimates on using an AMCRAFT window. This is built by Simonton but private labeled for AMCRAFT. Why buy from them ? Best Warranty !!! (Nope I do not work for ABC, or for AMCRAFT.....just like their product and warranty).
