Window & Door replacement

#1 Post by beachgal »

I live on the North Carolina coast and have received quotes on Simonton, Reflections 5500 sliding glass doors (2) and (5) window replacements. Have also received quotes for Citation sliding glass doors and Jeld Wen windows (Tradition Plus). Would like to know which is the better choice.

Thanks to all who responded. Another question. Living within one block of the ocean, would the recommendation be vinyl or another product? should I upgrade the Simonton's as well, due to wind velocity and tropical storms? Any and all advise appreciated.

Skipped +5?

Do you have to have hurricane protection up there?

I have plywood to cover the front and back sliding glass doors, but am on the third floor and can't get to the windows.

The biggest thing I don't like about simonton is their impact windows.

Check your codes in your area by calling your building department. Don't get stuck on the bad side of a deal.

The building department may require proof that you can install your hurricane protection.

Okay, I'll take +5! My father has a place in Cape Hatteras which needs windows one day and I can't wait until he finally gives me the green light to put his old ones out of their misery. Of course once his new windows are in I'm sure a hurricane will come through and just wipe out his little fishing get away.

Hurricane Irene just missed us at Cape Fear and hit Cape Hatteras. What windows would you install at Hatteras, given the opportunity?

Most likely the Imperial LS from Soft-Lite with a laminated glass package.

PGT 500's or Shwinco EXT's would be my first choices.

The only place around my part that was offering the PGT lines was a Norandex, which closed down that particular location. I liked what I saw for the price. Since PGT has a dedicated impact window it may have a much more attractive price than what Soft-Lite would have?
