single/double hung window vs. crank out kind

#1 Post by avalon »

Will there be much difference in air flow if I get a crank out window (I think it's called an encasement window) instead of single hung or double hung window?

I'm having a hard time deciding between the two.

The brand I'm using is Milguard Styleline, if that makes a difference.

Ask the dealer for the AI/AL structural test results for each model you want to compare.
.01 or .02 are excellent.

The casement, as a result of its design, should be more airtight.

Will that difference be something that you feel will depend on the spread of the air-tightness and your sensitivity to leakage.

I'm wanting it to bring more air in when the window is open. I live in San Diego, Ca. I have a downstairs window and a bedroom that are now non-opening. I am replacing all my windows and I am going to make these windows ones that can open.

I live coastal so I was thinking that if I have them open to catch off shore breeze it will bring more air in my house, which is what I want.

I just wasn't sure if it made a difference or if there was anything else I should consider.

My main purpose for getting new windows is actually to reduce noise.

Noise does travel on air so in theory, the more airtight window will be better at blocking sound if all other things are considered equal.

Depending on what you have now, the new window might be a huge improvement.

If noise is an issue of concern, consider upgrading the glass to Laminated glass or offset glazing for additional sound attenuation.

I think you are on the right track in your logic for a casement.

Casement windows do not normally go as wide as doubl hungs, Max width typically ~36".
So sizes of the unit to be replaced may affect your decision.
Laminated glass will add alot of money to your product cost. You might need it to meet local building code since you are coastal. If your new windows are impact rated they will also provide more security. The noise reduction and security only function when the windows are closed of course.
So for your application it seems that casements bring several benifits:
ventilation, sound reduction, unobstructed view.
