low expansion foam - can we have a poll?

#1 Post by Will91 »

Hello everyone:

I will be foaming my windows and would be curious to know what all the pros are using on this board. Can we have a poll and some indication of satisfaction? The choices my local suppliers have are:

Dow Great Stuff Window/Door Pro
Hilti (is this made by Henkel?)
OSI Henkel TeQ

My DuPont "installation of integral flanged windows" also recommends Todol and Selena but can't find these locally - but we can include them in the poll.

Other choices seem to be DAP foam and GE foam (latex?)

Any low-expansion, closed cell foam will serve you well... I recently saw a demo of several different products which showed how much material is actually in each can (was an eye-opener  ), however, that is really only a concern for those of us who use a high volume. The Osi/Henkel Winteq product has been my choice over the past couple years.... (The Great Stuff fared worst in the test).

I use Todol products and have been for about 2 years, very good stuff.

Henkel makes the foam for Hilti too. The Osi/Henkel Winteq may be the same product......?

I have not used the Hilti labeled stuff, but I'd be very surprised if it was not the same.

I personally like the OSI TeQ-foam and Premier. They seem to be the same formula and act the same. Dow would be my least favorite as the bead seems to bubble up a lot and separate requiring multiple passes. Hilti makes a nice product, however the expansion rate seems to be more aggressive than that of the OSI and can throw my bead application off at first if I've not used the Hilti foam in a while. At double the price I can't find a justified reason to utilize Hilti either?

The OSI expands quicker and sets faster than the Dow product. It also propels all of the contents of the can more quickly and efficiently. I would not take a chance with Dap or anything latex.Keep in mind most here are sharing there experience using a professional foam applicator gun. The gun is the prefered dispenser for it's adjustability, ease of use and storage.

Nice breakdown, Todd. It would appear that the OSI is better at what it does... and I agree 100%. :D
