No. California Coast replacement windows?

#1 Post by 4kona »

Need to replace my single pane aluminum sliders. Live on the ocean in Northern California, SF Bay Area. Which window is recommended? Would appreciate some non-salesmen biased opinion. I've studied Milgard and Anderson. Any thoughts? Thanks very much for any and all help!!!

Which window of each line?

Does the window require an exterior color, option, etc?

Thanks for your return note. Would like to stay with neutral exterior color - not white but sand/beige/darks, etc would be ok. Interior color would like non-painted (low-maintenance) beige (not harsh white). Not sure what you mean by style? We are open to casement or again, sliders with fixed portions. House has a view of the ocean 150ft. away so want to maximize that view with less frame! Hope you can give us a direction?

On the door end of things, I would recommend something like a fiberglass in lieu of a steel because of the corrosion issues.

Same thing with the windows probably. Vinyl will have a little bit thicker frame as compared to some of the narrower fiberglass frames that are out there.

I would not use clad wood in this case unless you really need a real wood interior.

Well engineered vinyl will do just fine too but will run a bit thicker as I mentioned.

In terms of other items, what do you need the windows to look like (i.e. options, colors, look, finish, etc).

You should not have any trouble finding a sand tone/beige/almond window.
Material choices are clad wood, vinyl, and fiberglass.
I would look at the vinyl and fiberglass, vinyl will be cheaper.
You want great quality, great preformance. < .09 AI/AL
You may have coastal design issues which some one locally will know or check with your local building code officer.
Look for a lifetime warranty on the product.
After you have done all that you neeed to make sure you have a professional install.
ten years minimum experience with multiple product lines, use low expansion foam.
Avoid the slimy sales companies.

Thank You both for your help.
I was thinking Milgard or Anderson Renewal windows. Fiberglass or vinyl. Which as the best quality/recommendation?
I am well aware of slimy salesmen-I've been around awhile and have zero tolerance for them - but thanks for the warning!

So: Anderson renewal or Milgard - which should I look seriously to?

If it were me, neither.

There are far better fiberglass windows out there as well as better composite windows.

Have you tried to look at the Marvin or Inline fiberglass?

+1. If you were going to stick with vinyl, Simonton and Anlin are pretty well regarded out there.
