 Is this quote reasonable?

Author: T J (---.dsl.pltn13.pacbell.net)

I recently got two quotes for my two houses in the San Francisco south Bay.

House #1:
1. 48x60
2. 120x60
3. seven windows at 72x48
4. 60x42
5. Patio door 8.0x6.8
6. two windows at 48x24
7. two more windows at 18x42

House #2:
1. 48x36
2. 120x72
3. 48x36
4. Patio door 6.0x6.8
5. 54x36
6. two windows at 72x36
7. 36x24

The quotes for the first house is around 9.3k, the second is 5.8k, including tax, installation, and haul away. The brand is Milgard Classic/Amerimax or equivalent.

I am going to ask a few more quotes. But the first two seem pretty high. Is this the normal range or should I expect someone to do better? And how much wiggle room do they usually have on the first quote?

Thanks,

TJ

Looks on the high end to me. Plus, Amerimax is more expensive than Milgard Classic, I don't think it an apple to apple comparison.

good point, it really depends on the workmanship as well as the waranty...how long has the contractor been in buisness, how heathy is the real estate market? these kinds of comparison...most value, cheapest never lasts the longest.

All quotes are from companies with good BBB ratings. They all have been in business for at least 4-5 years. After looking at Anlin, Milgard classic, Amerimax, LBL, Royal, and more, they are all similar. Like buying mattresses.

They all promote the brand they carry exclusively, or at least less common. Whoever is selling Milgard I guess is making the smallest profit margin. Just because everyone and his cousin can sell you the same thing.

Back to my question, how much should I expect to spend, with say Milgard Classic?

We are Milgard dealers and the prices are close to what we would charge. Our formula is $30. per square foot for the product and install and all the rest that goes with measuring, ordering, delivery prep and cleaning including haul away. Milgard classic with low e and argon gas fill. We have had no problems with delivery or service.

Thanks dealer. That obvious gives me some back of the envelop calculation.

I may not choose Milgard after all. It is a quality window, but thanks to this board, I got myself into "high tech" brands.
