Installing smaller windows over drywall - is this okay?

Author: Dave Smith (---.dsl.renocs.nvbell.net)
Date:

I recently purchased several replacement vinyl windows for part of my house. I have replaced windows before by cutting the siding, cuttnig back part of the drywall, etc., then installing the window.
I decided since this house has two 5'X10' windows (and two 4'X 10' windows), that I would let Lowes' contractors install the big ones, and I would just install the smaller ones myself. I paid them the $45. to measure all the windows.
I picked up two of them to install myself and found that they had measured them all an inch smaller than normal (to put on the frame), that they said there is another way to install them by putting them right over the existing drywall and furring the side to screw them in.
I am uncomfortable with this. I can't find any other resources on this topic, but it makes me worry that I could have lots of potential problems by not going back to the frame. any feedback???? Thanks,
David
