I a working on my 13 year old house in maryland. I have been putting the windows on the back burner because of money. Where can a DIYer buy good windows in maryland, I am also willing to drive wherever. I have removed the drywall to find a 36.5" RO and a (34" alum cheapest available window). This install was so bad, when I removed the window sill and the filler board below it, I found the bottom of the window and the inside view of the window trim had one nail into the filler board I took out. I have foamed everything temporarily I am replacing down to the 2x4 RO. So I wood like a custom new construction. However, I have seen some relacement with nail fin. I found Weathermaster store online(located in Baltimore) but have not visited it yet. Do they make good windows? Does schuco sell to the consumer? Any recommendations.

Diy and good at it.

Dave:

Simonton will custom make their new construction window for a small up charge over the standard sizes. If you are on a budget the ProFinish contractor is a decent window but be sure to upgrade the screen frame to extruded, add low-e/argon and possibly Super Spacer.

If you can spend a little more look into the Reflections 5500 and add a nailing fin, the only upgrade you may consider would be the spacer again to Super Spacer.

You can go to the Simonton web site www.simonton.com where a distributor locator can be found.

You may want to keep that chainsaw in the garage when installing your new windows.
