 American Craftsman

I just called Home Depot about their vinyl replacement window brands, and they told me that they carry American Craftsman. Has anyone heard of this Co., and is buying windows from Places like Home Depot and Lowes a good idea?

Last week I got a quote from a local vinyl window replacement company, I need 12 windows including a large picture window. The company sells Amerimax and Simonton replacement windows. they quoted me $6,000 for Amerimax replacement vinyl windows. I did some Internet reasearch and I believe the Amerimax are of mid quality which is fine for my home, however I visited lowes and homedepot, Lowes sells a thermastar brand which is made by a company that pella window bought out im not sure about the quality but they didnt have the features the amerimax has. the price was reasonable at around $2,000 for all windows. But sometimes you pay for what you get. I visited home-depot to get a quote from them on their american craftsman windows. These windows had all the features I was looking for plus thicker frames at 3 and 1/4 inch and thicker glass panes at 7/8 inch plus low E and argon so im going to investigate these a little further. I've also been doing some seaching, American craftsman is made by silverline out of NJ. I had a local contractor come to the house and he gave me a price of $650 per window installed for a brand that they have made for them. Nice window very solid better than the American craftsman window, but not worth $650. I did some more searching and found the company that I think is making the windows for them, its a company called Gorell out ot PA. Check out their site WWW.gorell.com they're great windows. Not sure of their cost though, sent them an E-Mail asking about buying direct so I don't have to deal with another pushy salesman.

Well after a couple months of researching Im going with the american craftsman home depot brand made by silverline and will be installing these myself. I ordered 12 windows with the low e and argon filled. Though may not totally be necessary I also had them foam filled. All for around 2,300. The company has been making windows since 1947 and I think theyll be fine for my home we live in missouri so the climate isnt too harsh. I will keep you posted on the progress. Jon.

I've installed 1000's of these windows made by Silverline. In the window world they are a 5 on a scale of 1-10. Installation is very important, and if done properly you'll be happy. Make sure it's the 8500 series, their other windows below that series are not too dependable. They also make one other series that's a good window it's in the 9000# series and can be woodgrained on the inside. Thermastar at Lowes is a grade or two below the American Craftsman, if I were Pella I wouldn't put my name on it.

Yes,they are the 8500 series,and thanks for your reply. For the price I thought maybe they would be about a mid-grade window maybe lower.I almost went with the thermastar but I liked the silverlines a little better. thanks for your advice the windows should be in sometime this week. Though I have never installed replacement windows, I have installed new construction. Any pointers would be appreciated. thanks for your help. Jon.

I have installed 11 American Craftsman replaement windows in my parents home. They
have more than 1 line. I picked their 4500 series line, which is one of their top lines. I got low e with argon gas and simulated divided glass. The grillwork for simulated panes is between the glass panes making them easy to clean the windows. I also ordered the window with full screens instead of the half screen. The cost for thier better type vinyl window (better type has welded corners vs being fasten mechanically) with argon gas, simulated divided glass pane, with full screen is about 230.00 for a window 31" wide by 64" tall if I recall correctly. You can install one yourself, just reading the directions and then the 2nd one would be even easier to install. Key is measuring for window replacement carefully. I have no complaints with thier performance.

I am considering installing American Craftsman replacement windows from HomeDepot myself. According to their installation instructions, I could easily do the job from inside my house. I currently have storm windows attached to the "external stops" of my old windows. I am assuming that I will need to remove the storm windows and replace the "stops". Therefore, would it be easier to do the job from the outside? What is the best way to replace my double-hung windows with storm windows? Thanks.

My windows also have the aluminum storm attached to the outside stops. Yes you will have to remove these first,you could possibly leave them in but you wouldnt want to. After I removed these I removed my old windows which was easy. I went ahead and installed them from the inside, I left the outside stops on because of the flashing covering them. I just put the screws back in the stops to fill the holes where the storm window was.The windows come with an angled vinyl trim youll want to install on the sill up next to the inside of the stops, then I added some insulation on the sill and caulk the inside edge of the sill and dropped the window in from the inside. shimmed up where the 4 mounting screws are at the sash, made sure everything was square and tightened them down a little at a time. I installed the first window in about 2 hours the next was about 45 minutes, afterwards I went back outside and put a bead of caulk around the perimeter of the window. It is a peice of cake. Already this morning noticed the bathroom was not as cold as it usually is so far so good only 10 more windows to go. good luck..

Are the American Craftsman 8500 much better than the 4000 series? My home is in Virginia, and I am in Hawaii, so I'm trying to do some research. They need to be replaced, so I'm going into this BLIND. Dave

Yes the 8500 is quite superior. Silverline who makes the American Craftsman catches a lot of flack in this business because of cheap windows. I am a dealer of their windows and well not purchase anything other than the 8500 or above.

I installed 18 American Craftsman windows into my house last summer and 20 into another house I own this year. They are the mid model that I purchased at home depot. They are a decent vinyl replacement window, and windows are easy to insall, but you should definately have someone show u how to do it first. I had a friend show me how, and it was a HUGE help. Then as I installed the windows, it started taking less time to do. First 1 I did myself took 2 hrs, but by the end, I had it down to about 30-40 minutes...fully installed w/the insulation, caulking & trim back in place.

The bottom line Amer Craft. window @ home depot is JUNK!!! Don't bother w/ it unless its a rental property u r putting it into. The other two models are good. I did alot of research on em before I decided what brand and model to purchase. There are better lines then Amer. Craftsman, but the top 2 are good enough. They are a bit noisey though, regarding filtering out the exterior sounds.....there is a full report on the mid level window in comsumer reports.

Most important, be sure to install them properly!! Old houses will take much more work as nothing is ever quite square in them. Dont take shortcuts...insulate the pockets and sides, tops and bottoms of the window...caulk both sides properly. Shortcuts wont save u money come time regarding a heating bill. Finally, make sure someone shows u how to do at least 1 window first...it'll save u lots. Overall they are then quite easy to do yourself...

You want to get Certainteed Windows called Brym Mahr II, they were recommended by Consumer Report and 3 years ago the cost was about $190 a window, they come in custom sizes too.

go for the 2000. price silverline makes a great window which is about 100.00 wholesale and i have installed over several hundred of these windows and they are fine if installed correctly. that is caulking the blind stop when you install and caulking on the inside before you replace the window stop on the inside of the home. usually people get ehat they pay for but many times we pay more. especially if you are a woman like me who has learned over time to do the research.J christianson wrote:

Actually the outside storm window can be removed from the external stop. It is usually screwed on and perhaps calked on. Be sure to remove all the external storm windows and screens from the inside before you try to install the new windows because the new opening will be smaller once you put in the replacement window. I did all the instalation from the inside without any difficulty. You can go to their website and watch a video. I only had to go on the outside so I could add some caulking between the new window and the outside stop.I did the whole thing in less then an hour not having done one before. Now that I know how to I will be able to do them in about 45 minutes depending on how heavy the window is.

Hi - we bought a cottage in which the former owner had replaced windows and patio doors with American Craftsman, and I need to warn you about their poor quality. In the double or single hung windows, the spring balances are very weak and break easily, so the window will not stay open and the balance gets in the way. The patio doors leak air, water, and sound profusely - the joint between the operable and fixed units is wide open because the vinyl flexes so much. The sill fills with water when it rains, flooding into the interior. The screen door wheels are fragile and the frame is thin and flimsy, bending easily and beyond repair. Please avoid buying these, and I would further advise against any vinyl windows, since vinyl expands and contracts considerably. Better material is fiberglass since its thermal expansion rate is closer to glass. Look into Marvin's Integrity series, for example, as a good moderate priced window.

I would like some feedback on the 8500 series double-hung from American Craftsman. I understand the lower models are well below average quality, but is the 8500 series above average ? These are energy-star rated windows, so I figure they must be at least a 7 on a 1-10 scale. Right ??

I recently received a quote for installing Amerimax. One problem I'm having is that the trims of the windows are too thick. Visually not very pleasing. You say Amerimax is mid-grade windows. Could you recommend about the same grade or higher windows with thinner trims which are more appealing to eyes? I hate looking at the house with thick window trims around it. Any comments would be greatly appreciate it.

My sister had all of her windows replaced about four years ago with American Craftsman windows. Home Depot did the installation. Now I notice that three of her windows have moisture between the panes. Could the installers/installation process somehow have contibuted to the early failure of these windows?

A/C is a mid range vinyl window that if installed properly well serve you well, but only the 8500 series. As turk pointed out in an earlier post the rest of them are junk and lowes pella vinyl isn't much ahead of them. Certainteed is a better product than the 8500 A/C and the Softlite is not an eleven but very comparable to Softlite. If I had to rate Softlite it would be close to a seven on a scale from 1-10. Silverline who makes the A/C is very good about service. Just get the proper discription to HD and you'll have no trouble getting new sashes. In the industry, I think Silverline has a little higher seal failure rate, but their good about replacement.

Why do you consider the thermastar by pella so low in quality? What are the issues with this window. I have checked out both windows (the American craftsman @ Home Depot and the thermastar @ lowes)and not having a train eye for this stuff, and relying on the pamplets in the stores, I dont see that much difference.

American Craftsman vinyl replacement windows.
We have just had all the windows in our house replaced with the Am Craftsman 1200 series (I understand that it is the lowest priced, etc. in their line). At any rate, the windows are double hung but have no grilles. Help---is there any way that we can add grilles to these windows. Does my husband need to make them? Can we buy some wood ones somewhere and adjust their size?
I understood that the windows would have grilles with them, but they did not.

With or with out storm windows I believe the American Craftsman window should be installed from the inside after removing the window moldings and sliders. I can’t imagine installing these from the outside. I plan to install the same window leaving my storm windows in place. That way I can replace the window with out worrying about the weather.

Check your local zoning regs. Tempered glass should be used if the window is close to the floor, making it easy for some one to fall though. If the window is high enough from the floow it may not be necessary to use tempered glass.

I had a quote from Airtite Windows (latest greatest) which was outrageous. 8 windows for $8000. I have very large slider windows currently. I went to Home Depot and talked to the dude in the window/door department. He was retired from home construction. He told me that the only thing that matters in windows is the U-Rating of the glass. If you get a good U-Rating (lower is better, i.e. (.32) or less), the rest of the window (frame, etc) means nothing. I bought 8 American Craftsman windows for under $2000 and am thrilled with them. They are very well constructed and look fantastic.

American Craftsman & Gorell windows are not even in the same leage, As you might have already figured, you will pay a little more now and end enjoy your windows forever. If you purchace builder grade windows and have high expectations you will probably be let down. If you have access refer to consumer reports to see American Craftmans Score! Though you will probably not find and of the better windows in consumer reports because one of the requirements of being in their test case is that it has to be availible direct to the public, Where all trully high quailty manufatures only want their products in the hands of trained dealers. Some of the best replacement windows on the market are Great Lakes Uniframe series, Schuco, and Gorell 5300 series.

I think what JD is saying is ... Consumer Reports only rates products available for retail purchase by a homeowner. The best windows are typically quality controlled and thus sold through exclusive dealerships including installation to protect the reputation and product name. The best products in the world are only as good as their installation. That's probably why it's called "Consumer Reports" instead of "The Best Products". It's a publication... they wish to reach the public and sell magazines.

Which one would anybody recommend and why. the salesmen have me a little confused with different benefits...I just want a window that keeps out the heat in the summer and stops all the warmth escaping in the winter...HELP

I WOULD NOT EVER BUY THESE WINDOWS AGAIN! (American Craftsman). I bought the 8500 series and the fit and finish is shoddy at best, there was silicon all over the windows and there were globs of silicon around the edges. I custom ordered these windows from Home Depot and have advised HD of the quality that they are putting their name behind. As far as I am concerned, HD would be best suited to terminate the relationship between them and AC. I paid 260 + per window and spec'd LowE, Argon and Foam Filled, now I wonder if it really is foam filled, how will I ever know. Once again, STAY AWAY FROM AMERICAN CRAFTSMAN WINDOWS.

Is anyone familiar with Home Depot vinyl replacement windows? The window sample they showed me was supposedly Ultramaxx windows. However, another contractor told me that there is no way Home Depot sells Ultramaxx. He said that Ultramaxx is made by Alside and that Alside does not sell to Home Depot, they only sell to private contractors. Does anyone know if this is true?
Also, has anyone purchased a bay window in the northern new jersey area? Please give me your reviews. I am looking to have a bay window put in but want the best bang for my bucks.

pure junk. go to lowes and buy the reliabuilt windows not the thermastar by pella. If you live in columbus ohio go to the Dublin store and I will install them.
Heres another tip call window world in your area. www.windowworld.com and give them a chance. Around $300 installed for an excellent window. Just be sure to get the right installation crew where ever you buy.
IF YOU DOUBT THEIR QUALITY OF INSTALLATION GO SEE ONE OF THEIR JOBS!!
I have never refused to let a customer come to one of my installations and see my work.
Anytime you cut out a high pressure salesman you save 20% or more and you won't get lied to. Most sales people have no idea what they are talking about other than specs learned during training and have never been to an installation.
BUYER BEWARE THE BEST WINDOW IS THE WORST IF NOT INSTALLED PROPERLY!!!!

As far as I know Home Depot is selling a window that is private labeled for them by Simonton. In fact, Home Depot and Sears are pretty much identical windows and both are waaay overpriced. Simonton makes a good high mid-range window that offers a good value IF purchased through a Simonton direct dealer. Now, please be aware that there are other manufacturers out there that might have better windows for less money and there are lots of manufacturers with lesser windows for more money. Shopping is imperative to find the best value on the best window for you and your wallet. And usually, shopping at a big box store is not the thing to do.

While I'll disagree with handyman81976's rant about all sales people being disreputable, he is correct about the need for proper installation. As so many of the pros will say, a poor installation makes a great window bad and a great installation makes a poor window good.

Alside in most of the country does not sell to HD, it's not because they don't want to, Simonton just beat them to it. Alside's Ultra Max has a few problems that were fixed by their Shefield series. Better water and air test. But Alside well sell windows to anybody, you can probably buy them yourself at most Alsides centers.

With sights on Home Depot's American Craftsman 8500 series for its qualities at middle of the road pricing, I've about decided to proceed with doing one myself, just to see how difficult. My goal is good quality and ease of installation.

Your "thousands of windws" experience, maybe you can tell me is this HD product as good as I'm going to get for the middle pricing ($175 per)?

I am in Michigan and am considering installing Home Depot's American Craftsman 8700 series sliders. Currently I have aluminum sliders (I think from original home construction). I have a brick exterior right up to the windows. Interior is plaster up to the window tops, and sides with marbel sills.


1) Any opinions on the American Craftsman 8700 series?

2) I am concerned about the difficulty of removing the old aluminum windows since there are no visible screws. I think they must have an aluminum flange connected to studs buried in the wall. Some sales peole say that once the aluminum frame has been cut it should be easy to pry the frames out. Opinions?

3) Will I need any alumium exterior trim, ot interior molding to hide gaps around the window frame???

 Replacement installation

All the installation instructions I've read have me removing the inside stop. Then placing the new window in against the outside (blind stop). Then replacing the inside stop. Additionally, according to the measurement instructions, I measure between the two jams for the width. However, with the homes in my neighborhood, the inside and blind stops are attached to the jams and then covered (except for a decorative edge) by brick moulding on the outside and casing on the inside. I hope I've described that well. I've looked at how a company replaced my neighbor's windows. It looks like they made the windows only as wide as the distance between the inside edge of the stops on each side (not all the way to the jams). It seems that I lose a little more window area that way, and I don't have a great edge for either support or sealing with caulk. Any advice?

reliabilt 5500 vs reliabilt 7000. Any thoughts on these two Reliabilt windows? Both seem better quality than HD american craftman and the WENCO vinyl replacemeny at Menards

I had an eye-opening experience with American Craftsman from Home Depot. Broken glass. You replace the entire slider on a double-hung. Guess what you do to replace the broken top pane of a single hung ... You got it -replace the entire friggin window. Whatever window you buy, ask that question. BB guns are cheap and readily available.

The Home Depot does not install American Craftsmen windows. The Home Depot has its own line of Premium replacement windows called Rennovations. They are manufactured exclusively for The Home Depot on an installed basis only. The American craftsmen line is offered as an upper-tier, builders grade replacement window for contractors and do-it yourselfers. The Home Depot is now installing Andersen wood windows in many markets for the consumers that want a full-frame window with furniture grade interior and vinyl clad exterior.

Stops will need to be removed. Most replacement windows are installed from the interior for easier installation. (New Construction are typically installed fron the exterior of the house). As with any window, be certain that any "homeowner" installation does not void the warranty.

I want to replace some of my windows in my home. I want to know what are the smallest to know what are the smallest dimensions you can buy in a double hung window. The width is 29" and the length is 26". Thank you for your help in this matter. I have already replace on of my sliders with one of your replacement windows.

Home Depot used to install the American Craftsman window. This was when each store was doing their own installed sales. HD has now started their own National Installation Division which oversees the work done around the country. When they set this up they made a deal with Simonton for they're window. Simonton makes the window they sell and call Renovations. It's very similar to the Reflections line sold by Simonton. So when they set the new program in place. They also changed the window being sold for the installed sales. It was a very good step on HD's part. They were having to many issues in certain areas of the Nation with their installed window sales.
