BEST BRAND OF VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

Author: mike v (---.hospital.uic.edu)

There are numerous replacement window companies. Any recommendations, I mean there is Pella, Andersen, American Craftsman. Who's the best?

That's kind of a tough question because of varying needs. It's hard to judge vinyl to wood if you're looking at an installtion where wood seems the obvious choice {a log home, for example} Saying a vinyl window is "best" for that situation would be wrong aesthetically. {Pella and Anderson would be no where near the top of my list.}

But, if my choice is limited to only one window out of the many, I'd have to go with the Schuco window for energy efficiency, quality workmanship, state of the art materials and great features.

cHAMPION wINDOWS ARE BUY FAR THE BEST REPLACEMENT WINDOW OUT THERE. THERE IS NOT ANOTHER WINDOW COMPANY THAT HAS EARNED THE GOOD HOUSEKEEPING SEAL OF APPROVAL. OR HAS THE THIRD PARTY ENDORESMENTS THAT CHAMPION OFFERS

That's a bunch of crap. Champion is midrange at best and Schuco has earned the Good Housekeeping Seal... unlike Champion who posted the seal for their sunrooms and snuck their windows in next to it. After a lawsuit they were allowed to use the seal after paying a ton of money. Look it up.

What do you think of Certainteed's Bryn Mawr II window? We got an estimate to replace 19 windows for $10,500, window seems to be a very nice window.

Re: BEST BRAND OF VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

Author: Window4U (---.client.insightBB.com)
Date:

Bryn Mahr II is a good window, and I've had excellent results. My only complaint is the roll formed screens tend to bow because of screen cloth tension and not seal against the sill on windows more than about 30 inches wide. If they would switch to extruded screen frames, I would give a higher recommendation.
I would suggest you check out Schuco corona 4000's if you get a chance. I'm a dealer in Illinois. I carry more than 15 brands including Certainteed, but my Schuco window is head and shoulders above any of the other windows, and it is in the price range you have been quoted.

 Wow W4U, you carry >15 lines ???

Author: wvuguy (---.cinci.rr.com)
Date:

Not that it's any of my business, but I can't help but wonder WHY you'd need to carry THAT many lines.

Now, I agree it's just good business to provide an "economy-value-premium" choice for your customers. And, I appreciate the fact that you may have suppliers that specifically furnish aluminum, fiberglass, vinyl, or wood windows (or possibly some combination of them). It also occurs to me that you may be a provider of diversified home-improvement services like decks, siding and doors.....which would obviously entail other manufacturers altogether.

To that end, I guess I'm just interested in learning more about a successful window replacement/home improvement business.....even though I'm not in your geographical area. For example, we already know you consider Schuco perhaps THE "premium" product in the replacement window business. What other premium lines, if any, do you carry ?? And, what lines would you categorize as your "value" and "economy" lines, and why ??

I think readers around here (like me) would benefit from perspective of this type.....of course, if you're willing to do so from a time and effort standpoint, and if "naming names" doesn't create any ethical issues for you.

Re: Wow W4U, you carry >15 lines ???

Author: Window4U {IL} (---.client.insightBB.com)

You are right in part of your post as to why I carry so many brands. My company is not only a large window company, but has a remodeling side to it as well. We are constantly matching up not only brands of windows to existing windows for room additions and remodels, but also designing special window configurations to make our projects interesting and as beautiful as possible. Many brands have a certain feature, color, or glass options that interests me and I carry those brands for those times where they come in handy on projects. For example, I have done a couple of room additions where I have taken a pattern off of beveled or leaded glass from the existing house windows, and then had one of these companies custom bevel the glass in the new windows to match the pattern. Not very many vinyl window companies will do this, and I want this capability.
I am also in the commercial window market {Traco dealer} and keep a couple lines of commercial aluminum and vinyl windows available also for that.
As far as my "economy lines", I do not sell the bottom of the line windows in any companies line. I will only sell the upper line windows and use tough negotiating and volume leverage to get to the price points I need to be competitive with other company's low end bids. I've been in the business too long to put in low end windows. It just doesn't pay.
"The sting of poor quality is felt long after the victory of low price is forgotten"

A couple windows I consider on the premium side are Schuco{of course}, Alside's Sheffield, Certainteed Bryn Mahr II {if the screens aren't bowed}, the Gorell 5300, Winstrom and the Quantum II. This is by no means a complete list, as there are many fine brands.

Hi i am a window and door contractor. I i had to choose between those 2 windows i would go with Simonton over Viplex anytime.

However i would still shop around because you can get a better price or a competitive window at about 500 or more each. Unless you have monster windows your project should be a little bit above 5k.

And take it from someone in the trade never show your quote to anyone pricing you for windows. Hope this helps

Can anyone tell me about Silver Line 8500 Double Hung Replacement window? Is this a quality product or should I keep looking. I am told it is comparable to the Bryn Mahr.

Re: BEST BRAND OF VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

PLEASE keep looking. Silverline is a lower quality window. There are much better windows out there to choose from for probably what you would spend on Silverline. If you are going to spend the money anyway, then spend it on something of quality.

A couple of decent brands in that price range are Certainteed, Gorell, Schuco 2000, Reynolds, Atrium, Simonton, Great Lakes, Alside, and there are many more. `A lot depends on where you are. In certain parts of the country, regional brands can dominate areas and not even be known elsewhere, so you may have some other fine brands near you. Good luck.

Nobody mentioned anything about Pella ThermaStar replacement windows. I've been looking at them lately - do they not compete with the other names mentioned? I always think of resale on the house and being able to put Pella windows on the listing sheet has some value over putting Joe Blow windows.

Re: BEST BRAND OF VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

Personally, I don't care for the Thermastar window at all and it has just about the worst warranty I have ever read. I counted over 102 conditional exclusions to coverage. Pella severly damaged their reputation with the Pella Pro-line that they sold in Home Depot until they were terminated for too many product failures. Instead of learning from the disaster, they just made another low quality window for sale in Lowes instead, Thermastar... only this time they virtually eliminated their liabilty. You might want to reconsider because at this rate, Pella windows will potentially hurt your resale instead of help it.

Apparently, you are a Pella person and didn't care for my post. I have read the Schuco Warranty many times... have you? It contains about 15 exclusions:

"The Schuco limited warranty is not applicable to normal wear and tear or to any damage caused by improper installation, improper cleaning, accident, fire, flood, acts of God, explosion, misuse, abuse, vandalism, riots, civil disorder, pollution or other external forces."

vs. Pella's Thermastar Warranty with over 100 conditional exclusions to coverage. Way too many to type.

Any questions?.. or would you just prefer to keep posting unsubstantiated claims for the sake of argument.

Re: BEST BRAND OF VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

Author: P S (---.buckeye-express.com)

I can speak from experience, I have lots of experience and I paid dearly for it. First my house had Pella windows and doors. They leaked and warped. All that money for that precious name of Pella and it did no good. Because the warranty expired 5 years after they were installed, the man who sold them to me laughed when I requested he "fix" the leaks. He told me "You've got to be kidding." Lesson learned: Do not buy Pella.

First we replaced the sliding patio door with an Andersen Window Frenchwood Gliding Patio Door. Cost was over $2,000 with installation. The exterior had cladding on it in Terratone to prevent any weather damage. That was an "extra" we paid for. Two years after installation the exterior cladding delaminated and began to pull away from the door. The company replaced the doors. UNFORTUNATELY, THE WARRANTY DOES NOT INCLUDE SOMEONE ELSE TO STAIN AND INSTALL THE DOORS. In order to match the existing woodwork, the staining is a 5-step process followed by 3 coats of polyurethane. NOT CHEAP TO BUY THIS STUFF, AND THE BRUSHES, TACK CLOTH, ETC. Two years after installation, the exterior cladding on the doors AGAIN began to pull away. Andersen told us the first time we had nothing to worry about that less than 1% of all doors sold ever have this problem. But here we are with the same problem again on the NEW doors sent to replace the first set of doors. Not quite 3 years after the SECOND set was installed, we are AGAIN faced with a delamination problem where the cladding has pulled away from the wooden door. Mind you there has been no damage, extreme conditions, nothing. The best Andersen Windows can tell us is they will send us a form to fill out and then they'll decide what to do. The problem is in their adhesive. Sorry, but there's nothing else they can do for us. So here it is, replacing the doors 3 times since initial installation and each and every time the cost to stain and polyurethane the door is at OUR COST, OUT OF OUR POCKET. And it's also our cost of $10.00 each time to have the old doors hauled away as we live in the city and it costs extra to have large items picked up by the trash collector. In short DO NOT BUY ANDERSEN WINDOWS & DOORS. Consider buying Marvin instead. We are.

Glad you were forwarned about the Silverline windows 8500 series. We had a horrible experience with damaged products let alone the extremely poor quality of the windows. Today we put in the last two windows after ordering them two months ago (long discouraging story to further keep you away from Silverline) only to find glue gunked up all over the window and the locking mechanism is not flush and so catches the top window when closing.

As for American Craftsman trying to correct any of the problems, I have only received lip service and blaming others.

Extremely dissatisfied customer.

I think you meant Polybau. POLYBAU Windows are manufactured in Northern California and Austria. Although they are seperate entities now, the American operation was founded by the Austrians, and both companies use REHAU vinyl. REHAU is a world-wide operation based in Germany that makes over 40,000 products.

Polybau windows are high-quality windows that have all the desired features mentioned on this site - even sightlines, warm-edge technology (super-spacer) multiple chambers, triple weatherstrip, engineered drainage system, double strength glass standard, just to name a few. Additionally, they gave a very broad selection of products from which to choose. Dealers are located throughout California and Alaska.

Call 877-polybau for more information

Can someone recommend both:

installers/contractors for window replacement in SoCal?

brands that are appropriate for SoCal?

I have gotten bids for replacement (retrofit) and tear-out (stucco-bust)
that range widely from $500/window
to $1000 / window. I have an assortment of
large and small windows and the labor seems to dominate.

I have heard recommendations for Simonton, and also got a bid from Pella, which I thought was a good brand until reading this stream...

I'm in Washington, DC. I've been looking at replacement windows for over a year now. I've gotten bids for as much as $35,000.00 to $8800.00 for the same job...22 DH windows, and 7 sliders for basement replacements. This is for a 75y/o all-brick, Center Hall Colonial. As I recall, the high bids came from Sears, Pella, and another local out-fit.

I am now considering a company called WeatherMaster (Baltimore, MD) who sells a Napco/GreatLakes window they call Insulator 3400--it's stuffed with foam. They are bidding about $10,000.00 for this window.

The other company is another Baltimore company called A U.S. Window Corp. They are selling a U.S. Vinly Corp window. Their bid is about $8,800.00

Can anyone tell me about these two companies, or the window or MFR they represent? I'm very confused over the range in price. The windows all seem to be acceptable. The only window I didn't like was the Sears window which seemed ugly.

Please advise
thanks
ej

Hey Cheryl, Got any scoop on Anlin vs. Polybau? I've got quotes on both for 19 windows including some big ones and a slider (door). Anlin's a few hundred $ cheaper with a couple of nice features: tilt-in for cleaning on single hung and partial open lock for ventilation. Trying to make the best decision. Your feedback appreciated.

Re: BEST BRAND OF VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

Author: Cheryl (---.snvacaid.covad.net)
Date:

One of the biggest differences between the two is the glazing system. Polybau uses Super-Spacer, a true warm edge system with superior long-range durability and performance. Super-Spacer is a structural foam with no metal to conduct heat and cold. Anlin uses Swiggle-Seal, also a warm-edge product, but tests show that it does not perform as well as Super-Spacer.

Polybau's hung windows - both single hung and double hung also tilt-out for cleaning. In addition Polybau Windows have triple weatherstripping. Both companies use double strength glass as a minimum.

Both Polybau and Anlin make fine products.

Hope this helps

You didn't get a "super duper" bargain, but you absolutely didn't get gouged either, especially if you are anywhere near a city where costs to do business are always higher.
My advice is to enjoy your new windows and feel good about your purchase, as they are a real good solid brand.
You could easily have paid much more for a lot less window.
I've had real good luck with them, and no service calls on any order in the 2 1/2 years since I have been carrying them.

I can tell you from experience
Traco windows are garbage.
The company tells you all their guarantees and it is all talk. I have had an issue with these people for 3 years. My windows buzz like the neighbor is using his weed eater when the wind blows. Their service man has been out 5 times. They tell me it is an installation problem My contractor tells me Traco told him it is a manufacturing problem. We all met together and the warranty rep for Traco said it was their problem. The regional manager called me the next day and said it was an installation problem. Mickey Mouse does not talk to Donald Duck at Traco.. Being this has been a 3 year fight I have recorded all conversations. Someday they will realize they have been caught. You can NOT get any kind of paper work from Traco regarding repairs made at your home. So when it comes down to it is your word against their. If you have made the mistake of buying theirs product make sure all calls are recorded and use you cell phone to prove you have called Mickey or Donald The windows are advertised as being in the statue of liberty. I just chalk that up to politics. Traco windows are JUNK

The dealer was a little cocky, he told me he would sell it to me for less than 700 per window when i sit down with him and make the deal. Can you please email me back ASAP.

Schuco is a higher priced window, and is definitley worth a little more if you want the best there is. Try to put the price into perspective....Any good wood clad window would definitely cost you more than the price Schuco is giving you, and you wouldn't be getting as much.
The Simonton Reflections 5500 is a good mid range window that functionally would serve your needs, and many people use them and are thrilled with them. There are definitely a lot worse windows out there.
You have seen the difference in quality, fit & finish, and energy efficiency for yourself. The rest is up to you on whether you want extreme quality or mid range price. Good luck to you whichever way you go.

In my personal experiance I used to like certainteed untail they started to fail like dominos

I have certainteed windows I had 14 installed so within 2 years, 5 have failed ( the labor warranty is only 5 years after that I must pay to have the CRAP lifetime warranty fixed)
DO NOT DO WHAT I DID AND PICK CERTAINTEED the only thing CERTAIN is getting hosed!!!! I live in so cal
you might check out ANLIN they have 10 year labor

the internal seal between the glass is leaking, causing fogging, or mildew type growth inside.
Certainteed comes out to replace the glass on the windows ( takes the about 2 months to finaly get out here after problem is reported. ) The windows only have 5 year warranty on labor, so if windows continue to go bad like this the install cost on "lifetime warranty " will eventually exceed new windows for the new windows.
I am also looking for others who have had simular problems with certainteed windows , as I wish to go class action on certainteed, because I feel this is a manufacturing defect from the begining that should not have a limit.

I am now in the process of getting my Champion windows installed and I have to admit ever since a couple of days after I wrote the down payment check I have been questioning my decision.

-I have had to call them every time to make sure they are on track with my order.
-They started 4 days later than expected and it is taking twice as long to get done.
-The salesman misrepresented the product a few times to us. ...
-We were told that we would not have to cut into the siding and they have
-We were told they were EXTREMELY safe against anyone who would break into our house and we have found that to be WRONG. When the window is open and lock in the double lock feature that allows the window to open a few inches it is easy for someone to just life the inside widow out and come on in. Now we were told that feature is just to keep children from jumping out of the window, but what is to keep a child from just pushing down the lock and opening the window all the way?

Now half of my house is done and I feel worse off than I was before because atleast my old windows could be broken into. We paid twice as much as the other quotes we received and feel we received horrible service and product.

Melody, where was your order done? I am in Chattanooga and just had two windows put in. It took them 8 weeks to get the windows and another week later to have them installed. I had to call looking for them three hours after their appointment time. They did though send someone out late in the day to get them installed. I was also told they would not need to cut back the vinyl siding, but of course it had to be to have the exterior look right. They put vinyl wrapped 1x3's around them which made for a nice finished look. I do like mine but security isn't an issue for me.

We are trying to decide between two brands of Windows to replace our existing ones. We have 10 double hungs, 4 casements with 2 stationary windows, and 1 picture window that we are replacing. We are considering the Schuco 2000 for all except 2 double hungs, which we would use the Schuco 4000 at $9,000; all but one would be dark oak grain on the inside. The other choice we are considering is Simonton 5500 for all windows again getting the woodgrain for $9,960. Both quotes include the windows, installation, and aluminum coil wrapping. I've also heard that Gilkey and Wellington are good ones. Would we be wise to get a quote from each of them?

4 quotes for replacement windows.

26 Great Lakes Plygem Premier double hung with all the bells and whistles, 23k.

26 Simonton Prism Double hung with all the bells and whistles 12,5k.

26 Pella casements 34k.

26 Reynolds Series 5000 Double hung 9k.

What am I missing here? All come with the Energy Star logo and have Low-e argon double pane. I live in south central KS and would like some guidance. Thanks!

You are missing details. Details of installation, details of necessary work for same, details of options and finish. The energy star in it's use for windows was once a respected icon. These days, it's a bare minimum as is double-pane, low-E, Argon.

Not to be rude but the real answer to all of your questions is IT'S THE INSTALLATION STUPID. All sales people lie or are bias toward their favorite company or employer.
Price is what ever the market will bear or whoever does'nt shop and signs the dotted line is a fool.
The highest quality product is junk if the installation is botched.
Always go out and check refferences and go see a job or two that has been done by whoever you choose.
Window world has a very good product but sometimes lacks on the installation expierence. So does champion suffer the same problems. So does Sears and so on. If you see someones work you like request that specific installation crew and wait even if it takes longer for the job to begin.
As far as price its a game. I have installed identical windows for several different companies for 250,350,600,1000 dollars for the exact same window ,same brand even.
ANYOE WHO SIGNS A CONTRACT BECAUSE THE SALESMAN WAS SO NICE OR GAVE ME A GREAT DEAL IF I JUST SIGN RIGHT NOW OR TODAY DESERVES WHAT THEY GET. WHICH IS RIPPED OFF!!!
I will install any window professionally and proudly with only quality in mind my name is on the installation. It is a form of art and creation and nothing makes me more proud than to drive around ohio and say I did that house to my friends and family.
Just remember THE BEST WINDOW IS THE THE ONE THAT IS INSTALLED PROFESSIONALLY.
AS FOR PRICE BUYER BEWARE!!!!!

First off I would like to say thanks to you all for both the questions asked and the replies. After presentations by representatives of Simonton, Champion and Gorell I decided that I a tad unarmed concerning replacement windows. I read through most all of the threads, visited numerous web pages and now have learned more than I probably ever wanted to know about replacement windows. Although I may be light years away from being an expert in the subject I have become something much more dangerous in-so-far as salespeople of replacement windows are concerned - an informed consumer.

Moving right along, what I am looking for is the URL of the Champion/Good Housekeeping lawsuit that you mentioned Fenestration Expert.

Hi, I just had Appleby windows installed, 5 casements, and 1 double-hung. The Appleby salesman blew alot of smoke up my ass, but I figured, what the heck, if I can talk them down significantly, then maybe the convenience is worth it and maybe the windows are decent. So, I talked them down from $1000 per window (complete -new product, removal of old, and installation of new, capping) and ended up getting the deal done for $650 each. However, I noticed that the windows once installed DID NOT bear the name "Appleby" as was described by the salesman -who claimed that Appleby manufactures their own windows. Rather, the windows say ROTO HG04-2002 (on the casement models) So, does anybody know what's up with Appleby windows and why they used ROTO Brand windows -are ROTO windows any good??? I'm worried that the 55 year warranty won't be honored on down the road, because they'll say "These aren't Appleby windows"...Did I get ripped off?

The Schuco Suprema III Glass, 2 coats of Double LO-E, Steel Reinforced, Beautiful fusion welds, Krypton gas (Heavier than Argon) Edge Deleted glass and last but not least, the TPS Spacing system. THE BEST SPACING SYSTEM ON THE PLANET, HANDS DOWN. Not only do the Schuco windows look beautiful, the efficiency is incredible.
Yes, the Schuco's are more money, but think of it this wasy. Price buyers are twice buyers. Just look at some of the posts here with seal failures and so on. I have been selling the schuco window system now for 4 years, and they just don't fail. Their gas is nearly 100% filled, unlike most other brands that give you an average of 40 to 60 percent fill. That's like going to the deli and paying for a pound of cheese, and only getting 1/2 a pound. Fact almost 20% of my replacement window business last year was replacing replacement windows, HOMEOWNERS CONTINUALLY GET INTICED BY LOW PRICE.

I completely agree Windowman. Good Housekeeping meant far more to homemakers years back as they were reading the magazines. They offer a 2 year limited guaranty on products that now typically have 5 years to lifetime guaranties already provided. But the seal looks good. I actually have mentioned the seal in previous posts but have lost respect for it's importance due to the fact that they have recently given it to poor products.

Does anyone have any recommendations for vinyl replacement windows for a basement? I need 7 windows and live in Rockland County, NY. Started to look at Lowe's Pella Thermastars, but they've received bad reviews on this board. Shuco has received good reviews, but may be too costly for a basement. I was coming close to buying the thermastar windows until I read this thread.

I am looking to replace 21 windows in my house that was built in 1976. The windows in the house are not horrible (i.e. they are not painted shut and still work pretty well). However, I am in the process of painting the house and most all of these windows need re-glazing -- a job which results in me cracking a pane here and there while removing old putty.

I really don't want to spend large dollars as I feel certain that I will not get the money back out of the house (seems square footage and location are all that matter).

The Thermastar's (when compared to what I have) seem to work very well.

If these windows are this bad, do you have a suggestion for windows 31.5" x 65.5" for around $225 or less each that are any better?

Input would be greatly appreciated -- I dont want to make a mistake here.

window for installation (by someone, who does

The Xact quote was $3110 for low-e w/Argon and grids, all white. Installation was not

OK Darren... I have many years invested in this industry.... and I see both sides. Years back, listing Pella windows helped upon resale... that is changing and I am one of the ones helping to do it. Pella has abandoned the loyalty to it's own name recognition and to it's faithful followers. I despise that as a true industry professional.

Their Proline was garbage... and created with intent to sell mass quanities cheap in Home Depot stores. They hurt many consumers until HD finally threw them out of the stores. People bought it believing in the black and yellow Pella sticker thinking HD just bought sooooo many to make them so cheap. They were misled. Pella has followed this financial success (and moral disaster) with the Thermastar for sale at Lowes... Pella doesn't even make the window!!! I have counted over 100 exclusions to their warranty. Virtually and legally... there is nothing left. Don't be fooled.

We also went with Pella windows for our new home and have had nothing but trouble with them them steam over, and sweat so bad that the water runs down the wall and the company is blaming us. they say we have to much moisture in our house. So we run a dehumidfier all the time and the moisture level is seldom above 40%. it is usually around 30-35%. THEY WOULD NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS AT ALL. We are replcing all the windows in our house with a different brand. Last fall we only replaced one and we have not had any of the problems with it as we have the Pella windows. We get heavey mold on our windows especially in the winter time on the Pella windows. But not on the new windows that we have replaced. We have all the expence of new siding, windows, framing , and trim. Our hose is less then 5 years old. I would not recommend Pella windows to anyone!

We've been speaking with West Coast Vinyl Windows, which seem to service Southern California exclusively.

They use REHAU-supplied materials--to the point that it sounds like REHAU offers a turnkey manufacturing solution for vinyl window and doors. It sounded like all materials except glass--as well as manufacturing equipment--were supplied by REHAU.

Two questions for this forum:

1) Has anyone had experience with West Coast Vinyl Windows (http://www.westcoastvinylwindows.com/)?

2) Does their use of the REHAU design mean that their quality is comparable with other REHAU-based manufacturers like POLYBAU?

Thanks!

I've read a few of your posting in different topic.

Can you tell me which is a better brand POLYBAU or Simonton? I'm in South San Francisco, CA and am interested in low-noise (airplanes) and weather (cool area with occasional fog). Low-E, SunClean, Superspacer and level 8 (of material in the frame, I forgot what it's called) rather than level 4 (a lot of brands I've looked at have) seem to be of interest to me as well. I'm in a big rush and a dealer said Simonton can be delivered in 10-days. Although if POLYBAU is a better buy, I guess I can wait an additional 4-5 days.

My husband wants the job ordered and done with (order pending at LOWEs 5-Pella & 4-Milgard) and I'm trying to convince him to let me do a little more research. He's installing them himself with a friend.

In response to D Banks.... while West Coast Windows is a good company, VERY FEW of their products are REHAU designs or extrusions. Ask them specifically about the products that are of interest to you. Polybau, on the other hand, currently uses exclusively REHAU extrusions for their window products. Our product lines are not the same.

Should I ask them to quote Shuco and others?

Hello:
I live in NJ and am considering "Belmont" replacement windows made by the Alliance Window Systems.
According to their brochure, they use "warm edge technology, 2 layers of weather stripping, heavy walled (0.065) PVC framing,
3/4" insulating glass, fusion welded frame/sash, stainless steel constant force balance, dual tilt sashes, with options for Innovative LOW "E" "coated" high performance glass.
Does this sound like a good replacement window to the experts out there?
Also, would a "LOW E COATING" on the glass be as good as "LOW E ARGON" Gas?
I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.
Thanks!

Be aware that the term. "warm edge technology" only means warmer than a standard metal box spacer. The term is often used by PPG for the Intercept spacer which is more conductive than better warm edge spacers such as TPS and Super Spacer.

Many of the top performing windows have triple weatherstrips and 7/8" to 1" glass which will outperform the 3/4". The Low E coatings serve a different function than the Argon gas fill. One really doesn't replace the other. The Low E coatings reflect heat off the surface of the glass while the gas fills provide insulating value to the space between the panes. I wouldn't recommend buying a window without either as a bare minimum. Good Luck.

We are considering the milgard Classic line of windows and have two comparable quotes for ~30 windows in our home. The two companies main difference is that one uses the Flanged install and the other is Flangeless. Both salespeople believe theirs is best. Does anyone have an opinion here?

Thanks!!

Wow, I had no idea that the replacement window world was so competitive and confusing. I live in LA and everything seems more expensive here. I've received quotes on several types of windows and am trying to decide between Polybau, the Atrium 7800 series and possibly Anlin. I'm very torn. Does anyone know which is best? The cost is about the same but I think I need to hammer them some more. I've been quoted around $7400 for 10 windows (pretty big windows) and a french swinging door. Also, I like the look of my old wood windows, does anyone know which has the best "wood" look or anything about wood replacement windows in general.

Thanks

Can anyone tell me a reasonable price for window replacement in DC area? Looking at Schuco Corona 4000. I have both oversize (>101 linear inches) and "regular" (<101 linear inches). I am also looking at an InLine Slider (~6 foot). I realize that the price will probably vary according to the number of windows I am doing, but I am trying to get a feel for what a reasonable cost/window would be, regardless of number being done.

I respect your post, Simonton makes a good product. You may want to consider selling a premium product and your views may change. You can still sell the Simonton and also offer top-shelf too.

We need to replace our 4-panel bow windows (2) in the front of our house. We have replaced most of our other windows with Bryn Mawr in the past year. We have been given quotes which range from $3700 installed to $8000 installed (total for both). One quote was a Pepco brand (energy company), the other was for Simonton 5500 (the lowest quote). I don't know anything about Simonton and can't seem to get much info on their site. What would you recommend. I would like it to have a birch deck of at least 1 inch and wood clad interior if possible.

We are building a new home and are wondering if you can put Schuco windows in a new home. I have not heard of this window. Is it vinyl or wood? There are so many choices out there I am not sure whether to put in wood or vinyl. What do you think? My builder works with a brand called something like Mystic--a vinyl. Have you ever heard of it--maybe it's a regional brand. After reading about the Schuco on this website, I am interested to see if there is a dealer in my area. We live in West Michigan. By the way, how would you know so much about windows?
Thanks,

Re: BEST BRAND OF VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

Author: FenEx (---.dyn.optonline.net)

Laura

I suggest reading some more posts and more research. An R-value of 9.7 is a center-of-glass rating "only" (about the size of a quarter) at the warmest part of the window. It is not a valid measure of a window's overall performance. You may want to go to NFRC.org to find the U-factor (overall energy loss/gain)of the products you are considering and divide the number "1" by that number to give you the correct R-value for a entire window by government standards.

"R-value" is the resistance to energy (heat-flow), U-factor determines the amount lost or gained and thus the efficiency of a product.

I have pella windows in my house and I cound't be happier. I'm just glad I took the advice of a friend and stayed away from home-cheapo and lowes for my windows. It seems that pella made a bad mistake and let other companies be envolved with some of their window manufactering. We went straight through a pella dealership, not home depot or lowes, and purchased their designer series. Not only did they introduce us to their installation crew, but they also openly explained their problems with the larger companies that pella was being sold at. I keep seeing comments about bad warranties, our is 20 years on the glass, and 10 on all parts and is transferable. I did forget to ask them what the difference between their warranty and lowes was though. All in all we are very happy with our windows

Our initial quote on 11 double hung replacements from Schuco was $10,800. We signed the paper work (to think about it) and called to cancel the same evening. That was last week, this week another fellow (supposedly the VP in charge of sales) came out. His quote was $7800 half but he accepted my counter offer of $5,200 for the 11 double hungs (majority 34 * 47) and a large two light slider to replace a picture window. This is for the triple pane best model Schuco, with grids and half screens.

My questions:
Based upon what I read here $433 an opening seems like a good price - am I correct?
What do you all think of Schuco's slider?
They will do full screens for the same price, is there any advantag to the full and do 1/2's look odd from the curb? My thought was the 1/2 screen would improve our visability from the inside.

Thanks

The Schuco In-line slider is an extremely well engineered product. As for your new price... it's the lowest I have ever seen for the product... maybe too low. On average, the DH's are usually in the 650-700 range from high quality dealers. The fact that your dealer started at $900 ea. and than used the manager price-drop routine and wound up at $433... should raise some serious concerns about their ethics and obvious desperation for work. I would strongly suggest heavily researching the company with the BBB, Consumer Protection and atleast 5 referrals in your area. The full screen will give an even shaded appearance to both sashes but will block a small amount of light. Good Luck and hope everything works out.

Home depo does not do a good job in evaluating their contractors.

We've received 2 quotes, one from a company called First Choice that sells the Preservation line (made by Alside I think) for $10,000, and another from Renewal by Andersen for $17,000.

Any recommendations? Other manufacturers we should look at that are available in our area?

 Pella Windows

Author: Tim Lawson (---.com)

After reading all the bad remarks about Pella windows, I'm a bit confused. I have Pella windows in my home and they are great. I also have Pella windows in my cabin that have lasted over 35 years with no problems.
There is a reality that buying replacements from Home Depot and Lowes and having some half ass installer put them is a big problem. I spoke with my sales rep for Pella and he did warn me about the installers.
Perhaps thats why there are so many disclaimers, it's hard to stand behind a homeowner installing themselves or some young lads that sub-contracts off some contractor for the install. It's important you buy Pella windows from a sales rep that can guide you through the process.

In my opinion, Pella are the best out there. They have a wonderful history of making a high quality window. They have been around since the 1920's and working to make there product better. They have the best features including rolscreens and between the glass shades. They also care alot about there employees and customer service.

They were rated the 22 out of 100 best companies to work for from Fortune 500 magazine in 2004. They have been in the category for the last 4 years.

With my home I don't want to trust the little Ma and Pop company that may go out of business any day. I trust the company thats been around for almost 100 years and stand by thier product.

This is just my opinion based on my experience and research. It's to bad that people have to bash below the belt at Pella. Its obvious to me that the people trying to give Pella a bad name because they work for some small less successful window company. If anyone has any questions about my experience give me an email. I've been a painter for over 15 years and work with windows everyday. Pella is the best.

Tim

I don't think anyone has said all Pella products are all poor. I know for a fact that any damage done to the Pella name has come directly from the decisions of Pella. They owned the high-end quality market years ago... and sacrificed that reputation through some poor advice from their financial department. They elected to betray the cunsumer confidence level by developing some extremely low-end products and putting their well respected sticker on it. This began with the Proline which was eventually even kicked out of HomeDepot and now they continue with the Thermastar at Lowes.

When they stopped caring about their reputation and quality... so did the dealers and homeowners. It was a bad call. They went from top of the line... to a very risky middle choice at a top of the line price.

As for them being around for a long time... yeah, they were... as a blind manufacturer... not a window company. It appears to be all about money now... not quality. As for the products I recommend... the can crush the quality and performance of a Pella... on every level... and back it!

I am glad you are a happy Pella customer... but to mislead others here is a no-no. Happy Holidays.

Please pardon any spelling or gramitical errors in this message I have a degree in engineering not spelling.
I sell windows for a living and here are a few hints in purchasing your own.
1. You get what you pay for.
2. Buyer beware.
You get me 100 feet away frome a vinyl window and i can not tell you who made it. Look to the interior of the window.
Having said that understand all manufactures endevor to make a quality product it is just that some are better at it than others. Look at the quality of the framing. The quality of the welds.(some manufactures leave very sharp edges) is the vinyl virgin or recycled. If it is recycled it will yellow with time. Are the windows internally supported.(metal, fiberglass etc.) A large unsupported vinyl framed window will sag with time. Is the snap bead/glazing strip internal or external. Internal is the best. Are they fully welded or held together with screws. Does it use a nonthermal conductive spacer between the panes or a metal spacer. When you have a company come out for a bid do your research prior. Do they maintain a web site, are they listed with the bbb in your area. Are they liscesend bonded and insured and is the insurance current. Take the numbers off a copy of the insurance policy and call the company. they will tell you if it is current.
Be extreamly careful of an estimate, require a firm bid for windows and installation. This will not cover dry rot or insect damage. Is it a warranty or a guarantee. There is a difference ask any lawyer(if you can get a straight answer). Do not ignore the small regional manufactures of windows. Some of them are the finest windows out there.
When they come out for a presentation do they bring a cut out of the window and sample windows or do they just say it is a nationally recognized company with a great reputation. I don't know about you but i want to see what i am buying. any questions send me an email

This board is awesome--thanks to all the knowledgable folks who have posted here. I'd like FenEx's opinion (but welcome comments from others, too) about whether we got really gouged:

Last year, paid $500/window for 14 ThermoLine replacements (DH vinyl-clad outside but wood inside with removable wood grids). Another $1500 to paint wood, but painter broke grids (very soft pine, breaks when you look at it!). While dealing with damage, I noticed stickers that say National Vinyl Products.

I'm now seeing condensation on the glass while it's only 40 outside (gets a lot colder than that around here!) and feel drafts from where frame and glass meet (in some places gap is 1/8" wide!) as well as where 2 frames overlap.

We live in rural western Mass. so there aren't a lot of choices here... Installer had good references from customers who purchased all-wood windows (I think same brand) and works out of an established office in nearby city.

We replaced the old windows (top of the line in 1945) b/c of ice and drafts inside, but I'm not sure new windows are any better. Is there ANYTHING I can do?

Does Schuco make vinyl/wood replacements? Are they available in the NE?

So it's true that Pella has made some decisions to provide customers with a lower quality window at an affordable price. After reading some of the other posts you have posted Fenex, it's obvious to me that you are connected to Schuco windows. It's great that you are excited about the products you guys offer.

I'm not trying to mislead anyone-- quote, "to mislead others here is a no-no", I don't appreciate your claims. So in response I have a question about customer service at Schuco.

Here is what I found when diggin around for info about Schuco windows. This is what I found at the Better Business Bearu in ILL. Please respond with an explanation.

Schuco Homecraft, LP
945 Edgewood Drive, Unit #J
Wood Dale, IL 60191

This company is reportedly no longer in business. The phones have been disconnected and mail has been returned. If you have an unresolved dispute with the company, you may wish to seek legal advice or contact the following agency for assistance.

Attorney General Consumer Protection Division
100 W. Randolph St.
Chicago, IL 60601 (312)814-3580

It's always nice to find out that your window company has dipped out of town or switched names.

Sounds to me that Schuco has some serious kinks to iron out in customer service. It's been my experience that a company is judged not on the sale itself but how they treat customers after the sale.

Please don't respond with claims that I'm trying to mislead others. I only explained my experience with Pella. I do appreciate your time and response.

Schuco is a factory. It makes vinyl windows.
The company you looked up was an independent owned window, siding and roofing contractor, not Schuco-USA.
They have no more right to be slandered by you than does any manufacturer who's customers go out of business. Should Simonton be held responsible and slammed on the internet if Joe's Window and Siding goes out of business, just because old Joe happened to install Simonton windows for his customers? I don't think so.
As a dealer, I could call myself "Illinois Schuco" if I choose, but that doesn't mean Schuco owns my company or has a thing to do with my business or my finances, nor should they be held responsible if I would go out of business.
Please stop your repeat posting of this.

Unfortunatly or fortunatly I live on the west coast. My advise to you is look at what you are buying and go with one in your price range. Just because a manufacture is national does not mean it is the best. When purchasing windows do your research. with a big one being who guarantees installation. You might want to try a small local window manufacture. most times there service and product is top notch. To find a listing of every manufacture of a window go to www.nfrc.org or i should say a manufacture that has submitted a window for fenestration.

 Re: Pella Windows

I can back W4U up on his post. Your constant bashing of Schuco isn't what the board is for. I'm also offended at your comments on who installs windows for HD, Lowes and Pella. I've been in the Door & Window industry since 1974. I've done everthing from manufacturing to installation. I as the rest here form an opinion about what I like and dislike. I do agree that Pella has a great product. I feel their Patio Door is one of the best! I also know that Pella subcontracts their installations out to the same installers HD and Lowes use. I'm one of them! Not every business installing windows is a fly by night company. The problem is that when it gets busy they can't find good installers and hire anyone. Yes even Pella makes these same mistakes.
As for Schuco your looking for a local distributor not the factory. Schuco USA is the mother company for the product. Every product made in the world has some issues here and there. You can't say that your line of business never has a snag it somewhere. It's really up to the customer to pick the window they like. They have to look at their finances and how that will affect them in the long run. There are many things to look at when getting the right windows. When you start controversy about products it only confuses people looking for the right answer. I think you would feel stomped on if we came to your line of work and bashed what you do for a living. FeneX and W4U are both good knowledgable individuals in the trade. Consumers will only benefit by listening to what they say. They need to weed out the people who have nothing to offer.

Anlin is manufactured in clovis ca. It is a good quality window that should last for years and if it is within your budget a good choice. But check around your area and see if there is something better in your price range. It all depends on the company but most will hold a price for a month. With anything made with petroleum products they will not hold the price longer. A salesperson is normally on commission and it is in their best intrest to give the best price up front as it costs them money, time and a lost appointment if they have to come out again. They have a point that they can not go below, it is your job to find that point. Think of it this way. If they tell you the price is x amount will they take y. Salespeople are just like everything else there are good ones and there are slimy ones. If you don't like them ask them to leave. You are buying a window think of them as the store. If you have trouble at a given store they lose your business.

hi. for the replacement of my old windows - 11 slider + 2 patio doors and 12 picture windows, i am having a hard time to decide between these brands:

LBL 2000 with super spacer

bryn mawr II or milgard classic (equal sight line)

milgard styleline or certainteed slimline (frame depth that seems fit my house easier)

does cerntainteen window use super spacer?

thanks.

all are good quality windows. most companies offer the super spacer on request. what you need to decide is who is going to give you the best service. none of these manufactures install their own windows it is always an independent contractor.

is it worth to pay even more for Bryn MawrII instead of LBL 8000 basic double sliders?

i was told that all certainteed windows will have a price increase of 6% as of Jan 3rd and try to make dicision and order today.

it should have been. in my expierence it should have had a energy star label on the glass on delivery which was a removable label and or a white sticker with the ratings of efficency and the type of glass and contents which was also a removable sticker. after these are removed it is very hard to convince a customer they got what they paid for. I am not saying you didnt. the installers may have removed them at their truck prior to install. go to the store and request to see your original order form. if they made a mistake all that has to be done is to change the sashes not the frames. which is a simple thing to do and not messy or labor intensive.

the milguard clasic uses an aluminum spacer and the lbl uses a super spacer. get me ten feet away and i can't tell you the difference between the milguard and the certainteed window. the lbl is slightly better with a better guarantee.

Silver Line: Worst window at the low end of the line. Sashes with poor fit, poor customer service, locks that don't line up, glass that gets frosty. Poor thermal performance. Can't say enough BAD things about silverLine. Not only does they window suck but the company itself is disreputable. Don't know how they get their ratings to qualify for meeting energy code standards. I have two clients that have them and you may as well JUNK them. The reps are idiots but wouldn't you be if you repped a piece of crap too? I like the Harvey Pro-Weld for about $20 more don't cheap out or you'll pay twice. and the Pella Arch. 2 series for a wood window replacement. Excellent service and great windows.

I too live in southern California and need to replace windows. It appears vital that one finds a competent and reputable installer. Does anyone have any installers in the OC area which they could recommend? We are looking into Milgard, Anlin and Polybau at this point. The installers we are currently looking at WinDor, South Coast and Shamrock? We are looking into Milgard, Anlin and Polybau at this point, but not married to any one vinyl manufacturer. Sad that Schuco isn't out West, because all of your emails have left me wanting this brand. It must be a real heavy duty window for harsh winters. Any help anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A harsh but basically accurate description of Silverline products. I have often questioned the usefulness of the test results on products; some of the Siverline products and other low end windows don’t look that bad on paper and they meet Energy Star so you may conclude they are good but the reality is much different. It seems just about any window can get a silver AAMA label you want to buy windows with a gold AAMA label.

When purchasing windows you need to look at thermal performance but get your hands on the windows check the sashes for play, fit & finish, look at a frame cut-away and the quality of the hardware.

Your comments were very helpful to me. I had a quote from Sears to replace 14 windows a couple fixed and the rest DH. They are Simonton windows for 15k. The price is 19k for the 'keep safe' window. What do you know about the 'keep safe' window and would you recommend it?

Simonton is good product but you can do better price wise by dealing with a Simonton direct dealer. Go www.simonton.com click on homeowner then dealer locator and enter your zip code.

Keep Safe Glass is two pieces of glass with a laminate sandwiched between them. You will get better insulating values (but not as good as triple pane w/ two low-e coatings and krypton) its primary advantages are preventing break in, cutting down outside noise and it blocks most of the uv. But an additional $4,000.00 is excessive along with the rest of the quote.

Sorryu Dave. You could not be more wrong. I have carried the Champion window with me for years and use it only to show potential customers what they don't want in a window. Single stength glass with glued on exterior glazing. The foam filling expands when hot and does in fact crack the frames.
their warranty is worthless as well. Oh, check the BBB almost every champion location has complaints. The worst window I've seen in year. Do youself a favour and stay away from them!

Hi. I was wondering if anyone had ever heard of Cardinal Windows before? I think they are pretty low end based on the price. However, they do meet energy star standards, if that even means anything. They are vinyl replacement dh windows with a U-factor of .35 that we are considering for our home in the Boston area. Any help is greatly appreciated.

We have a Cardinal Window Company in the midwest based in Missouri, which is one of many of the brands I carry, but I don't know if they are the same window you are seeing in Boston. I was under the impression they only sell in Missouri and Illinois, but maybe they have expanded their distribution network. If these are the windows you have seen, then this is what I know....
These Cardinal Windows are decent midgrade windows, though like any other brand there is a good, better, and best in their line.
They are similar in build and looks to windows like Atrium, Reynolds, Certainteed, or a host of other "clone" windows. They have several options with the glass packages, colors, and woodgrains. All in all, not a bad window compared to many, but still not a super premium window. Most contractors sell the 3 Cardinal Window lines for about $300-$450 installed.

The 4 upstairs are fine, one of the 2 sets of casement windows in the living room has a broken seal and is getting condensation between the glass. I want to replace these 2 and 7 other single hung sliders on the north side. I also need to replace a bay window, a sliding glass door and a french door. I have a quote from California Delux Windows of between $17,000 and $20,000 depending on some options. I have been trying to find consumer reports type of reviews but no luck. Any suggestions or any information on CDW.

Well Carol, Xact windows are pretty much the bottom of the barrel in windows. If your doing it to save a dime these will fit the bill. They are made by MI out East. They are the lower level windows under their Capitol window line. You must have gone through Iver Carlson for the windows. I wouldn't let them put a window in my doghouse! One thing though...if they are installing and suppling all seven openings for $1900.00 then your getting one heck of a deal. Jump on it today because I've installed door & window products here in MN for the past 30 years. That's a rock bottom price that won't be matched by many! Good Luck with those windows!!!!

I've found Alside to be a reasonable company with good warantee performance. If you are going to keep your home for a long time you owe it to yourself to check out the Sheffield by Alside. It is a stronger window, and though it has a lower dpl rating, it's air inflitration is better than the Excalibur.

I live about 70 miles SW of Chicago (40 miles west of Joliet) and I replaced all but one of my windows this past year. Because I believe in quality and value per dollar spent I elected to go with Schuco and I'm glad I did. It was a total of 19 windows replaced for less than 10K.

The dealer/installer I contracted with also handles Gorell and a few other higher-quality windows and does a superb installation job. He's a regular poster here and on the other Tim Johnson site as Window4U and I'd highly recommend that you at least get a quote from him.

He's got decades of experience and is a pleasure to deal with. His phone is: 217-424-8900 and his name is Dave.

Best of luck in your decision.

tripe panes and superman gas are not as good as people say. tests have been done that show double panes w/ argon and 3/4" or 7/8" IG is better than krypton. krypton is only good for more narrow IG units and when you use a window with a more standard thickness you loose e-value. simonton or certainteed are going to be the best in the replacement market.....

polybau is a better window than either milgard styleline or classic. these 2 windows are falling behind the replacement markets because they're old designs. both use single strength glass with intercept spacer and cheap single fin weatherstrip.look at the corners of the sashes; you can see clean through the frame, they are not sealed. i don't sell polybau beacause we carry Anlin and go many years back with them. I have looked at polybau in the past and feel its a better product then anything milgard makes in vinyl.

 SILVERLINE REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

Author: TerryD (---.cm.mhcable.com)

To all potential buyers of vinyl replacement windows!!!!! Avoid Silverline brand like the plague!!!! I've had the 8500 series (supposedly top of the line) in my home for two winters now. Prior to that, I had Home Depot's Reflection series installed (not knowing they were a sister company to Silverline). In both instances, the moisture build-up on all the windows froze solid! My complaint has not been the moisture problem, as I had that problem with my old uninsulated, double pane wood windows. My problem is the amount of cold air blowing in where the top and bottom sashes meet and cool air radiating from the sash exstrusions (not foam sealed). The customer service gentleman sent out on numerous occassions, has tried everything in his power to eliminate the problem, but has determined that it is beyond his control. Mangement at Silverline states that windows meet all standards but mine. Excuse me? I thought when you purchased replacement windows it was to get rid of the old drafty ones, not so your house could just look prettier while still incuring the same draft problem! Not an install problem either as different contractors were used each time. Home Depot installed their windows and a general contractor installed Silverline windows. Brand new windows that I'm using rope caulk on to prevent the draft betwen sashes! Talk about literally throwing good money out the window. Buyer beware!!!!! Feel free to e-mail me if you have any doubts!!!!!

Hi,

I first want to thank everyone for all the information they've posted on this subject. I would have made a very bad decision if I didn't find this site!!

I'm currently having a house built in western MA where, as an example, the wind chill will be -28 this saturday morning.

The window companies I've seen are: Andersen, Pella, Harvey, Marvin, and Jeld-Wen.

Because of cost, I've already made changes that Im not all that happy with, i.e. replacing a bay with two double hung and a slider with a single patio door.

Can anyone offer any help with finding quality affordable windows in MA?

Thank you!

Don't you other people reading this site think it's really sleazy of this guy to keep posting and advertising on his competitor's website trying to steal business away?
This site relies on it's "request a quote" feature for revenue to keep this valuable resource available to homeowners, and this guy is trying to siphon it away by trying to get you to go to his similar (but inferior) site.

HEY JOHN CHIPMAN, WHY DON'T YOU USE YOUR OWN MONEY TO ADVERTISE AND BUILD YOUR OWN SUCCESSFUL SITE INSTEAD OF TRYING TO STEAL FROM YOUR COMPETITORS!

I'm glad I found this site/thread in time.
We had our first vinyl window quote from Statewide Remodeling of Texas Friday night without first doing homework (as we normally do). Price kind of staggered us, but product seems good. I'm assuming a Quantum2? Sales guy was good/slick, but didn't leave us any window specs / literature.
Re-thinking if we need such 'quality' for our live-in lakehouse outside of Fort Worth when we need other fixups as well. Will cancel contract tomorrow.
Was quoted $7941 total for below:
1 double hung 30W x 35H
1 fixed pic window 70W x 70H (maybe 2 adjacent 35x70s?)
2 fixed pic 84W x 53H (about $1200 ea.)
1 fixed pic 34W x 76H
1 63W x 35H slider
1 6 foot sliding door (about $2200)

Price above didn't include 3 more 30x35 DH, 3 34x76 pics, and 1 sliding door that we would like to replace as well. Eliminated these from original quote due to cost.

I think the door, 1 DH, and 1 pic were top-o-line as far as UV (facing west) and others a step down. Tempered for some where applicable.

Have a HD guy coming tomorrow night for Simonton quote.
We've realized we don't need top of line due to older house (1968) and other re-mods needed. Right now anything would be better than our 37 year old single pane aluminum and fixed windows.

Any advice would be appreciated about Statewide or other brands.
From this thread, it looks like I need to find out if Schuco has a distributor around here. I realize you get what you pay for, but maybe we need to consider a medium grade.

Thanks again for any info.
Rick

Wow! Thanks for the quick reply. I'll contact Lone Star Monday. I think I need to keep looking at local companies in Fort Worth area as well. We'll see what Home Depot presents to us with the Simonton on Monday.
It's tough enough selecting a window. Now I guess I need to think about questions to ask about the installation team.
Any tips about checking qualifications of the people installing my windows? Thanks again!

We are looking to replace @ 6 Norco casement windows. They have lost their seals. Can't even see out of them in the summer. The co. we use recommends Marvin. Any opinions on Marvin? What should we be expecting to pay for a mid-line product? Also, is it more cost effective to replace all windows @ once, or to do it in stages? We live in the Chicagoland area. Thanks!!

use the search feature on this site and look for "window broker". you'll find some useful information on them. i believe the pacific west window is actually a polybau window made by prima products and re-labeled for the window broker. it is comparable to the simonton reflections/impressions.

I live in New Jersey and are looking to have 5 sliders and 2 patio doors replaced. We have looked at several brands. At the moment, Thermal Inustries - a division of Atrium, is what we are considering. They offer peak performance of one lite of soft coat Low-E, one lit of clear glass, argon enhanced air space, and PPG intercept spacer system. The R-value is 3.6. We are also getting our patio doors tinted gray because of heavy sunlight that comes in across our TV. Cost is around $6,500.

Does anyone know anything about these windows?

Chicagogirl,
Marvins will generally cost you more just for the window uninstalled than most companies charge for a window installed. I also handle Marvin and like them very much,... just be prepared to pay a premium for a premium product.
As far as mid-grade windows, on wood windows you can expect to pay up to a couple hundred less than Marvin on an installed price. With vinyl windows, the price can be less than half.
If you have questions on specific mid-grade products, I'd be more than happy to help further.

we paid $500-$800 per window installed depending on the size of the window. This is a High end window that surpassed all other windows that I looked at. The great thing I found in my area (SC) is that there was a local Manufacture. They handled their own insallation with their own employees, no sub-contractors. The Lifetime Warranty was also handled by them and not a third party. I felt that I got better service through a local manufacture that handled the whole process from making the product, installing the product, and guaranteed the product. Kinda like the buck stops with them. Here is their web site if you want to take a look at them. www.southernwindow.com hope this helps.

Re: BEST BRAND OF VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

Author: Window4U (IL) (---.client.insightBB.com)

Reynolds has several windows in it's line, ...the 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, and 6000. The higher the number, the better quality the window. The 6000 is the only one available with woodgrain interior, but if you are going with white or beige inside and out, then the 5000 would be the best choice, as the build and tolerances of the 5000 are better than in the 6000 in my opinion.

The Reynolds is a good quality mid-grade window with few problems. The pros of this window are the exceptional and lightning fast warranty service in the event of any warranty issues, the availability of 1" wide contoured grids, constant force balances, and nice sturdy extruded screen frames. The spacer is PPG intercept.

The cons of the window are that the stick-on fuzzy pads on the outside of the lower sash near the checkrail meant to aid in airtightness will probably fall off eventually, and the windows lack triple-glazing as an available option.

This window is a good choice for those on a normal budget, but be warned that it does not have the fit & finish or extra quality features of something like a Schuco. But then again, that's why it costs less than a Schuco.

The price is horribly high for the windows, by a mininum of 5 or 6 thousand dollars, maybe more.
Time limits to qualify for a special price are a high pressure closing technique used by old school "tin men". It's a dishonest way to get you to buy before you have had enough time to do your proper research and get other price quotes from the competition. He doesn't want you to give you the time to find out he's trying to severly overcharge you.
Dump this guy and find a different quality contractor. There are many out there that will treat you fairly and with respect. If you would like to let us know where you are located, some of us on this forum may even be able to help you find a quality contractor we personally know in your area.
There is also the "Request a Quote" feature on this site provided by the site's owners (for free) that will hook you up with a contractor in your area. I would definitely recommend people use this free service if they need more options.

I've seen some poor viplex installs using clear caulk that couldn't be painted. Windows were clad in cheap aluminum siding borders that appeared to be lifting. It was strange, the front window was immaculate, as you got to the rear, the window install quality went from excellent to shoddy. I told this to salesman and the next list of installs to check, the address was missing.
I talked to homeowner who didn't know they had to repaint their house to makeup for the shoddy window install. May bet his is a one time exception, but I'd look elsewhere...

I sell windows in their area around Mt. Prospect but have really never heard anything one way or the other about them. According to their website, they do not make their own window, but rather use mainly RepublicWindows and Thermal Industries windows. Both are good mid-grade products and are available with triple low-e with krypton, though neither are true premium high-end vinyl windows in build and features in my opinion. They may charge premium prices though, which may support their claims of being high-end in a sense.

This is a very nice thread. I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on Nordic Gaurd fusion welded vinyl windows?

I got a quote from a company (I live in Minneapolis, MN) called USVICO to install replacement windows: 8 36"wide 42"high double hung windows, 1 picture window 36"wide 48'high, and a 110" wide 48" high 30degree bay window (25/50/25 - double hung, picture, double hung). Light oak vinyl. $13,538. Same thing without the bay style for the big window is $10,605.

Seems kinda inflated for the number of windows being replaced.

Any thoughts?

THanks!!

DJ

I'm sure Guy can give us some more thoughts on this company or product as a local window professional in your area since he is in Minneapolis. (He owns Installation Masters, Inc.)
Let me give my observations first by doing a little research.

First, I looked at USVICO's website. It was pretty uninformative about any of the products they use or who makes them. I did glean a little tidbit from their testimonial page from one of their customers that the Nordic Guard windows are made by Amerimax Windows.

I tried looking them up at the NFRC website but it does not look like they are certified. STRIKE ONE.

I then looked at the Amerimax website,
http://www.amerimaxwindows.com/manu.html
and tried to get a sense of the manufacture of the window. The site describes the manufacture of the windows as having soft coat Low-E, but only a dead-air space. No mention of argon or krypton. Also, the one photo showing the adding of hardware shows what looks like outdated spiral balances. Between those two things, STRIKE TWO.

Knowing now that the window is not NFRC certified, and not seeing modern manufacturing components, the price I see you have been quoted seems to me to be ridiculously high. STRIKE THREE.

Now since the website says nothing about the Nordic Guard, maybe it has some features that are not listed on the manufacturers website, but how is anyone to know? There are no U-values, air infiltration ratings, or any kind of tool for a homeowner to try and make an educated decision.
This is one reason NFRC testing results are such an important tool in a homeowners search. While the NFRC ratings are by no means a total guide as to which window to buy, it is a place to check out salesmens claims of performance and the presence of certain preferred components.
The absence of NFRC testing or testing from a certified independant lab would totally disqualify a window if someone were asking my advice.

To Dave Johnson,
I've had a couple run ins with the USVICO a while back. I went against them in a bid for some windows a couple times. I try and steer clear of the salesman name calling and telling you my stuff is better than theirs. It's a shallow step to take. If I'm not mistaken the USVICO (United States Vinyl Coatings) I think. Handle windows made by a couple manufacturers. I only know of the Amerimax window the W4U was speaking of. They are NFRC certified under Amerimax Building Products. The type on the NFRC site is very tiny. I looked past it the first time like I'm sure W4U did. But they are there. I've installed the Amerimax window a couple times. I thought it was a very good product. I have nothing bad to say about them. USVICO does more than just doors and windows. They have an entire line of vinyl products. The biggest downfall is they have to order windows from out of the state. We use a local manufacturer for our windows. It really makes a big difference when you have a local supplier. I just did a quick number crunch on your windows. I could do the entire package 8-DH, 1-PW and the bay for $10,000 and I might be a bit high. Without seeing the job I have to go high. So you can find better pricing out there. Just shop around a little more. Hope this helps!!!!

I have 12 year-old casement windows and despite my diligent annual efforts to take care of the wood (paint, caulk, new seals around the frames) - several frames have rotted. I cannot afford to replace all of our windows at one time (kids in college, a wedding next fall), so am looking to do incremental replacement over a few years. I have about 6 now that I must replace.

Not being real knowledgeable about windows and knowing only enough to be dangerous about a good installation (which I know is critical for any brand/quality of window), I am soliciting advice from this site I discovered today.

I live in the Kansas City metro area. My wife and I stopped by a Champion store today and have them coming out to measure for a final quote later this week. They are offering about 50% off - I'll be getting 2 approx. 42x25 windows and a double casement where each of the two are approx. 53x29 installed for about $3k & change. The sale pricing ends next weekend. Can anyone recommend other quality and reliable alternatives (sellers, brands, installers) in my area to consider? We want vinyl casements - at least mid-grade quality with good warranty and install.

Thanks very kindly,
-Doug

Time sensitive "sales" in the window industry usually have the effect of getting people to buy quickly before doing their proper research or having the time to get other bids.
Take your time and don't let anybody rush you. And don't worry, there are plenty of competent companies with as good or better windows for less.

I am looking for replacement windows for my 192 house on the central coast of California. We are looking to get a good deal for 10 windows, but we don't want to put in low-quality windows. We have quotes from:
Jeld Wen
Millgard
Window Master (Home Depot)
International Window

We are looking at abou 6k for any of these (installed). Does anyone have any advice on these?

Milgard's vinyl windows is well made, even though it's appearance is plain jane. Jeld Wen's vinyl windows are pretty flimsy and not well constructed. I have never heard of the other two brands, therefore I would recommend you focus on getting the best price on the Milgard windows.

you're not giving yourself much to chose from. before you decide take a look at anlin, simonton or certainteed and see what the cost difference is. they are all higher performance better constructed windows then then ones you've listed.

We got a quote from Windows USA who make the Alaskan 2000 window. Anybody ever heard of them?

I have one more question. A guy just priced me 12 Simonton 5500 windows for about $300 total more than the price of 12 Reynolds windows. I know the Reynolds windows carry a lifetime warranty and the Simonton's do not. Which would be a better deal? Is there that much difference between the Simonton and the Reynolds? Thanks

Jared, I don't mean to be rude, but you are the one that needs to check your sources and your facts. Someone has filled your head with mush.
Schuco has the same exact Good Housekeeping seal and benefits as every other product with the seal including Champion.

And Schuco does not, nor ever did have Heat Mirror.

In case you don't know what the Good Housekeeping Seal and Limited Warranty is all about, the following excerpt from them should make it clear. Please don't make any more silly statements about one product having a better Goodhousekeeping Seal than another. The Good Housekeeping Limited Warranty is the same on all products. For goodness sakes kid, read Champions own site if you don't believe me.

"Since 1909, the Good Housekeeping Seal has been a highly recognized statement of the magazine's renowned Consumer's Policy. The Good Housekeeping Consumer's Policy, published in every issue of the magazine, states that if a product bearing the Seal proves to be defective within two years of purchase, Good Housekeeping will replace the product or refund the purchase price."

Author: JC (---.ne.client2.attbi.com)

Elaine,
I don't know what your sales presentation was like, but my Newpro experience was of the type that gives the replacement window business a bad name.

My husband and I made the decision to see the windows before having a rep come to the house. Living just west of Boston, going to Newpro's HQ in Woburn was an easy trip. The receptionist immediately called a rep over to point us to the window for us (Note to Schuco - when we went to CT no one talked to us or even offered to be available if we had questions). The window seemed decent enough that we'd consider it so the rep offered to come out that evening. It was as if he couldn't get us out of the showroom fast enough. When we said we were also considering Schuco he said he'd be prepared to discuss it that night. He claimed he'd been in the business for 16 yrs but he couldn't talk about the competition without boning up on it?

The sales presentation was poor - basically reading a script of slides in a binder. There were the requisite cut away samples of their window and Certainteed's and the light demo. Crunch time for pricing - 10 d/h windows started at $14,660 less $790 (the advertised $79/window savings). Naturally that didn't go over very well so the rep READ a letter from management while not making any eye contact that said due to the high cost of sales (i.e. multiple visits to the home) they could only make a special offer at the time of the initial meeting. This took the price down to $10,400. That still wasn't doing it so he gave us a marketing agreement form that said they could use our info for promotional purposes, but he had to make a call to get the authorization and level of the discount (doesn't this sound like a used car sales tactic?). If we'd sign that, the price would drop to $9,390.

Given we were still in the search process and had Schuco coming in the next day, I told him I couldn't sign the agreement in good faith and if that meant the pricing went away, so be it. It got rather heated at this point, I was close to throwing the guy out of the house. Finally, with bad grace, he agreed to give us 24 hrs so we could talk to Schuco. Not surprising, but in a tacky manner, the guy had absolutely nothing good to say about any of the competition.

In comes the local Schuco rep and as they don't have a stellar reputation, I expected the worst. He quickly figured out we'd been doing our homework by the questions we asked. (We didn't tell him we'd already been to CT). When we told him we would be looking at Newpro he said Great! It's a decent window with a few weaknesses in his view which he specifically identified, likely to be overpriced and he was certain we'd come back to them after we'd seen it. The Schuco pricing was in the ballpark for what I expected for this area with none of the BS games. I forget how long he said the price was good for but it was for a reasonable period of time. By then we knew we were going with Schuco so the time wasn't an issue.

The rep from Newpro followed up and we told him we'd gone with Schuco. He wasn't happy. Then the calls started from someone in-house who wanted us to talk to the regional manager - if the issue was price, they could do much better - blah, blah, blah. I got the managers name and number. They followed up again when I didn't call him and reiterated how much better they could do on the pricing. They were persistent, I'll give them points for that.

Our Schuco windows were installed on Valentine's Day. I'm one very happy camper.

Really like the blinds within the panes of Pella but after reading the posts, I'm not sure they're a good product! Apparently Pella has a new 2005 line with improved blinds between the panes.

A rep has told me to look at BestBilt windows as he says they have the blinds between the windows also. He's also quoted us WeatherSheild, but they don't have any blinds between the panes.

Any help would be appreciated.

If your bid has triple glazing with krypton gas, then your bid is within the acceptable pricing of east coast dealers.

If you have questions about your paticular dealer out there, you may want to email FenEx at Fenex@optonline.net . He knows quite a bit about all of them.

Simonton, Alside, Pella & Anderson are all excellent window manufacturers. (In my opinion, in that order. I say this becuase Simonton offers an excellent warranty. Typically, your distributor gets better support from Simonton thereby, better support to the consumer). Of course, they all have a "good, better & best" line. Whatever you choose support, warranty & quality should be a factor in your decision process. if you live in the southern part of the country, I recommend you purchase the LOW-E. If you live in a colder climate, I suggest the argon gas. Much of what you opt for depends on whether this is a window for your personal home & you will want long-term service from the window & company, or if it is an investment property & you want to save a few $$.

Re: BEST BRAND OF VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

Author: FenEx (---.dyn.optonline.net)

I'll venture a different view. Low-E and Gas fills (Argon/Krypton), are not interchangeable. While there are numerous types of Low-E coatings, with varying levels of efficiency, their primary purpose is to reflect radiant and ambient heat back to it's source in any climate or condition. The gas fills are to retard or slow the allowed heat transfer through the I.G. unit. North or South, having both is an advantage.

HI, There seems to be quite a following of a few name brand windows, but there are just a few replacement window companies local to me that are able to do the work in a reasonable time, and have good credentials.

One company sells Uniframe, a product of Great Lake Windows inc. This is billed as a premium window with reenforced vinyl and foam insulation in the frame. This costs about 2500 more for 10 windows installed as compared to a quote for a company called Seaway. The Seaway window seems standard in comparison to others I have seen. Both offer breakage replacement. The Seaway window is not reenforced. (window width btw is 38 inches by 68 tall double hung.)

I realize that installation is part of the key, and both companies have good reps. But what of the windows. Is reenforcement really necessary?

Last question concerns Vinyl itself. Is the thickness of the Vinyl used in construction a real factor, does it not pass cold the sameway etc...

Thanks in advance

 Lowes' Pella windows bad?

Author: bw (204.94.201.---)
Date:

Sorry to ask a question about wood windows on this thread, but I'm a little confused about some of the discussion of Pella windows. Lowes markets Pella wood windows with the numbers 250, 450, and 850 (these are Lowes' numbers, not Pella's). I've been able to ascertain that 250 and 450 refer to Pella Proline, with different options, and 850 refers to the Pella Architect (without the divided light option).

Here are my questions:

1. Is this Pella Proline the same Proline that was thrown out of Home Depot for poor quality, as mentioned on this thread?

2. Is there a substantial difference between 450 and 850--the former a Proline window, the latter an Architect? Upon visual inspection I could see almost no difference.

3. If the answer to the above two questions is yes, then what is Pella's quality wood window? Are they all bad? Or is there a difference between Lowes' versions and what you would get from a Pella dealer?

Thanks for any help.

bw

 Re: Lowes' Pella windows bad?

Author: Guy (---.chcgilgm.dynamic.covad.net)

BW, The Pella window has made some huge advances since they were dropped by HD. The Designer, Architect and Proline series are all almost exactly the same window. The sashes can interchange from one window to the other. The frames are identical from one to the other. The only difference is the way the sashes are made. Now I know the Eagle guys don't like the fact that Pella has a roll formed sash cover on their window. The reasons behind this is any damage to this area can be quickly and cheaply changed out with a couple screws. Plus this part of the window doesn't require any structural limits as the extruded frame does. It's really just a decorative part of the window anyways. Now because of this removable panel the sash has been beefed up to where it's almost solid wood.

Their Precision Fit replacecment window gives those customers the wood interior they've been looking for. It also gives them the ability to do the job like a replacement insert window to save on a total replacement.

This past Thursday I was able to sit down and analyze Pella's new Impervia composite window. Pella spent big money on producing their own exclusive interlocking matting. They call it Duracast, their own exclusive, five layer, engineered composite which is highly stable. This material is stable in high heat it won't expand, warp or sag. In subzero cold it won't shrink or become brittle. This is by far the strongest most durable material available in any window today. Duracast is nine times stronger than vinyl and twicw as strong as aluminum. Best of all you can paint it any color you want.

Personally I would put Pella windows in my house any day. I really feel they have come along way over the past couple years. Pella isn't the fourth largest manufacturer for nothing. 1.06 Billion in sales. That's three times more than Marvin and Simonton. They only stand behind Andersen, Jeld-Wen and Masonite. So they must be doing something right. Go see them for yourself.

Before the haters start bashing me. This is just my personal opinion. Although all the facts in here are true and honest. Feel free to look it up!!

I had 9 casement Pella Designer series windows installed in October. So far no problems. They have the blinds between the panes--nice. They insulate very well. I'm saving 4-6 kilowatt hours of electricity a day! Plus I live on a busy street and the noise level has been reduced considerably. I briefly considered vinyl windows but I was told wood windows are best for cutting down on outside noises. I pitted the Pella store against Lowe's and got a good price.

Unfortunately, you're still talking about wood frame windows, which can cost up to and above 1600.00 per window.Woos fram windows are still suscepticle to weather changes. They shrink in the winter, they swell in the summer. Wood also retains water. Even the best sealants will give out in time. That water will cause those wood frames to rot.
Loos windows from frames that have shrunk cause infiltration, allowing heat to escape and cold to enter through your frames.
Also, consumer reports studies show that the seal in dual pane, wood frame windopws fail at the rate of 1:14 per year!!!
Say goodbye to your argon.
Now you have an R value of about 2.
They also have determined that wood frame windows need ot be replaces, although people rarely do, at a rate of every 6-8 years.

Hope you haven't paid for them yet.

Shuco IS worth the money, because you never have to replace your windows again.
100% garrentee on 50% energy bill savings, parts, installation, etc.

Think long range. You're making an investment inb your house. IS the 50% savings, and that's a conservative # plus the price of the windows less than the cost of not putting them in and paying 100% of your fuel bill, considering inflation and fuel cost increases??
Shuco is the best for a reason, they ARE the best AND they stand behind every aspect of the experience of replacing your windows.
100%. No act of God clauses, no "if the house settles" clauses, and time limits.
100% for the life of the windows as long as they're installed in your house.

I'm all for Schuco and all, with being a dealer here in Illinois, but a blanket 50% fuel savings pledge is a real stretch my friend.
Take this example. The first house has no insulation in the attic or walls and the wind blows through like crazy. But, this house has air-tight windows and real good storm windows. This house is not going to save 50% on the fuel bills with new windows no matter how good those windows are.
But, take a house that has been insulated well in the walls and ceiling, has house wrap and good doors, but has leaky single pane aluminum windows. Now this house could really save dramatically on the fuel bills.
Your enthusiasm is to be commended, but there is no need to do anything but tell the exact facts.
The window is the best quality vinyl window on the market,... and sells itself all by itself.

Those are not bogus numbers.
Shuco garrentees, in writing that your energy bills WILL decrease by at LEAST 50% when you install the insul-sash system.
OK. Do this. Figure your average energy bill per month, times 12, for the year. Now add 7.9%, the national average of fuel increases, yearly, (and we're not adding the 4.1% inflation rate the US averages yearly) and go 10 years, compunding that rate.
A 225 monthly bill opn average over 15 years is over 112,000 in energy costs. Those are conservative numbers, because fuel increases usually go up by 16 - 25%.
Anyhow, divide that cost in half, and add the cost of the windows.
I just wrote one today. Over a 15 year savings, an entire house that listed for 34,000 for the windows saved almost 27,000.00 in costs. Over a 15 year period.
Sounds like a good investment to me.

I'll say it one more time.. email me and you can even call me... your numbers are bogus. You have a good product, but I will not sacrifice ethics for the sales of any product. FenEx@optonline.com. If you choose to keep it here.... I'll oblige... and you will not care for the result. Keep it real... that's all consumers want or need.

Give me a break GJH. I'm a Schuco dealer and have been doing this window stuff for 30 years now.
In the past, I have collected customer's fuel bills for the year before and years after and adjusted for degree days and fuel increases. I've done huge amounts of research on this, and blanket statements of huge fuel savings just don't hold water. Certainly some homes will save considerable amounts of fuel, but to say it's a fact for all homes is either naive, dishonest, or both. Just so you know, we promote honest sales techniques on this site. Please don't spout nonsense on here or you will be called on it.
The people on here can hear plenty of nonsense from the high pressure salesmen who come to their homes from companies who charge $900-$1200 a window for vinyl windows. This forum is to help people educate themselves and to know what the real truth is.

Well, I'll bring my case in from the car when I get home from my last call tomorrow, scan a copy of the 50% reducion in fuel costs we give, and post a link to it, so you can see it.
Now POSSIBLY, for some reason, you don't offer that, which is cool, but we do. AND we've never paid on it, ever.
Considering we've done $400,000 in insul-sash sales here, JUST this year, in a climate that is below 40 degrees on average from Nov - Apr, I'd say it's pretty bona-fide'.
Not to get into an argument, just telling you what we do.

Would someone that has the knowledge please comare the Gorell 5300 and the Bryn Mawr2 windows. I have found a local lumberyard that sells the Bryn Mawr (sp). So far this is the only "National" brand that I have been able to find locally that seems to receive good reviews here. I have waited 2 weeks for the rep from a company that sells the Gorell.I am afraid of paying $500.00 for a $100.00 window from some of the remodeling companies in this area. Any comments or helpful advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for this board and your time.

i could put solid block in the windows on some houses and they are not going to save near 50 % in heating cooling bills. i am sure most people understand this but all the schuco dealers on this site{ and we all know there are plenty of them} sure are letting this guy off easy. if it was some other company window salesman you guys would be all over them. by the way i offer a 85% energy savings. i install new windows and take your furnace with me on the way out!
might get a little chilly but its all about the savings.suck it up you dont need no heat.

His claims are rediculous. For the record, Schuco doesn't offer that 50% guaranty... but if a DEALER want's to... that's fine. This dealer is selling bogus promotion. My question is simple. If only 40-60% of your energy bills (gas, oil and electric) are related to heating and cooling, and about 50% of that portion is attributed to windows, how can you possibly save 50% on those bills? It's a false promotion. If anyone has ever read it, you will see that it is limited to a one year period with many exclusions based on similar temps (before and after), only the heating and cooling portion and capped off at a $500 total liability. Not so hot if you are paying 30-40% more than you should in the first place. This is NOT a Schuco offer.. it's a dealer offer... and misleading. I recommend anyone that doubts this to call Schuco direct at 1-877-472-4826 and ask them about their 50% energy bill reduction guaranty. Don't be suprised if they say... "huh"?

You are right on the money. The first difference in price between most custom fit window companies is covered by supply and demand as it relates to where you live. The 2nd difference is energy efficiency (low-e/gas fills). The 3rd is the service the company extends i.e. Free in Home Estimates (nothing is free), Installer then visits customer to confirm measurements and styles before the manufacturing process even begins. All this costs money, good sales people are not cheap, great installers are not cheap. If you want cheap don't change your windows and put plastic inside during the winter. When it comes to window replacement it is my experience that customers know the price of everything and the value of nothing. I have no sympathy for them when they get ripped off for buying on price only...It reall is stupid.

I know this is a replacement window forum, but I was just wondering if the same premium brands apply to new construction as well? Or are there other top brands for that?
