 Home Depot, Lowe's, or Sears?

Author: BillA (134.174.91.---)

I am currently looking at replacing about 20 original windows from my 55 year old house. I have heard many horror stories about contractors who start the job and never finish or jobs that are poorly done. In that respect, we decided that going with a big company may be a better option. We are currently considering Home Depot, Lowe's and Sears to do the job. Does anyone have any experience with these companies, or could anyone suggest a reputable, but inexpensive company in the Boston area?
Thanks!

Bill

Despite the countless posts about the 3 large retailers you listed, you are aimed that direction? I am thinking you didn't read enough posts. Aside from that, please let us know which of the aforementioned offers the best products for an "inexpensive" price. Please post again with the results of your proposals.

Well I did see some of the posts against Sears, and I am glad that I read them. Sears did quote the highest price of the three.
HD quoted on average (I have various size windows) $550 per window plus tax installed for their Anderson windows and I got a $475 plus tax price from Lowe's for their Pella windows. They are definately not high end windows, but are certainly better than the ones I currently have. I was told that several local places may quote me as low as $350/window, but I have not looked into them.
I am not looking for the cheapest place, but the best price/value/satisfaction installer. As I've said, I am open to suggestions as to which company or installer to go with as long as the price/value/satisfaction ratio is high. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I'm in the market for new windows, and I just got a quote from American Vision Windows for 7350 for 11 windows. These are for Anlin windows.

Bill, I don't want to sound too much like a Sears commercial, but, here goes. I can't speak for the quality of the other two suppliers you mentioned, but I can say with all the confidence in the world, I have installed thousands of Sears best windows. With minimal dissatisfied customers. In fact, I can honestly say, you'd be hardpressed to find one. The windows are not inexpensive, but you'll get the Sears reputation of standing behind what they sell. I can't tell you how important this is. If you think the big box stores are a permanent thing, try calling a Builders Square or a Furrows, hard to find one of those left. I feel sorry for all the people who got windows from those stores. Their service issues might be handled by someone else, I'm not sure. But Sears is going to be there, if you need them.

I think I just got a quote from the same company for 8 windows and a sliding door for almost the same price. Did you have a sliding glass door at all?

Well Bill, I've worked first hand with all three of your choices. HD and Sears pretty much sell the same window in most parts of the Nation. Sears on average is getting $800 - $1000 a hole for a window they should only be charging $300 for. HD is a little under that pricing. I find Lowe offers a better program than either one of the others. At least here in MN they do. They have good sales people and trustworthy installers. You may not find that with any of these companies in your area. It's really hit and miss. It's a roll of the dice. You can also go up to the top of the screen on the left side and try getting a quote off this site. This may get you something you weren't expecting. Give it a shot!! Good Luck!!!

The Window To Success, Is Your Installer!!

sears, is a rip off, plain and simple. It may be different over there but i installed simonton(sears) windows built out of the Vacaville, CA plant for years and couldn't believe the problems they were having. about half, yes half, of our orders were shipped either incomplete or damaged. every delivery would have at least two busted retro fins. plus their service was two months out at best. you can get the same low quality window from a small shop for half the price in some cases. just do some research and see what companies in your area are growing and will be around for a while. if you find a good window company - not a department store - you will get better service, period. not saying all small companies are great-most aren't, just saying you should do research in finding a company because all three stores you are considering are way overpriced, don't employ any of there own installers or check out installers previous work before hiring, and just don't have the capability of offering the level of service you should expect when updating your home. also, andersons are great windows - it would be an insult to compare them to simonton(sears)
