Re: Adjusting the sliding doors
If the gap is between the wall and the door, you need to call HD where you bought it and have them come out and fix it for free. That's supposedly covered under their warranty. If they won't fix it then you can try the hillbilly fix by spraying foam in the gap and hope for the best, but that door pr...

Re: Looking for suggestions - Long Island, NY
Well, knowing the brand of the window would be important information. Don't shop windows for a low price or you will likely be severely disappointed in a few years. Get the estimate and as much detail as you can. Don't fall for any phoney "good for today only" offers and then come ba...

Re: Looking for suggestions - Long Island, NY
I would suggest getting a few estimates from a local dealer. Some of the brands we like on this site include Sunrise, Simonton, Softlite, Okna and Gorell. Take a look at at least 2 more windows before deciding.

Re: Dow Great Stuff foam or backer rod/caulk?
This is the reason we advise homeowners that using foam is not critical. You are much better off having your windows installed by an experienced installer who uses fiberglass than to let someone not experienced with using foam, experiment on your home. The advantages of using foam are way overblown ...

Re: "Capital" windows?
Lie #1. They don't make their own windows. They sell a window made in Maryland by a company called Vytex. Lie #2. Run from any company offering to use your house as model home. This is one of the oldest home improvement sales tactic on the books. In fact, in the State of Maryland where they have the...

Re: "Capital" windows?
I'd start by finding out who makes their windows.
If you are searching for information on a local company, it's usually better to search places like the BBB, Angies List and references from previous customers.

Re: Wasco vs AllAmerican/softlite?
It was about Wasco and All American until you and Lex Luthur ran it off the rails by insinuating that having a factory install the product was preferable to an independent dealer. It's simply an easily provable false statement. Nobody is saying Wasco doesn't do a good job or that a consumer won't be...

Re: Down to 2 estimates
There's almost always some reduction in energy usage. How much is difficult to say. Depends a lot on how bad your old windows are and other factors such as how tightly sealed your house is. A good quality installation is critical also. Most of us like to see the window openings sealed with foam rath...

Re: Down to 2 estimates
#1 for two main reasons. One is the Softlite is a better window and two, the Provia Door is quite a few steps above the Masonite Door. Additionally, the Provia comes with a really nice factory paint job and the Masonite is just primed so you would have to paint it yourself. Also the Spectrum 291 is ...

Re: Grandura Windows?
Yeah, I thought a comparison to having no windows at all didn't make a lot of sense. Using that as a basis would cause a saving of a couple of thousand %.

Re: Grandura Windows?
Actually, it would be the exact opposite. If their were no windows at all and the walls were say R-11, adding an R-3.3 window in would INCREASE heating and cooling costs.lex luther wrote:It must be based off having no windows at all going to having windows installed. Good savings indeed.

Re: Grandura Windows?
If I'm correct and this window is made by Simonton, then I am very surprised they would allow such a claim. Simonton redesigned their brochures after the scuff up with Great Lakes in Washington. For my area they actually have $278. average per year savings printed on the brochure and $419. per year ...

Re: Grandura Windows?
Iirc the Grandura is a Simonton window similar to the Impressions 9800. If so, it's a very nice window. However, for the same money, the Sunrise is a better buy.
