Re: Cleaning vinyl windows after tornado.

Here is an update. I was able to get all of the debris cleaned out and the glass crystal clear. I did so using a shop-vac with a tiny brush attachment designed for auto-detailing. I was able to clean the first of the six that was messed up on the 1st floor - it took two of us over an hour to clean i...

Cleaning vinyl windows after tornado.

My yard/house was directly impacted by a tornado here in central Texas. We had many large trees snapped by toothpicks, lost some roof shingles, but no glass breakage. The problem is some of the vinyl windows have dirt, grass and leaves in between the edge of the IGU and vinyl frame. I know there is ...

Re: Austin, Tx Replacement Windows

We bought our windows from Ringer Windows in Taylor. They are a local manufacturer and had a very thin frame. I'd suggest going to their showroom to see if you like them. I ended up installing them myself but your job sounds difficult with the higher ceilings so you'd probably want them to do it. Th...

Re: Water in wells of new replacement windows

We had a very, very heavy downpour today with 40 mph wind blowing the rain directly onto a big vinyl 72x60 slider. Our yard got quite flooded. I noticed the inside track got about 1/2 full of water and when the rain subsided it drained quickly. I am going to go out out and check if the weep hole cov...

Re: Install methods.

Spoke to the city building inspector. He said the at least one window in the upstairs bedroom must meet egress. So that means either casements (seems harder to install) or a single-hung with a pocket sill. I can't seem to find any brand of single hung w/ a true sloped sill that will meet egress. The...

Re: Install methods.

So I got the quote for NT. The total price was almost exactly the same as another quote but NT's single hungs were 20% cheaper and have true slopped sills. Their slider was about 10% cheaper but is a double slider which I am not a fan of. Their casements were 10% more expensive. I guess I will call ...

Re: Insulated Glass Units - Dallas

I had two windows with broken seals or hard to operate sashes a year ago. I called local glass places and cost was $200 per unit or $400 per window. I ended up buying two new vinyl windows new with LoE 366/LoE 340 glass for less than than replacing the glass doing my own labor. Cost was around $250/...

Re: Install methods.

So it is time to order more windows. I pretty much had narrowed things down to Milgard, Ringer (a local manufacturer) or maybe NT. The Milgard Trinsic has a profile of is just under 2 5/8 inches, but that bulkier than those I have already installed from Ringer at 2 1/4 inches. With the same glass Lo...

Re: Install methods.

December was the only month so far with similar weather as the prior year so it made for a good comparison. Not only did our gas usage go down but it is also more comfortable in the rooms with the new windows. However, with the siding job we noticed a humming noise (like traffic in the distance) aft...

Re: Install methods.

About time to order more windows. I need to replace 6 single hungs, 3 upstairs and 3 down. I was thinking of using casements for the upstairs for better egress, and single-hung on the lower as their is porch bench in front of two of them. How much harder are casements to install? They are going into...

Re: Low-e windows and green hue - help!

My windows have Cardinal glass in them, they have an etching in the lower right corner readable from the inside that will tell you the type of glass used. Mine say 366. So ask your neighbor if you could look at his. If you'd like a bluer tint you may want to consider Cardinal LoE-340. It is quite a ...

Re: Install methods.

Thanks Randy and WoW. I spoke with the installer for the local manufacturer, they said with Hardie it is not an issue. The siding installer said if anything the Hardie is more prone to shrinkage than swelling. It looks great - so paint goes on tomorrow weather permitting. The siding installer (who a...

Re: Install methods.

Another update - the Hardie siding was installed and it looks great, but...... I noticed the siding installers left no gap or less than a 1/8 inch gap between the Hardie trim and the vinyl window frames. They have not yet caulked or painted. Both window manufacturers recommend a 1/8-1/4 inch gap wit...

Re: Full Frame Window Replacement from Interior Only?

Just curious, do all of the condos have the same age/type of windows? Does anyone else have leaks? Have you talked to your neighbors? If every one needs windows or if many have leaks it might be time for the whole complex to be done, perhaps with special assessments to cover the cost. It may be chea...
