Install methods.

All, Here in central Texas, I have decided to install windows from my local window manufacturer that has 5* ratings. I am going to be doing my own install with hired muscle as needed prior to having siding replaced w/ Hardie. We also have brick. For the ones going into siding, I measured the rough o...

Re: Simonton vs. Sunrise

If air infiltration is the most important, why do so many window companies make it impossible to find? Does anyone know what a good AL number is for horizontal sliders? I've heard look for single-hungs below .05 but what about sliders?

Re: Met my installers, more questions (and a roadblock)

So my contractor called back this week. He got me another quote for my local manufacturer higher than what the manufacturer charges with their own installers. He can't find a product at a similar to DYC with a true-sloped sill, double-strength glass, non-metalic spacer, etc at a cost similar to his ...

PJS, did you meet with Statewide? If so, how did it go?

Re: Met my installers, more questions (and a roadblock)

Long story short, my contractor stopped using DYC because of order entry errors they wouldn't rectify. Thanks for confirming my fears about Milgard. The lack if info on their specs really bug me. Their lock on the Tuscany looked attractive. The thing that bugs me most about NT is they only make doub...

Re: Met my installers, more questions (and a roadblock)

So my contractor called and we spoke about potential options. He can do Milgard, but it seems their vinyl windows have pocket sills depending on where the window is made and the AL numbers aren't impressive. Milgard is not clear about what spacer they use - it sound an a lot like the Cardinal XL edg...

Re: Austin area - many questions about replacement windows (long)

I misnamed the Milgard line, it is Style-line not slimline although it is a slimmer frame - https://www.milgard.com/windows/style-line-series I don't think PM's are possible here. I began the process by looking for siding contractors who install James Hardie siding. Through the James Hardie referral...

Re: Met my installers, more questions (and a roadblock)

I didn't get the installers phone number, I just have that of the company and there estimator/sales rep and one of their first names. Are they doing something wrong, or everything right?

Re: Austin area - many questions about replacement windows (long)

Pjs, Ringer told me that the use fiberglass too. They said I could use whatever I like but the warranty would be void if the foam pushes on the window and causes issues. The only concern I have with Ringer is not seeing them on the NRFC website or getting numbers on air leakage, plus them not doing ...

Re: Met my installers, more questions (and a roadblock)

Well the saga continues. My contractor is no longer going to install DYC products. So he is going to look for an alternative. I asked it be like or better and at the same cost. I asked him to look into Soft-lite, Sunrise, NT Window, Ringer (local company), Milgard and the Simonton 9800. Any other pr...

Met my installers, more questions (and a roadblock)

So I met my installers when they came to measure at my home just outside Austin, TX. Here are a couple of notes and then questions. They are a two man team who work for my siding company, but also do jobs for one of the big companies. For my siding company they do the measuring, but for the big comp...

Re: Thoughts on Beldon, or any other Austin installers here?

I checked his website and the referral link here, he is not doing Austin. Austin has a shortage of quality window installers who install premium products. I am sure he could do well here.

Re: Whole house or partial house replacement.

So I decided to remove the large MDF window seat sill, about 7 feet by 2.5 feet and found the OSB under it was in great condition. I was not surprised to see that under the window with a 1/2 inch gap with absolutely no insulation. The only thing keeping out the cold was a bit of caulk, and the nail ...

Re: Whole house or partial house replacement. (Decision made)

So after some drama, my contract has been signed and accepted. We are going with the DYC 5100/5200. Wife is getting her custom grid (a Victorian/craftsman look) with an arch on top 1/3rd of the upper sash met by two verticals going up to the top of the window. The design has to be made at the Cardin...
