Micrometers
I actually once had a customer check the dow foam we put on his house with a micrometer. We used the 3/4" because it had a sort of tongue and groove, a little better than the square edged stuff. Unfortunately it only measured 5/8", I explained to him it had probably been compressed a littl...

I think the only time thats really a big issue is when that style siding goes right up to the window, metal outs with no wood trim around them. Looks like a good job! I've never actually seen a shuco window in person, very nice. I always enjoy Fenex's posts, he seems very knowledgable(like alot of p...

HD install
Actually Home depot pays their subs very well in my area, and it lets them be a little choosy about their help. It also makes me as an installer feel like I can spend the time I need to be happy with the completed job. Thats not to say I don't hurry, all installers need to move right along to keep e...

It would be impossible to work in the window business on a daily basis without preference, or bias, based on each person's experience. Seems to me that is exactly why consumers come here..to get the benefit of the professionals experience (preferences) without wasting time on more estimates or just ...

Low expansion foams
Looking for some info on these. I have ran across 3 or 4 brands but its hard to tell if theres any difference in quality/price or day to day usage. Same thing with the guns, looks like they all use the same style but its hard to tell whats best from the website ads. Can any of you guys who have used...

However you install them you can get a lil more glass area by using sliders over double hungs, some companies even have sliders that swing in to clean. Probably save some money with one slider in place of 2 dh's too. I don't know if there is one proper way to do the install, its more complicated tha...

Ouch!! That seems a little high to me. You ought to be able to get a good job for between 12k-16k. I install alside products, which are a good window and a good company to do business with, and at 21k I could afford to come from out of state and stay at a ritzy hotel while doing the job, then pay fo...

Most installers shouldn't have trouble enlarging the windows, its more the fact that you want to use windows you already have. Its nothing personal but alot of the time someone wants to buy/supply materials its a sign they will be cheap or hard to work with. It also makes for alot of gray area in tr...

You would be much much further ahead to just get several estimates and have new windows installed professionally. By the time you pay to replace the insulated glass and change opening sizes you will have spent a good amount of the money new windows made for your house would cost, only you probably w...

I would recommend most any other brand over xact. The windows have some nice features but are nowhere near as nice as alot of other brands. The parent company is mi home products, a huge company that primarily makes vinyl and aluminum low priced new construction products. They have terrible quality ...
