There are very specific difference between what is deemed a hurricane resistant window, an impact window, and a Dade County approved impact window. Hurricane resistant windows have Design Pressure requirements but typically have no requirements for impact/laminated glass. This is the bottom end of t...

Finally a reply from someone who can send me in a direction of a window supplier. The gentleman from Washington kept telling me that the ALENCO was inferior, but I am inquiring on the Home Craftsman (NOT ALENCO) which has the best performance ratings over any other window in MY area. All he did for...

Re: foam insulation inside the vinyl window

One window salesman has a window with the foam insulation inside the vinyl window frame, and another does not. The one that does not said it works better to have the "dead air space" rather than insulation. How do I know which is better? Foam insulation is better however the difference is...

It is my understanding that the U-value is a measurement of the resistance to heat flow. This is how we measure our walls and not windows ... since glass does not resist heat flow. The frame of the window can be used as a resistance to heat flow, but this only makes up less than 5% of the opening. ...

Re: Home Craftsman has .18 SHGC according to the NFRC

I live in the North Ft. Worth Texas area and have been researching windows for my 8 year old home. I want to be certain I am getting the best, but have found myself at a crossroads. My salesperson told me to check the National Fenestration Rating Council website (www.nfrc.org) to establish the true...

Depending on the unit and manufacturer, I have heard of DH numbers in that range. As Fenex said, really depends on the unit and whether or not that is duplicatable.

In more detail responses contained within quote in bold Hi Everyone, new to the site - first time post... I just received a quote from a company in the Chicagoland area Illinois Energy, the first quote their "retail" quote was 55,000 for all doors/windows, but they'd give a 25% discount th...

I didn't look over all the numbers but the fact that they gave you a 25% discount off the top should tell you a little bit about how inflated their numbers are.

Re: Simonton Prism Ultra Gold v. Platinum

I'm a DirectBuy customer, where you order home items via catalog at the wholesale price. They had a Platinum window installed in the show room and also had (I think) the Bronze version (the service rep wasn't sure), but I cannot find an Ultra Gold to look at, feel, open, "kick the tires" ...

Two observations: 1) When I was carrying Schuco, they did not offer any architectural shapes in triple pane. So, unless I'm missing something, your paladium window is most likely a double pane unit. 2) Neither Argon nor Krypton have any effect on the SHGC of a window. Pretty sure you are dead right...

I think it also bares mentioning that the gas fill has only about a 20-30% effect on insulating value so the difference would be difficult to notice.

That is not a bad price for the Elements window in your market at all and I think it is significantly better product than the Harvey unit.

Harvey unit is not bad at all but the Elements/Soft-Lite product is just that good.

Good tips.

I prefer the cellulose method because if feel it gets the best coverage and most complete fill. Inserting EPS leaves voids and although there is no air infiltration, insulation value is minimal.
