Re: Newbie From Baltimore: Replacement Windows

Great lakes is offering free low E this month at our supply house. The ad mentioned dropping the 4000 model, renaming the 3000 and 5000. Is Seabrook the 5000 model? I like their interior glazing bead, no weep holes, and they offer triple pane with intercept spacer and a transferrable lifetime warran...

Re: Viwinco Windows

The Cambridge (best) series from Viwinco has upgraded their hardware. I just left our local supply house and thought it was a nice upgrade. The lockset on only the bottom sash now incorporates the tilt latches. This window is very robust. It includes 3/4" coil balance, double strength glass. Th...

Re: Ellison 1300 series/American Craftsman

IMO for 0.30u/shgc The Prism Platinum is your best choice. The platinum has the stepped sill design, 3/4" coil balance, weld relief on interior of sash. Prism is available from Norandex, the identical 5500 is available at other outlets; big orange and supply houses. I prefer to upgrade to the o...

Re: Alside

I have installed thousands of Alside mechanical windows. Alside was the first to offer as standard; double locks, double strength glass, intercept spacer, but that was the nineties. I also dislike pocket sill and filler sills. Now Alside aka associated materials has the new enviro view products. Has...

Re: gorell and Okna BAY

Insulated in the factory is great because it speeds up the install. The only downside is if you need to install from inside as the stepped design will impede sliding the unit out. I am suprised it's not standard yet.

To qualify for 30% ARRA tax credit on windows cost. Less than 0.30 u value and shgc on overall product not center of glass. Regarding installation most aluminum removals have nail-fin and should be replaced with nail-fin or new construction technique. Proper flashing see installationmasters website ...

Re: gorell and Okna BAY

Oak box is an optional upgrade over birch plywood verneer. Consider also upgrading to insulated seat board. 1-1/4" plywood is not very energy efficient. This upgrade adds rigid foam board and an additional layer of plywood on the exterior sill.

Re: A1side Excalibor Vinyl Windows

IMO the Simonton Prism Platinum/5500/9800 have the stepped sill design which is much stronger. The intercept metal spacer is standard. I prefer the one inch glass package with super spacer. The one inch package glazing bead (exterior) is thinner and does not catch the dirt or water as easily. The do...

Re: Brown windows in Boston

Has anyone else in your townhouse development replaced their windows? Simonton offers a Driftwood color throughtout option. It is a lite brown earthtone color. woodgrain is also an option. Paradigm is a manufacturer in Maine that offers a plethora of colors. that which is difficult is also beautiful
