Re: question for installers - sill plate membrane/sill pan
Thanks Delaware Mike: I'm going DuPont products all the way - including their Weatherization Sealant Caulk, just to be sure everything is compatible. I don't think the low expansion spray foam will be possible without removing the nail fin (which I don't want to do) or removing the intact drywall re...

question for installers - sill plate membrane/sill pan
Hello: I have 2x4 wall construction and interior "drywall returns", ie no interior wood trim other than the wood window sill and apron. I'm having siding and trim removed and new housewrap integrated with my new Simonton windows with integral nail fin flange. The Tyvek book I saw shows usi...

Nail flange fin fastener preferences?
Hi all: Is there a preferred fastener for nail fin flanged windows (Simonton)? It would seem ring shank nails would give the flattest profile, but some nice stainless pan head screws might hold better and last longer. Will the trim board (James Hardie) lay flatter and not rock if flat nails are used...

Re: AMSCO windows - Serenity Series - anyone have input on these
The only thing I didn't like about the Amsco was the glazing bead. It is a thin, flappy sort of thing and not as rigid or stout as the Simonton glazing bead. It also didn't have a durometer seal like the Simonton. Also, as I recall, the sliders couldn't meet ETC requirements unless you went with the...

Re: AMSCO windows - Serenity Series - anyone have input on these
I took a very close look at Amsco here in Colorado and they were my second choice next to Simonton. I'm surprised there isn't more discussion on this board about Amsco - perhaps it is because they are based in Salt Lake City and most folks here seem to be in the East. Amsco uses Cardinal IG in their...

Pella - decent choice for patio slider?
Hi all: I know this board is focused on vinyl window questions and that Pella windows are not held in high regard here. That being said, does anyone have any experience with the Pella wood interior/aluminum exterior clad sliding patio doors? I'm looking at the Marvin aluminum clad and Marvin wood-ul...

window sill pan question in new construction install
Hi: I having new windows (with integral nail fin flange) and siding installed. I was just going to have the sill wrapped with something like DuPont membrane flashing but see there are rigid sill pans on the market. The windows have already been ordered based on RO measurements (minus 1/2" in he...

nail fin flange - proper fasteners?
So I was meeting with my general contractor tonight. He mentioned using staples for the nail fin flange because screws will stand proud of the flange. I had never heard of using staples for a nail fin flange! Yikes! He has already provided measurements and the windows are on order. He will use nails...

Re: Replacing Windows in Denver CO
Hi:
It does appear to make a difference. Ask that the U and SHGC values be displayed on your quotes. They were clearly displayed on my Simonton and Amsco quotes.
Let me know how things go. I can pretty much direct you to most of the available windows we have here.

Re: Home Depot 6500 Series
I just wanted to add that I think the name Simonton will now become more recognized in the Denver area. I saw a huge display at HD for the 6500 in the store last night. It was never offered here in HD before. Now, us mile-high dwellers have another option for Simonton other than ABC or Norandex.

Re: Replacing Windows in Denver CO
Hi: I have probably looked at all our options in Denver. Many of the better windows discussed on this board can be found in Denver - you just have to know where to look. AAMA member vinyl manufacturers have formulated their vinyl for harsh conditions. I don't think any quality window is going to war...

I don't know about GlassGuard. Is this a rebranded PPG intercept spacer?
As for the SuperSpacer, the EdgeTech site is chock full of good information. Certainly a lot of window manufacturers offer it.

Skydawggy: I have read that tempered glass is about 4 times stronger than regular glass. In that regard, it is more impact resisant, towards a baseball or tree branch, right?Skydawggy wrote:Tempered glass is fairly easy to break. Give it a whack with a hammer and it breaks.
