Re: Air infiltration measurement

I totally agree with Homesealed. We as installers, salesman, service technicians, and anything else can only believe and support what we've learned over the years. I can straight up say I don't believe half the stuff I promoted ten years ago. I've learned a lot more from the other pros on these boar...

Re: How Should Window Capping Be Installed

Homesealed explained it perfectly. Our exterior capping application has seperated us from all the others! We bend our capping with brickmould bends to match existing wood brickmould. 90% of the installers here just box bend to save time and money. This way just doesn't work for me. We go that extra ...

Re: Weight bearing ability of mullions in Vinyl windows group

Woozy these type of Windows pop up all the time. I've probably done about two dozen of them. In each case the vertical 2x4 running up through the mull cavity had NO structural relevance. They were mainly installed for the attachment of mull casing trim between the wood windows. Since back in the day...

Re: triple pane vs double pane

your existing Pella windows will have issues for ever. Those early 2000 years were not a good product. Pella tried using a wood preservative on their windows which failed big time. I guess Pella didn't learn from Marvin's crash from years ago. I highly recommend replacing them. As for triple pane ve...

Re: Aluminum Wrap INSTEAD of exterior trim?

I always hem both sides. Some accessory grooves are a bit narrower than others. If I have a tight squeeze I take my hand seamers and squeeze the hem down.

Re: Aluminum Wrap INSTEAD of exterior trim?

The big box stores are so hit and miss it stinks. The big problem is they don't pay their installers enough money to do a good job. The stores don't give a crap how it looks or turns out. They just push their installers to get the job done and move on to the next. Most of the big box installers are ...

Re: Replacement window not flush with siding

In my opinion the DH window that was replaced was recessed back in the opening further than the original. If you look at the casement you can see the frame is almost out past the J. The original window probably had a wider jamb thickness or some type of Jamb Box inside to flush the Sheetrock. The ne...

Re: Aluminum Wrap INSTEAD of exterior trim?

So many installers have different methods of capping a window. The two above me nailed it. We can't answer this one without some pictures!

Re: exterior doors and storm doors

Look into it a bit more. I was brought down to the plant by Pella to find some manufacturing errors and help the engineers with the development of the easy installation application. Pella paid for my trip and told me they acquired Larson & Cole Sewall. If Pella doesn't run the show there they su...

Re: exterior doors and storm doors

The upper end doors are built with a bit more pride and patience. I've installed almost everything out there. I have had issues with all of them. I look over every door I install and add extra screws in the frame to lock it down tight. I do like the Therma-Tru frames and their anti wicking piece. Th...

Re: Casement/Awning window questions

The Egress code is in the Fire Code. The egress code was established for firefighters because of the fatalities caused by small window openings. It's also code that the building inspector can not enforce the fire code! Unless he is licensed by the municipality to do both. That's why it's better to t...

Re: Casement/Awning window questions

First off, are these awning windows located at ground level or above grade? Ground level windows only require 5.0 sqft to be legal where the others need to be 5.7 sqft. Have you always had an egress window in this spot? If not are you absolutely sure your required to make this upgrade. In most cases...

Re: New windows and a thicker wall

Installing a new window over insulation board is very tricky to say the least. I've done it numerous times with complications on each job. The biggest issue is getting your fasteners to hit something rigid enough to secure the window. If your going to use a three inch insulation board you might as w...

Re: install review

I have no choice in my retiring. Both my shoulders are like a 95 year old mans. Bone on bone. I won't really retire, I'm only 54. But I'll get into the educational side or build a couple houses. I could never sit at the house. Everytime I do a wall comes down or I tear something apart. Anthony, if I...

Re: install review

Unfortunately our standards of an install has changed. New technology gives us a better window. Codes have changed the way we install products, and that American Pride on Quality Craftsmanship in most cases, is non existent. Now add the Energy Efficiency to all that! Plus the true facts that we in t...
