Re: Wisconsin Window Advice

Argon and Krypton are both inert gasses as are Helium, Neon, Xenon, and Radon. Helium is lighter than air while the rest of the inert gasses are heavier than air. Dry air has a density of 1.29 gm at sea level. Helium at .18 gm and Neon at .9 gm are both less dense than air. Argon at 1.78, Krypton at...

Re: Removal of Old Windows

How an installer puts a window in will be different from one to another. We cut the blind stop with the "Fein Multimaster" tool. It makes a clean cut and lets us nail the stop back in place after installation. The circular saw works well but you can't have the novice installer do it, they'...

Re: Contractors

Tom, The bottom line to all this is kind of logical in one way and illogical in another. The manufacturers of the upper end windows want to be as controlling of their product as much as they can. In order to save their integrity and reputation, they require a perfect installation every time. If ther...

Re: Question for Installers: Low Expanding Foam

In my previous post I stated DOW had a water based product, I've since corrected that statement to DAP. I was multi tasking at the time of the post and typed out the wrong three letters. Sorry about any confusion I may have started. Rick, the amount of foam installers use is something each installer...

Re: Question for Installers: Low Expanding Foam

I know I've been out of the loop for awhile, I'm bewildered at this post. Using low expansion foam is a no brainer. Most manufacturers require this in their installation guide. Using any type of stuff in insulation is useless. The fiberglass insulation is made to work in its expanded 3 1/2" siz...

Re: Need help with glass replacment

Jim, The sticker you found sounds like the manufacturers production tag. These are put on their "Stock" sized windows during manufacturing. They designate a stock product which they mass produce and store in their warehouse. The building contractor gets the windows at a cheaper cost when o...

Re: Need advice on window brands and egress issue

There should be a lot of manufacturers with 60" windows that meet egress codes. The smallest window I can get from my local manufacturer that meets egress code is 39 1/2" x 59 1/2". I'm sure this is a very common size across the board.

Re: Window wonder?

Hercules, In most cases it's just a way for the salesman to get in your door. In reality it's a choice for us down to earth people to see what you have in your home. It's very difficult for us to sell you a product without looking at your existing windows. I personally want to see what types of wind...

Re: Ever heard of this?

In most cases I always find the husband to always say "Whatever she wants is fine by me". I guess the long term married couples have it down to a science. I've never had an issue with anything happening here.

Re: Avoiding "Gap" Between 2 Windows

Wrldruler, In some cases the center post is just a couple 2x6's stacked together under a continuous header. If you can find out if the header goes all the way across (by removing inside trim and chopping out some sheetrock) you can see the header. If the header is continuous you can then cut out the...

Haven't posted since May this year. I can't believe it's been so long. I guess being busy is better than naught. Hi to all my old friends here hope all is well with everyone. The Pella wood slider is by far one of the nicest sliding patio doors on the market today (IMO). If properly installed, it wi...

JD10013, Depending on the age of your existing windows, repairing them may not be worth the money you'll get out of new windows. Windows have made such a significant advancement over the last decade. Anything over ten years old doesn't hold a candle to the worst window on the market today. You would...

dwknjh6, Your sitting in the same boat as many consumers out there today. To answer your question without re-inventing the wheel, it's all about the installation! There are a lot of windows to choose from out there that all state they're the best. Some of them are much better than the others when it...
