Window World Reviews ..are they any good?

Author: John (---.mw.client2.attbi.com)
Date:

I'm thinking about getting my aluminum windows replace with vinyl from Window world and need reviews. They advertise any size replace for $189, does anyone have experience with Window world? I'm sure the $189 price is for their bottom of the line vinyl and I don't think we will be in this house for more than 5-7 years and do not want to invest in more expensive series. Any information would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks

I don't know anything specifically re:Window World, but I can tell you this: Check them out! The window replacement world is filled with sharks. Insist upon references and check them out at BBB.com (better business bureau)and your local licensing board. Also, don't be misled into thinking that all windows are created equal. Do yourhomework! Windows cosist of four components - Frame, Glass Pack, Hardware and Screen. Each brand has a different spin on each of these components. Find out what is important to you and go after it. Remember, only the rich can afford to buy cheap windows, because theyb can afford to replace them! You can't! So buy a window that you know will last. Cheap windows will fail in the 5-7 years you are planning to stay there. You would be better off getting windows that will last beyond this period and that carry a transferrable warranty.

I had a qoute from window world here in st. louis. the price you mentioned was for their medium grade window and if I wanted grids, low e, argon, exposed wood wrapped, etc. that was extra...the price qouted was just for a window installed where the old window was...no more no less.

We also had a quote from Window World in St. Louis and all you said is true. They have a lifetime warranty on parts and labor which is good. We would use the mid grade window for our smaller windows and the top grade for our larger windows. The window looks fine as far as thickness, chambers, weather stripping etc. I checked the company out with BB and it was OK--3 complaints will all being resolved. I also checked BB nationwide and all looked good there too. The only thing is they've only been in St. Louis since last April. They contract out their installers, but have had the same guys since the beginning. Our sales guy said he used to install. We are really unsure about using them at this point. I know nothing about other window companies in St.Louis, so don't know who to call next.

christie..

I had lots of folks come give me qoutes and I narrowed them all down to a company called dale webster exteriors. He came out to the home, took measurements, never pressured me and has been in business for years....no complaints with the bbb..none and the best part...no money down. we paid when the job was finished. The windows he installs are made by a missouri company called quaker and they've been making windows for 60 or so years. His price has no hidden agenda...you get the windows, the wraps, the low e the argon, etc. a little more than window world, but I liked his style..we've had them installed now for about a month.

Give him a call and at least check em out.

We went with Window World and I can't recommend them enough. The saleman was great, the installers knowledgeable and the windows are as good as some expensive ones we put in a previous remodel. The installers used to work for a local remodeling company and they said that company used the same windows and charged twice as much. We could not have replaced our windows if we couldn't get the price we did from Window World.

Here are a few things I have learned about them. They claim they are just as good as the better known names but when I check out their parts, they do not come close. I have caught them in a few lies. They claim they make their own windows but they are made from somebody else and are private labeled. They say they use a foam filled frame but the only foam is on the outside of the window. They advertise a low grade window and try to upsale you. You are not doing yourself or the future owners any good with buying cheap windows with no energy effieciency. Always ask to see the parts of the window to give you a good idea of the quality. Be aware of somebody who only shows you a window and not how it is made.

I'm currently going through window world in youngstown ohio. They are great from what i can tell......the 189 is the mid price window installed and for 55 dollars more per window you get the low e gas lifetime transferable warranty (don't pay for labor or shipping) and they also told us the company that makes the windows is AMI? they are the company that started making aluminum siding

Is foam, air or metal better for internal window chamber constuction?

Some say air...
Some say metal provices stability and prevents warping.
Some say foam provides insulation

Any facts or opinions?

I had numerous quotes, including one from Window World, for replacing my old wood windows. We ultimately went with Castle Rock Remodeling, because they were able to offer to us a name brand windows for a little bit less than Window World. I also liked that they are a local company.

About three months ago I purchased 17 of the 35 replacement windows I needed for the renovation of my home from Window World of York, PA. I regret that decision more every day.

Below is a copy of the letter I was forced to send to the corporate office in hopes of getting some results.

--------------------------------------------
Hello,

Hopefully I will have a little more success getting answers by email than I have had via phone.

Let me start off by saying that when I originally met and spoke with a representative of your company, I was very impressed by both the quality of your product and the company in general. Your representative was very personable and seemed to have a genuine interest in my remodeling needs. I mentioned to him that I had just purchased the home and that the majority of the windows cannot be opened, therefore one of my greatest concerns was the amount of time it would take to complete the installation. I had never lived in a house through the summer where the windows cannot be opened, but I could only imagine how uncomfortable that situation would be. I was then told that my new windows would be installed within 4-6 weeks. That was March 29, 2004.

As of that time, my regard for your company has steadily decreased. After about five weeks of no contact, I called and left a message asking for an update on the whereabouts of my windows, as I was becoming concerned. Astonishingly enough, after leaving my home, work, and even my parents phone numbers, I was not graced with the common courtesy of a return call. After several days, I called once again and finally spoke with someone beside the answering machine. I was told that they did not have my windows yet, and that they would probably have them in about two weeks! Two weeks? This was the middle of week seven... They should have already been installed by now! At this point I asked to speak to a manager, and was told that he was unavailable. However, he could return my call on Monday. I said that was fine. Surprisingly, I heard nothing...

About a week later, Angell Ford called and spoke with my mother. Ms. Ford proposed installing the windows on Memorial Day, but unfortunately this did not suit my schedule, as I was having company. I was to call and set up a date that would suit. After trying for a couple of days to reach a live person, since leaving a message had not seemed to be effective, I got sick of calling and did leave another message. And, what do you know? No Response!

What I have concluded from this ordeal is that your company is not focused on retaining customers or obtaining word-of-mouth referrals. I made it perfectly clear that I intended to purchase the remaining 18 windows, patio door, and entry doors from your company later this year. However, at this point that seems very unlikely. This fiasco has consumed hours of my personal time, and caused a great deal of frustration. This delay is holding up other projects that should have been finished by now. Not to mention having to live in a house without the capability of opening windows.

--------------------------------------------

I am finally scheduled for installation on July 15, 2004 (5 weeks late). I can only hope their product isn't as lousy as their customer service.

Proceed with caution.

The name of the company that makes these windows is Alside. Alside has a private label that several companies use. The window is just OK, nothing special.

OK,

Metal reinforcement in the horizontal sashes is a must. If not, you will have sagging in the sashes in a few years and the windows won't lock anymore. Also, foam is better than just air. It adds a better R-value to the window itself. It's more important to make sure you don't have a metal spacer.

My post is not meant to criticise Window World, only to explain how the whole thing works with them in my area. I suspect it may be the same elsewhere since they are franchises, but I do not know for sure.

Window World here uses the bait of "Low Price" to get into your home, and then once inside, they charge you extra for everything it takes to get to what I would consider a normal installation. No different than a car dealership luring you in with the couple of extremely cheap cars advertised in the Sunday paper, and then selling you a car you really want for a lot more..

The $189. price for Window World where I live has:
a low end Alside window installed in a wood opening,
no metal window tearouts included
no screen
no exterior capped in aluminum
no old storm windows taken off for free
no Low-E glass
no argon gas
no filling of the weight boxes
no taking the old windows away
no grids
no woodgrain color
All these are added in at premium prices.

Their average real sales price here is actually 50-75 dollars a window more than my premium windows are.

Now to be fair, there is nothing "wrong" with their business tactics. They don't do anything deceptive once in the home. They do spell everything out for you while they are asking you questions, selling you, and filling out the contract.
And the installers here are pretty decent at their jobs, even though they only make about half of what my 25 year veteran installers make.
I have to give them one thing, their business plan really works to get in the home and get the sales. They do some pretty high volume here.

I had Window World put windows in my house in NEFL. I bought from WW because one of the "Local Companies" just trashed them. I had never heard of them before that time. When this "local company" did that, I knew they had to be doing something right and they are locally owned. I liked the way they had a printed cost sheet, the "LC" did not. I got 18 of the mid level and the top of the line grade windows with low/e argon for $1750 less than the "LC" quote with a 25% discount. They went out of the way to work with my schdule to install the windows.

As to the installers, I am a CBC in FL and was very inpressed with their work. I was more concerned that a hourly guywould not care about the quality of the work he did and the sub's did and do care about the quality of work they do.

Call them, they offer a good quality window for a lot less than most companies. Go see the showroom. Check them out with BBB. Do your homework, but buy from WW.

It sounds to me like you have alot of sour grapes about the business you are losing to WW.

I strongly suspect you are a WW salesman by the structure and hostility of your post, not a customer, so why do don't you debate honestly with me.

Where in my post did I say anything to give any impression that I have sour grapes? I very rarely go up against WW, and when I do, I usually get the job.

I also compimented WW in my post on their great job at selling large amounts of windows and having competent installers.

Secondly, did I lie about anything I said? No.

Do you feel explaining how the $189 concept works to everyone is not a good thing?
Would you rather me shut up so the consumers on this forum are in the dark as to how the company sells its products? I guess it would be easier for you to sell your windows if I did shut up, right?

I can honestly say that I AM not a WW salesman. I was so impressed with the simple way they do business I have been looking in to purchasing a franchase. As to you "lying", according to the WW people I have spoken to about your post, all the windows come with a screen, a mid range Alside window ( the excaliber), with lowe avaible as a upgrade. As you don't say where you are from, it could be possible that you don't go up against WW that often, So tell me where you are so I can open up where you are.

As to explaining how the $189 works, it is like "KISS" Keep It Simple Supid, They sale a mid range window for a set price. $189. Simple ain't it. Yes if want more than a base window you will pay a little more, but if want a base window that is all you pay.

July 16, 2004. Went with Window World and windows have arrived and installation has started. Price is good for 11 windows and door. About 6K including installation. Can't complain about the price. 5 windows semi-installed so far today. The first five are not finished as the outside trim above one has been ripped off. Caulking around windows in kitchen is already cracking and split in addition to not looking very smooth. Remortaring still needs done and I don't think the installer bought any sand to mix in so that it matches. Some masonry has been applied but its brittle, cracked and flakes off like white chalk. The windows themselves look fine but install doesn't look good yet. 6 windows left plus a sliding glass door. Will continue to post progress.

Windows and sliding door are completely installed. Took 3 days to complete. Haven't posted yet because I was still doing some touch up (recaulk a few areas and masonry work). The windows look good from the outside and all function properly thus far. The damaged trim I mentioned previously was replaced. I had to paint because Window World doesn't. That's standard policy of most installers. Have noticed a reduction in heat coming in the front of my house from the old windows. I can touch the glass now and it isn't hot any longer. I did get the argon gas by the way. One problem installer ran into was getting the sliding glass door in. They had to build a frame for it because my opening was bigger than the door. That went fine except for one thing I haven't figured out what to do about. There is now a 1/2" gap between the frame they built and the foundation. They tried to use liquid nail to secure the bottom of the frame to foundation but it wouldn't take. The house is secure and the door fits but there is access for bugs/whatever to crawl in the gap. I did go over the caulking and re-did some areas that had cracked or had small gaps. Also re-did some mortar where they had used "great stuff" (foam sealant) and hadn't mortared over it. Put some extra cement around the windows where it was recessed. Overall, I would say I am happy with the windows, installation, and price that I paid. I would refer anyone who is cost concious and doesn't mind doing some touch up work to choose Window World.

 WindowWorld

Windowworld has three national buying contract's that I know of. Each of these vendor's provide a low medium and high grade of vinyl window to window world, the $189.00 price is of course the low end. Their premise is to provide the shopper with the lowest possible price on any type of window. I'm familiar with most of their marketing and as a whole they get the job done. I'm looking at some possible franchises myself. What I have found to be their weak point is getting qualified contractor's to get their work done. In area's where the local prevaling wages are higher then the national average they have a lot of trouble getting quality sub's.
What they do have is buying power and in general can provide the homeowner with the lowest possible price on a decent window.
For example an Alside Sheffield installed and wrapped for $349.00 is an outstanding bargain. You'd pay $450-$600.00 at other shop's. On the other side of the coin $189.00 for their std window is no bargain unless you don't care about the quality. They are well organized as most franchises are, and of course the quality and service varies from franchise to franchise. The important thing is to check out the local dealer their reputation and quality of installed product's.

Windowmann, I have been reading all of youre postings and you seem to know what you are talking about. I really need your advice. I am having 34 Certainteed Somertone II windows installed. My installer said I do not have to removed the old aluminum frames to have these windows installed. What is you opinion, should the frames, if they are in good condition, be removed or not. My home is located in Southern California and it is 9 years old with stucco. Any advice you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you

If they do not remove the old frames you could have problems. I am an installer and any stucco I have done 99% of the time the old metal frame has to be removed with a crow bar and the window pushed out to the stucco and the exterior capped with aluminium coil stock. certain teed is a very low end window keep shopping and if you want to know what you will get have the contractor show you one of his stucco replacement jobs if he cant walk awawy he obviously doesnt have the expierence to work on your home. There are alot of hacks out there that just arent qualified and if a stucco home is not done right you will be sorry.

We chose Window World at the recommendation of my brother-in-law. He had the top of the line window installed in a brick sided home in the Tulsa OK area. He was very pleased and had done a lot of homework before making his choice. He had proof of the energy savings he was able to get over the year that they had been installed. We also got the best windows they offered and were satisfied with the price and the installation of the standard windows. Our house required 2 large custom trapezoid shaped windows and these haven't been installed yet. The reason for the delay was that the window openings weren't measured correctly and the windows came in undersized. WindowWorld is replacing them with no reluctance. Installer sub and the guy who did the original measurements no longer work for WW franchisor. I will post the results of this because I believe follow-up is the key to customer satisfaction.

Adding foam fill to the mainframe of a replacement window is a waste of money.
80 percent of that window is glass. The only exception would be in extremely cold climates. Put your money into upgrading the glass. Also steel or aluminum reinforcment is key.

Champion only offers one model of window. Its a decent window, but it has flaws. Single strength glass and no metal reinforcement are a negative to me. I would look closer at their warranty too.

I have looked at, in Portland, OR, Loewen Renovation pak. I have a house from 1924. Is this sort of thing a better way to go, than a full window replacement? He quoted me $520 installed for a 3' X 5'. Aluminum white clad on ext, 2 grids on top sash, wood on inside. Also with Heat plus. The screen was an extra $40. Seemed like a lot for not even a full window, but then again, I am not familiar with this brand of window. Any advice would be great.

Thanks,
Spencer
