As promised, I'm back with an update. We ordered the Atrium 8700 and installed them with the help of a very experienced contractor. The cost for each window was about $215, and the contractor was free, as he's a friend. I created a flickr set of our window process, and I'll likely update it as we up...

Thanks for the feedback! We went ahead and ordered 2 of the Atrium 8700s, and will hopefully be installing in the next month or so. I'll be sure to report back once we've had them for a while. FWIW, the 8700 is aluminum reinforced, and has multiple chambers, which the 8300 did not. It seemed to fit ...

Measuring Windows
Of our windows, only 5 of 13 open at this point. The upstairs has one size, the downstairs has a slightly larger size and the kitchen window is an over-the-sink one. Is it necessary to measure the 6 distances (3 x width, 3xh) on each window or would measuring one window of each size be sufficient? T...

Atrium Windows
Our local wholesaler sells these, and the base model (8300) sells for the same price as the much-reviled Silverline 9500. (This is with all of the optional features I'm looking for -- lowE, argon, grilles, full screen)I plan on calling on Monday to ask about the 8500 and the 8700, but thought I'd as...

Thank you -- that is really helpful. I should add that as far as the DIY option, the brands available to us, other than Silverline, have no reviews or information available here, or in other places. I can't find a place that sells Certainteed or Simonton locally, we don't even have a Lowe's, and the...

Harvey Slimline vs Silverline/AC 9500: apples and oranges?
I've read all over this board and elsewhere that the Home Depot/ American Craftsman/ Silverline windows suck, suck, and suck, but in all of my research, I can't find much data as to why. (And yes, I've searched, so if there's some specific post that details why they are so awful, I'd love to see it,...

single hung vs DH, low-e vs low-e + Argon
We've scheduled some companies to come measure and give us a quote for new windows, and we're trying to find the midpoint between "the best money can buy" and "the best OUR money can buy." Existing windows are 1954, single pane, with storms, so pretty much anything will be an imp...

Thanks! I'm all for ditching the storms, but my husband (who would seal up every window with fiberglas insulation if he thought it would save money/energy! and if he didn't have a wife to stop him...) wondered if we'd get better energy savings with them. Good to know (for me) it could even damage ou...

Replacing windows, keep the storms?
We're currently getting quotes for windows to replace our original (1954) windows, but is there any reason to keep the storm windows?
