Re: Adding molding to aluminum trim.
Just another DIYer's way of dealing with PVC trim: The old way: Last year I used white adhesive caulk and small screws through the back of some PVC moulding to build up a profile around a Slider VRW. I then used small white nails to attach the built-up PVC to the aluminum and wood behind it, then ca...

Re: Vinyl Blind Stops?
Update: I cut the stool in place. Plunge cut with my circular saw for as much as the saw shoe would let me, and then finished off the corners with my multifunction tool. It came out quite nice. The very small gap will easily be covered with caulk. As far as my original request for 1/2" x 3/4&qu...

Re: Replacing 2 Single Hung Side-By-Side Windows
I know I'm jumping in late, but the last time I replaced 2 side by side double hung windows, I build a deck outside the windows and replaced them with a sliding glass door. :D When we moved into my current house, there was a pair of double hungs looking out over the back yard. Due to the slope of th...

Re: Vinyl Blind Stops?
Are you suggesting a multifunction tool (I have the single speed Harbor Freight version) for the entire cut? Would you forgo the circular saw plunge cut? I know that the saw shoe will limit the length of my circular saw cut, but if I rig up a straight edge guide, then at least that portiion of the c...

Re: why simonton window glass size so small?
Just an FYI.. As I DIY'er I can order Simonton windows through a local Norandex-Reynolds shop. Granted, I was referred to them by a retired N-R salesman, so maybe that helped. I was also able to call Simonton Tech Support where the tech emailed me a profile of a window frame as we were talking so I ...

Re: Vinyl Blind Stops?
The verticals will not be removed. They are made of 2 by material and form the sides of the pockets into which the windows sit. I'm home now, so I'll make it easy for us. Existing picture window on left, VRW DH on right, dog's hind quarters in foreground. There's a VRW DH on the other side of the pi...

Re: Vinyl Blind Stops?
...So previously, your stool board extend further into the opening as the Picture window sash was pushed to the blind stops? ... so now you just have to rip the stool to one consistent size across the opening? You got it! ...That would be pretty unconventional as the picture window would normally b...

Re: Vinyl Blind Stops?
What i do question is your comment "the front face is going to be inside the room by a couple of inches" . Am I misunderstanding that, or is the inside edge of the window going to protrude past the wall surface? ... What is the jamb depth of the opening? Of the new window? What I ...

...It is not available because there is really just no reason for it... As it turns out it is available. The pdf that can be downloaded via this link shows the 1/2" x 3/4" that I'm looking for as well as just about every other profile of stop one could want. http://www.royalbuildingproduc...

Re: Vinyl Blind Stops?
Makes sense now. Thanks. I have to remove the interior "stops" (actually the casing) since the VRW is much deeper than the existing single pane. Once it hits the exterior stops, the front face is going to be inside the room by a couple of inches, so I'm going to have to either rip the exis...

Re: Vinyl Blind Stops?
I did this once years ago by ripping down some Never Rot cellular PVC from Lowes. Worked out pretty nice but the head of my 15-gauge cordless nailer didn't like the angle of the screen track of the particular manufacturer of the newly installed vinyl window, thus I got stuck going old school with m...

Re: Vinyl Blind Stops?
I didn't say the stops were rotted. I said that they were in bad shape. The current window has (had) an aluminum storm whose frame had been screwed into the exterior face of the stop with a ton or two of caulk added for extra measure. The wood on the outside of the storm had been wrapped in aluminum...

Vinyl Blind Stops?
Greetings! Do they make vinyl blind stops? The last window to be replaced is a 48" x 54" picture window. The blind stops on this window are in pretty bad shape, so I want to pull them out and replace them. If the outside of the pocket where the stops are matches what I can see on the insid...

Re: Replacing casement windows with a transom window on top
...snip ...replace the 2-lite casement window beneath the transom...snip... So much to consider!! You are aware of how wide the center mullion is on a 2-lite casement don't you? If not, you might want to look at one before you make your decision. As far as I know, it's about 6" wide which coul...

Re: Anyone "in the know" on entry doors too ??
How do they match up pricewise?buddy110 wrote:TT doors don't match up to either Provia or HMI, IMO
I know you should expect to pay more for a better product, but (for example) are Provia or HMI twice as good at twice the cost or twice as good at only 50% higher cost?
